Interesting ...
The Padres have been content to let Lauer throw in back-field games this spring, while some of their top prospects were given a chance to start games in his place.
Lauer was just fine with that. It allowed him the opportunity to hone his new-and-improved slider. Plus, he liked the real-time adjustments he was able to make with the immediate aid of the Padres' coaching staff.

Of course I'd rather trade a lesser prospect & eat more $... but it's not my $. Doubt ownership wants payroll up around 130 MM in a year they are an extreme dark horse to compete even with Leake... but on the other hand, feel like the imbalance between position players & SP experience level/salary is SO extreme it's literally unsafe to the young arms as well as undermining any chance possible of competing to have no vet leading by example...
...hence the idea of Seattle "buying" a better prospect to eat some (more) of the salary?
and to get way too far ahead of myself, a "bought down" Leake is a logical rotation hole plugger as part of a trade for a better MLB SP either at deadline or more likely offseason
Thanks, missed that. Given the Padres have "prospects" and Seattle needs "prospects" plus will have a lot of money coming off the books after this season and next season .... would make sense that they eat some of Leake's salary for getting more (or better) prospects.

Anyone here think this?

Quote from LynchMob on March 16, 2019, 10:54 pmI was hoping that today would be the day that Quantrill would earn the #5 spot in the rotation ... didn't happen ... a text from a friend at the game said ...
- Quantrill seemingly had runners on all over the place, but somehow only gave up 3 runs in 3.2. (But Naylor didn't help)

Quote from Ben Davey on March 17, 2019, 7:54 amIt has been Quantril's problem all year. He is able to get ahead of guys 0-2, 1-2 but has problem putting them away. Most of the runners he allows are all from singles, and you dont often see anything "crushed" but still needs that true bat missing out pitch
BTW Espinoza is pitching today

Quote from fenn68 on March 17, 2019, 8:16 amOK, the sun was bright and the wind was blowing in AZ yesterday but watched the Padres game with the OF alignment of Pirela - Myers - Cordero and they looked bad defensively .... all three.
Although it seems that the Padres are downplaying the need for OF defense in favor of getting more offense in the line-up ... not going to get enough offense to offset this level of poor defense.
I am OK with give some ST reps in CF for Myers now that Jankowski is out of the picture and Margot is the only real CF on the roster ... sort of the emergency option during the season .... but he should be just plopped down in LF and left alone (he actually was good in LF early last season). Somewhat frustrated with the Padres spin machine on their development of Myers. They keep citing his great athletic skills to justify randomly moving him for position to position (reducing his ability to master any and enhance his value). Just because a player is athletic does not mean he is versatile. Their use of Myers hurts him and in my mind the team ... plus at 28 and after 4 years the organization should know better. Seems as though the FO wants something and will not let go and keeps pounding a square peg into a round hole.
Cordero has great potential ... but still just potential. Did hear T. Gwynn Jr. comment that Cordero is NOT a natural CF and at this point has a lot to learn about routes. Got the impression that even if he improves his routes, that lack of natural instincts will limit his quality in CF.
Pirela is just as we remember him .... a poor INF playing poor OF.
Did not think I would miss Jankowski so much as the alternative CF option ... hopefully he will be back late in 2019. No real options in the near term minors.
Maybe Preller as he makes calls on trades, we get a surprise and he adds a legit LHH CF option to allow Cordero to develop where he seems to fit ... corner OF.
As of now, if I was a fly ball pitcher, I would be worried.

I don't know if I would say THAT, but I do think Yates is a regression risk. Stammen does also seem more versatile; can come in mid-inning with guys on, go more than 1 inning if neccy. Even before he was Closer, Yates seems more like a pure 1 inning guy.
He's in nearly the exact same situation Brad Hand was (bounce around & Waiver claim vet who found success with Pads and had nominal by MLB standards career earnings, so GREAT candidate to extend), but never heard a peep about a contract extension even though I'm sure he would have taken something lesser than Hand's deal.
He did the tour in Japan in offseason with other MLB players, and was BAD in tiny sample. Not sure if that, or his age influenced Pads decision to year-by-year him??

Quote from Ben Davey on March 18, 2019, 7:38 amHudson Potts is a big dude. Spoke to him briefly yesterday, he doesnt talk much but says the right things. Was excited about Machado signing, even if it meant moving positions.
As far as Myers in CF is concerned, I dont think it will be an every day thing, but more of a LHP specialty lineup. Margot has still done very little to prove he deserves a starting spot, so Myers in CF allows the Padres to play both Franmil and Renfroe. Best case scenario would be to have that alignment, then put in Janko or Margo in the 7th as a PH for the pitcher and defensive replacement for Franmil.

Quote from Ben Davey on March 18, 2019, 7:45 amNot that this is a surprise, but Andy Green refused to name who the OD starter would be, despite Dennis Lin asking it in some very creative ways.
Both Gabriel Arias and Luis Almanzar have completely retooled swings and have looked great in Spring Training.
Blake Hunt has played 1B each of the last two days
