This is what makes projecting prospects a fun exercise ... "big hitch in swing" implies a strong negative YET MLBPipeline rates him the 5th best prospect based on their scouting criteria and a number of mock drafts have him being taken BEFORE the Padres pick at #6.
We should get a better sense in about 5 years.

6. Padres: Riley Greene, OF, Hagerty HS (Oviedo, Fla.)
Greene is the best pure high school bat in the country and it’s hard to envision him staying on the board much further than this.

Quote from fenn68 on June 2, 2019, 2:15 amAny new insights on the Padres thinking for their #1 pick.
Saw a note (Casavelle I think) suggesting the Padres will take whomever of the the top 6 prospects fall to them at #6 as the "best player available". For those of us who would like to see them bolster the hitting coming in the system ... the good news the top 6 are all position players.
Rutschman (C) and Witt (SS) will be gone per consensus. So, Vaughn (1B) .... Abrams (SS/CF) .... Bleday (corner OF) ... Greene (corner OF).
As a LHH power hitting OF ... Bleday may be the most impactful the soonest on the ML roster as a college bat which would be nice. On the flip side if it is Vaughn, also a college bat and arguable the best pure hitter is limited to 1B which could create a real logjam for the Padres at some point since 1B/DH types don't make great trade chips in this era especially as a prospect. Could argue given that potential logjam taking the 7th best player who might help the Padres' future is a more valuable strategy that taking Vaughn and immediately losing value to the organization.

Quote from Cptjack on June 2, 2019, 8:13 amThere are some interesting reads circulating on why you should avoid college bats. Fixing a swing as soon as you get them since a coach needs the player more than he wants to improve him (Buddy Reed). Data on prime production age being lower necessitating taking a HSer. While also avoiding the 19+ crowd.

Sort of agree ... a bit depends on where the college player's hitting skills sit coming out. "Fixing" a college bat after drafting him is always difficult but (and these are usually early 1st round talents) they don't really need fixing ... as with Senzel in CINN. On the flip side, HS hitters can be worked more to improve but past the few elite prospects their risk is just their HS exposure to quality pitching and basing the pick a significant projection.
At #6 the best bat HS or college should be clearer for the scouts to assess .... it is later in the draft that thinks can go south.
Someone like Reed fell to the second round because everyone was concerned about his bat but I guess the Padres were willing to take the gamble his overall athletic skills might allow that hitting improvement. A gamble I would not have taken but don't really know who was available in that draft slot that they though had better upside. If with the options at that pick they saw nothing more certain ... they gamble. Would be more concerned if they took that gamble with their 1st round pick.

Quote from BoosterSD on June 2, 2019, 1:44 pmI am still hoping for Bishop from ASU. LHP corner bat, AVG and power have improved, and from what I have seen (limited) has better speed than Bleday.

Quote from fenn68 on June 3, 2019, 5:01 amBased on the mock drafts it appears the either Abrams or Greene (both HS hitters) will be there for the Padres and they would take either one. Both work for me but biased towards Abrams with potential as a SS/CF. Both seem to have the hitting skills.
MLB Network had their pre-draft show and interviewed Abrams ... very impressive / articulate with what appears to be a very good sense of his approach to baseball / success. He would prefer to remain at SS. Harold Reynolds was very positive about his ability to remain at SS at the ML level. Since it is usually easier to move from the INF to the OF ... would guess he is worked as a SS to start and shift to CF if needed in AA/AAA.
====
They also commented on the top 5 performers out of last years' first day picks and Xavier Edwards was on the list with a ton of praise from Callis - Reynolds - Mayo and were surprised he slid so far last year. Basically though he would be an impact ML player.
======
One of the top draft prospects is a Baylor catcher (Langeliers) who they suggested was the best defensive catcher to come out in a decade but has hitting issues. Interestingly the comp the used was Austin Hedges ... which suggests that the MLB Network crew actually is paying some attention to the Padres and recognize Hedges defense skills.

A lot of talent in Bishop ... maybe even as a big CF. The one concern seems to be that he has a lot of swing and miss in his game.
Did see a comment from Mayo that he may be on the Padres radar since they would like a college bat (assuming Bleday is gone).
