Side note: given Myer's contract basically kills his trade value (without eating a major chunk ... and even then?) and considering 2019 is still a work in progress .... might focus less on dealing Myers (get him back to LF) given his 2019 contract is less the $6MM and roll the dice he stays healthy and put up his 2016 and 2017 numbers (when he played over 150 games each season and carried a .290 or so OPS). Shift this winter's focus on finding trade partners for Renfroe (other than the power ... still not convinced on him and that maybe be a selling high scenario) or Reyes (who I really like as a hitter but not in the field ... this is the NL). IF Myers returns to those two previous levels ... next winter could construct a better deal.

I still dont know if there is room on the team for Myers even if you move Renfroe or Reyes. I think that Cordero still becomes the best option in RF. Although you could start the season with Cordero in AAA and start Myers at 3B, while letting Renfroe and Reyes better(hopefully) their trade worth in the 1st half of the season. Then move the one that returns the best trade pieces. If Myers over the winter can better his footwork and arm slot at 3B, then we have filled a hole internally. If not, eventually need to find a place to move him. Does BOS need anyone at 1B? Myers might excel not having to be the man in that BOS lineup.

I think both Renfroe and Reyes are both better suited for LF IMO, and then it boils down to whose bat you prefer at that time. Reyes is younger with more control years, so that is becoming more desirable in todays MLB.

So reading MLBTR, the Reds are attempting to move Senzel to the OF with the extension of Suarez and possible extension of Gennett. What would SD have to do to pry Senzel out of CIN. What are they in the need of in CIN. OF, INF, Catcher? Obviously needs pitching, not that we have a lot of options to trade without harming us. Anyway SD eats enough money and the right prospects to work a Myers Senzel based trade?

Dude, you broke him just by thinking about acquiring him!

Sweet, that means in 3 seasons when he's really crappy he will be a Padre!

The Padres need to make a big move/s this offseason.  Here’s why:

    1) Current projected 40-man payroll incl dead $ & arb eligible estimates is only about 77 MM.  That is 30 MM below the ending payroll of last year’s 6th worst team in MLB.

          2) Hosmer & Myers.  Despite that, 31.5 MM is going to 2 guys presumably to win now not “later”.  Pads need more “could play on any MLB team” guys on 25-man roster, less Pirelas & Asuajes

3       3) Need to get to .500 first if intending to contend in 2020 on; can’t try to suddenly win 30-40 more games than 2018 when we’re “ready to contend”.  You get “ready to contend” by winning  more games now.

   4) The Farm system is at its absolute peak:  4 of the top 5 extremely likely to graduate.  No point in making the #1 Farm system even better at the expense of the MLB club.  See # 5.

        5)     Trading Raffy Lopez for cash or PTBNL is fine; there will always be fringe roster guys you just are happy to get something back for.  But as the lava flows up to MLB, it’s a problem to handle EVERY trade out on a one-for-one basis:  You lose leverage.  Pads don’t need for example, a top 100 SP prospect for one of our MLB RH OF; we already have 8 of them (which will create another “trade out” logjam soon)… we need to improve the MLB roster.  To do this, we are going to have to give up some of our prospects.  That is the point of having a good Farm… just ask Boston how they feel about the Kimbrel trade

So here’s what I’d do as GM:

1)      Hold onto Stammen & extend Yates.  Don’t understand majority saying “trade them now”?  We traded a closer & a full-time regular sidearmer (Cimber) plus Makita bombed and Carter Capps never made it back to MLB.  After these 2, except Maton (2nd year) the ENTIRE bullpen made their MLB debuts last year!   These 2 + Castillo + one of many SP’s as long man are locks… still need 3 spots plus depth in AAA.  If anything, need to ADD a vet, not subtract.  If 2019 season disappoints; RP’s hold or build their trade value @ deadline.

Pen is perfectly positioned to transition from the vets to the young guys over the next 2 years, but the only top prospect not on 40-man already is Andres Munoz.  Some current SP’s in system will end up in pen, but that will take time to sort out. Stammen’s inning- eating high leverage high frequency usage is worth far more on the roster than what Pads would get in trade for 1 year of him.   Yates is in the same exact situation Hand was last year; career earnings to date could be dwarfed by even a modest extension.  How about 2 years with team option for 3rd @ 1 MM signing bonus + 2.50 / 6 / 1 MM buyout vs 10 MM salary?  Win-win like Hand’s deal was; Yates protected against injury, 3rd year control adds (trade) value for Pads.

2)     Trade any asset/s not named Tatis or Gore for a legit front of rotation SP.  With Tatis around the corner @ SS or 3B, this is the biggest need.  A legit opening day SP for next 2+ years would take immense pressure off deep stable of SP’s vast majority of whom have zero chance to front a rotation.

I will post separately in detail what I think is a fair offer for Noah Synderrgard is, but a better trade match is probably the Indians, who need a RH power hitting OF; but obviously not interested in Mejia who IMO is our very best trade chip.   Have to sacrifice some quantity for quality here, but no team has Pads huge # of at or near MLB ready SP’s, especially LH.  In the “consolation prize” category would be Sonny Gray for just 1 year @ much lower trade cost.  Now James Paxton (2 yrs) might be an option?

2A)  Keep Myers.  Trade Reyes or Renfroe.  Myers has many maddening characteristics, but his athleticism/baserunning has real value.  The longer, cheaper control of the 2 younger OF gives them more trade value anyway.  Us “Homers” are over-valuing Reyes on 250 AB I believe; he belongs in AL.

3)     Forget the “Big 2”, but try hard to “buy” some OBP:  Josh Donaldson or Michael Brantley.  I HATE what Machado showed in the playoffs, but even I have fantasized about him taking a 1 year deal to build his value back up…. Not happening!    Donaldson (.367 career OBP) on even MLBTR’s proposed 1 year “value rebuild” deal would be the better fit, but Brantley (.351) is also the type of professional hitter the young Pads lineup desperately needs to lengthen lineup, see pitches, and break the insanely ugly streak of being dead last in OBP.   Not fair to expect Urias & Tatis & Mejia to do this in their first full MLB season.  Could try to find a 3B by trade also.

If a legit SP is acquired by trade above at “only” 10 MM cost, it is in the budget to spend 15-20 MM AAV on a shorter term deal here.  3B is either Donaldson or Myers.

4)     If can’t get one of those 2, overpay for: Galvis, Marwin Gonzalez, Jurickson Profar, etc.

SOMEONE has to play SS opening day.  The idea of Greg Garcia / Javier Guerra holding the fort till Tatis is “ready” makes me extremely uneasy.  But if you add 1 big name, no way Galvis comes back; he would be the ideal mentor for Tatis & Urias, but you CAN’T have his .290/.664 OBP/OPS at 3B.  A more natural SS capable utility guy like Gonzalez or Profar would be a better roster fit & substantial upgrade over Garcia (& Spangenberg).

SUMMARY:  2019 Pads can be much better @2018 payroll:  75 MM current + 20 MM big bat + 10 MM SP via trade + 5 MM “net” add SS/Util subtract Spangy = 110 MM + Hot Lava to MLB.  2020 salary & arb eligible increases partly offset by 17 MM off books (12 MM dead $, 5 MM Richard + Stammen).

On Yates and Stammen ... I would expect both are available IF there is a compelling return that benefits the team in 2020-2022 (at a minimum).

Remember that Hand, Cimber, Yates, and Stammen were all developed off the scrap heap ... so maybe the Padres have some confidence they can keep replicating that success with Stock and Wick and PTNL. Have to consider that:

1. Stammen will be 35 and a FA after the season ... not sure that a resigning is in the mix but for now he is low cost and one year of service of a RP of his quality could generate a decent return piece. (do see him more a trade deadline move since the current trade value is not that compelling).

2. Yates will be 32 and has 2 control years ... targeted as a closer. Given Yates' short history of success and of being a closer coupled with his age (much older than Hand when the extension was signed) and the burn out rate of most RP ... not sure an extension is in the plan (certainly not when he is controlled for 2 more years ... maybe a discussion next winter if he does not regress). He is currently projected to get $3MM in arbitration (guessing IF a successful closer in 2019 about $6MM in 2020). FA at 34 which may be his best shot at getting some team to multi-year money and hard to pass that opportunity on a one year extension deal unless it is significant money. Less likely they deal him I guess since he could be a key in 2020 but again it is the return that matters.

On the bats:

1. don't see a fit with Brantley who is only a corner OF and will command a multi-year / relatively costly deal ... along with in history of DL time. He would have to squeeze out all but one of Myers, Renfore, Reyes, Cordero since for that kind of contract he would not be platooned.

2. Fair chance Donaldson goes for a 1 year pillow contract (but big dollars) ... (STL?) ... but if that is what he does he most likely would want to land in a hitter's park and on a contender to showcase his strength ... hitting. He is not young so that may be his last option vs. holding for a multi-year deal.

Not really finding high profile quality hitters on the market (or at least rumored) especially if OBP is a key .. and given the OF logjam the add would have to be exceptional to justify bumping the prospects. This is tough .... they may have to go with lower profile names the MIGHT help for 3B or platoon roles. Garcia for the bench is more an OBP factor than the others ... maybe Diaz (3B) from Cleveland could do the same.
