Who will replace Melvin next year ?
Quote from sportwarrior on November 21, 2023, 1:34 pmShildt's presser was about as solid as you could hope. He delivered lots of party-line speak, but in an earnest and heartfelt fashion. I am a fan of his "baseball way" approach to building a team and organizational philosophy and hope that he can help deliver a positive one from his new seat.

Quote from WindsorUK on November 21, 2023, 2:05 pmHe has experience, been around the organisation, knows the players. The fact he's taken teams to the playoffs can't be bad either.
He'll treat these guys like managers should treat players- he'll put the TEAM first.

Quote from fenn68 on November 21, 2023, 3:35 pmSeems as though Shildt has a great relationship with Tatis … heard he worked extensively with him in his return from the injuries / surgeries / suspension and he did give great praise to Tatis today … that relationship can only be good for the future.
Most say he is a “players’ manager” (good relationships) and is supposedly great handing the bullpen (not sure how that meshes with Niebla who also is good with the pen).
The intro meeting is alway optimistic … so take that for what it is worth. Pretty sure the first time he has been perceived as making a bad move some of the fans will be all over him as being incompetent … just part of the game.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 21, 2023, 3:39 pmShildt seems like the safe pick. If you believe in the value of continuity and experience it's probably the right pick. He seems like Melvin with a little more fire in his belly. I was warming to the idea of Gil, but I'm fine with Shildt.

Quote from fenn68 on November 21, 2023, 3:51 pmPart of the continuity comes in the form of a very complete understanding of the prospects ... he was very fluid in his recital of the key prospects ... he was involved with them last winter ... during the season and after. So will have an educated first hand evaluation of who (and how soon) some will impact the ML. He had excellent comments on Merrill (who apparently was outside with his girlfriend).
If he and Preller see the prospects the same way (and that is a positive projection) ... that may impact off season moves (adds / subtractions / length of contracts for adds)
Easiest on is Marsee, is he on tract for being a ML CF ... if so ... maybe spending to add Lee is not the play with limited funds.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 22, 2023, 12:23 pmSeeing some reports that Adrian Gonzalez had an under the radar interview. One of my favorite players growing up. I doubt he was a serious candidate, but I would love to see him get involved with the team again in some capacity.

To me, Lee makes sense if you are trading both Soto and Grisham. You need a more experienced bat in the line-up who has seen better pitching and Lee can play all OF positions. Marsee's arm is a little weak for RF, but if Tatis doesn't move to CF, then he's okay in CF and definitely in LF. Lee and Marsee may have similar profiles offensively down the road but Lee is more major league ready at this moment than Marsee and for that reason I would sign Lee if his asking price is within the Padres' limited budget (and after the SP has been addressed). If the Padres end up trading Kim, then Lee is definitely not signing with San Diego.

Money will be the key. A lot of if this then that conditions with sequencing being important.
If the Soto trade (to clear money) is the first shoe, then signing Lee (if the price is right) fits. If Lee is anything like Kim in motivation / style of play he seems to a be Shildt type player. Then if the scouting sees Lee as a legit ML CF and equal or > Marsee defensively (not necessarily GG but even just average) they can continue to trade Grisham. I would expect that the Padres are strategizing on how to extend Kim (everyone likes him and he is now an overall asset) but at the same time they have Bogaerts, Cronenworth, and Merrill (who Shildt also loves for the future). Position shifts (someone sitting in LF/1B/DH)? Push harder on a Cronenworth trade? Ripple effect on Marsee and Pauley?
Additionally if some level of payroll constraint remains in the near future ... if they sign Lee and extend Kim ... might increase the use of league minimum players going forward and FA signings on one year deals or as they did with Wacha, Lugo, Martinez ... "creative" deals with options for 2025.
IF they trade Soto/Grisham ... sign Lee ... hold on Cronenworth we should see some interesting debate on LF and DH in 2024 (unless they get a serviceable body in the Soto trade). Will any of Marsee, Pauley, or Merrill be ready to start the season (probably not). What "low cost" FA would be worth signing on a 1-2 year deal? Wonder if for the immediate DH role ... Brantley would be an option? He is old but hit (when healthy) last year and clearly will be a one year contract less than $10MM.
