Tucupita Marcanopicked up an RBI double for his first hit since coming off the Injured List Saturday. The left-handed hitter has pushed his strikeout rate below teammate Xavier Edwards‘s while hitting for slightly more power than his more-acclaimed fellow infielder.

Infielder Tucupita Marcano paced the Fort Wayne offense with four hits, including a double. Marcano has been elite this season at making contact, although his overall .270/.323/.338 slash-line is below average. Part of Marcano’s issue is that he isn’t making loud contact. His line-drive rate of 12.6% is the fourth lowest in the Midwest League among qualifying hitters. The slender Marcano is still just 19 and if he can fill out a little more, his contact skills make him a legitimate threat offensively.

Michael (San Diego):
Among the second-tier infielders at Single-A last year, who has the best ceiling/who is most likely a big league contributor: Eguy, Justin Lopez or Tucupita Marcano?
Kyle Glaser: Marcano has the best natural feel to hit. He's the guy, although he needs to add a lot, and I mean a lot, of strength over the next few years.

Padres: Tucupita Marcano, INF (No. 6)
Named for the town of Tucupita, where he's from in Venezuela, Marcano signed for $320,000 in July 2016. He’s only 21, but already possesses some of the best plate discipline and strike zone judgment in the organization, as underscored by his 99 walks compared to 76 strikeouts in 212 Minor League games. Marcano also projects as an above-average hitter in the big leagues -- he hit .270 at Class A Fort Wayne in 2019 -- though he’s unlikely to ever offer much in the way of power.

Quote from hoffy51 on March 10, 2021, 3:48 amI don't see how they can not place him at San Antonio this season the way he is hitting. He and Abrams would be quite the infield combo there.

Agree he's a lock for at least AA. The way the roster is composed, I fully expect him to debut this year. He seems like the obvious callup for INF if needed, though Gosuke Katoh & Eguy Rosario have looked good too so far. "My guy" Ivan Castillo (& Brian O'Grady) cold so far.
Think Marcano a lock to be at the Alt site to be an eligible callup before the Minors start their seasons. Will be interesting to see if Abrams is too.

Quote from fenn68 on March 10, 2021, 8:35 amI can easily see both Abrams and Marcano at the alt site in April ... if for nothing more than working against "better" pitching until the minor league season starts. The only limiting factor may be the number allowed at the alternate site if the Padres want to have the AAA team set (but don't have to go that route).
Since Marcano is the only INF on the 40 man likely not on the 26 man ML squad ... odds are him being the emergency INF call up (if a temp fill) rather than making a 40 man roster move.
I would expect if Abrams is added ... it is because he will be here permanently rather than a temp fill. No hurry with arguably Kim, Marcano, Mateo, and Profar ... and maybe Nola potentially ahead of him NOW as reserve INF.
Abrams - Marcano in AA is beginning to look feasible in 2021.

Sources confirmed that Mateo and Marcano have made the team, meaning that outfielder Brian O'Grady will begin the year at the Padres' alternate training site in Peoria.
