Quote from lafnboy13 on August 1, 2022, 8:33 amQuote from Henry Silvestre on August 1, 2022, 8:14 amWhich makes us a better team for the next 3 postseason
Package 1
Murphy + Laureano from A's
Skubal + Gregory Soto+ Fullmer from Detroit
And Josh Bell 1B/DH Nats (will have extra $$ to resign)
OR Package 2
Juan Soto RF (Was)
Contreras C + Robertson RP
In both cases Myers/Hos ex Padres.. in Package # 1 Snell to Jays for extra specs to get all that done..
With Gore pretty much done for the year and Martinez in the bullpen, I don't see it as prudent to trade Snell.

We've made it this far on the back of our starter depth. Every other section of the team has flaked. I am loathe to take away from what got us to this point. The good thing about Snell is that his numbers can only go up from here and has a track record of doing just that. Not to mention he is the freshest on the staff. I think trading Snell is shooting ourselves in the foot. Skubal is a good SP but we have no way of knowing how he will handle the playoff race pressure.

Quote from fenn68 on August 1, 2022, 9:02 amAt this point hard to see moving Snell and adding a quality SP (by using trade chips needed elsewhere).

Quote from fenn68 on August 1, 2022, 9:20 am30 hours … on the clock.
The wait to the end mentality seems to be playing out across MLB with only two bigger trade targets moving so far … Benintendi (rental for peanuts) and Castillo (1+ years for a strong package). Sure a few “filler” moves but not game changing.
Getting close to FOMO from some of the GM … needing (not just wanting) to upgrade but in competition for their targets. Time for them to up their offers today or shift to option two … danger of waiting to tomorrow and getting nothing. Good to be the seller.
With SD, STL, and PHIL neck and neck for the last two Wild Card slots … probably three GM having to make moves under pressure. STL may be the pivot team … in on Soto with SD and in SP (likely Montas) with PHIL … not likely to get both. However, neither WASH nor OAK has to deal their guys now … so they drag it out. Then hard to gauge other bidders for Soto and Montas or teams going for “lesser” alternatives and when.
Still think the LAD are deep into Soto (they have the assets to top SD/STL if they choose) and will be in a good spot to extend him this winter with a major payroll drop. That would probably send STL heavy into Montas … so they still come out OK. Preller then is looking (quickly) to close on his back-up plan. I would be stressed out if my job was to play this game.

Quote from fenn68 on August 1, 2022, 9:33 amSDUT is saying Myers has played his last rehab game. That could go a lot of ways but keep in mind that he has been limited to 1B/DH as his knee is not fully recovered … so an OF role is unlikely.
They don’’t have to activate immediately … but he does become a swing player in deadline moves. Alternatively they don’t have to activate him at all near term.
With only 11 position players (excluding catchers) on the active roster … carrying Hosmer and Voit and Myers just will not work for INF/OF depth. Worse is that they all carry a significant CBT impact and releasing anyone is not really a help for 2022.
Sort of a background noise Preller has to deal with while we all focus on adds.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on August 1, 2022, 9:41 amPreller needs to do 3 things today
1 Finish Musgrove and sign the contract
2 Get Gregory Soto +/or Fullmer from Detroit
3. Get Josh Bell (2nd best overall Bat available) use Myers for $$ relief and attach a better spec to the deal..like SS Acosta
None of these moves will "prevent us" from getting Juan Soto or others tomorrow
We improve BP.. We improve SLG and we improve 1B/DH ...
Left for tomorrow.
Improving OF..way i look at it Profar in LF.. weakness at CF and RF.. TATIS covers either... so ONE OF add a must. 2 better ..
Improving C.. more of a post addressing BP/OF move than a true need
SP depth.. more with can I get someone controlled beyond 22 at a reasonable cost vs a must need
AJP gets TODAY done...Tomorrow becomes more "Gravy on Top" vs absolute chaos bummer type day
PS I don't see at least one of Hosmer/Myers/Voit surviving this deadline
