Do you guys think #19 Efrain Contreras can net us Zach Davies SP type 2 month rental (needed if we were to trade Snell)?

Quote from fenn68 on July 11, 2022, 10:23 amQuote from Henry Silvestre on July 11, 2022, 8:48 amI dont think Waters is anywhere near MLB ready so this trade has nothing to do with Benintendi coming or going...Is more of a gamble on Waters turning it around and being relevant or at least in a battle for CF in 2023...
Braves in essence got a lifer minor leaguer 3B who just isn't good enough to make it..BUT also $2.2 mil slot in pick #35 in the draft... which is of >Braves long term...
It's kind of a smart trade for both teams
I can clearly see the deal from ATL’s side … the extra $2MM+ in the draft pool will allow them to be more flexible in who they draft … along with the extra pick.
KC … a team that needs prospects … only gets 3 players … none really are that compelling at this point. They effectively save $2.2MM that they don’t have to spend in the draft … maybe it is the money?
Now the COMP PICK is still a long shot to be a ML player and a long way out so maybe not that big an issue.
IF the money is in play … maybe it will hard to deal with KC and include a player with a pricy contract. On the other hand, not having to spend $2MM+ this month in the draft might be freeing up money to take on a ML contract. So could go either way or be totally unrelated … no help here.

Quote from fenn68 on July 11, 2022, 10:29 amQuote from Henry Silvestre on July 11, 2022, 8:53 amWonder if KC would trade Benintendi for Estury Ruiz straight up...(Ruiz was traded to us from KC)..
Not sure I would do that...even if Ruiz just becomes a valuable 4th OF ..his tools (speed/bat speed/hit) for 6 yrs of control are > than Benentendi for 2 months in my opinion...with that said I would trade a much higher ranked prospect Ruiz (#28) like Ferguson (#13) for Benentendi
Probably not straight up … but he would be the prime piece. Unless we are missing something on Ruiz … despite the ranking … he is a way better prospect than #28 and way better than Ferguson whose trade value is near zero.

He is batting .265 with a .342 OBP and a true CFer and signed through 2023 on a 2 year deal for $9M. So the CBT hit would not be as difficult to cover as Benintendi.
Lamet and maybe Mears for Taylor?
Not sure Taylor is an upgrade tbf to Grishman.. he is having a career year and still only slightly better than Grishman.. if Grishman has a career norm 2nd half ..he would be >... to Improve on Grishman we need Reynolds /Hays or Laureano otherwise we just spinning wheels....
Can’t wait for Grisham to maybe rebound to a level he has not achieved since early 2021 … basically a year. Taylor is a CF and is NOW doing better. If nothing else, Taylor is an upgrade over Azocar plus in 2023 he creates some insurance with the FA of Myers, Mazara, and probably Profar, plus the continue under performance from Grisham.
Now not a big fan of Taylor’s offense but not a fan of the Padres OF offense now and as it stands in 2023. He should cost a low level prospect at best.

Quote from fenn68 on July 11, 2022, 11:03 amI wonder if a different spin on trading a pitcher might work. Keep Snell since he is pitching well now and is controlled in 2023 when most of the SP have gone via FA.
Instead, trade Manaea (FA after the season and a big paycheck) to a contender for prospects) … he has tapered off in the past month and (next to Gore) is the worst of the SP right now. He may be struggling but teams like TOR and BOST have much worse SP … plus he is not a long term commitment.
Take the extra CBT payroll space to add the desired bat … taking the full contract while not trying to push a player with a large contract on the seller … for prospects. Manaea’s money would be a push for Benintendi or Contreras or Bell.
I see zero chance the Padres resign Musgrove, Manaea, Clevinger, and (probably) Martinez for 2023 while spending to build some offense. If so, is 2022 better dealing a “rental” SP for effectively a “rental” bat.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 11, 2022, 11:36 amFor the record I have a list of not available in trades prospects
WOOD/MERRILL/ACOSTA/SUSANA
As long as we keep these 4.. I am ok trading everyone/anyone else... I think all 4 of these guys have TOP 20 in baseball type ascending careers..and I think Wood and Merrill will be All Star level MLBers...with Acosta and Susana right there..but a lot more projection ??? Because of youth and level...

I think Bo Mel (Manea like a son) would prefer Clevinger be that guy vs Manea if Snell is not that guy....
Still think is possible to add $10-$20mil worth of trade $$ (salary not owed $$)by moving Voit + Lamet + Hill + (maybe Suarez/Kim and/or Myers)... so there is a path ..But the path of less resistance is one of Snell/Clev/Manea for sure

Quote from BoosterSD on July 11, 2022, 10:19 pmDavid Dahl has been released by MIL. Not sure if AAA is the whacked out hitters park that EP is, so not sure what to make of his .294/.357/.468 mark with nine round-trippers in 280 trips to the plate stats.
But was once a high level prospect, and a decent ML track record.

He was an all star not too long ago... RF only type... mightbm be worth keeping in AAA for insurance... Mazara/Wil should be very good platoon in RF ...BTW Wil rehab in LE Storm..I will see him tomorrow night..
On a 2nd note .. perhaps we should look into KC's Barlow (closer)..controlled til 25 and only making $2.4 mil.. would answer insurance for 2022 need. And low cost option for the next few yrs with Closer experience...
