Drew Pomeranz just left the clubhouse with a suitcase. Presumably, he is on his way to begin a rehab assignment.
A pretty big deal.
Not a trade ..but like a trade

Quote from fenn68 on August 1, 2022, 4:07 pmNot sure what other teams (other than Cleveland) are even looking at adding a Contreras level catcher. Since he is a "rental" with a big salary ... not sure on the Cubs bargaining power. I guess if the offer is better than a 2023 Comp Pick that should do it. Does not help the Contreras is in a month long slump ... and want him productive for only 2 months. Maybe standing pat for some teams is fine.
Maybe the Cubs are trying to get a better deal by linking Contreras - Happ - Robertson but that is a lot of players (and money) to add to one team at his point and displacing three incumbents and finding a team that actually wants all three may not be that easy .... unless you are targeting the Padres. Again, money offset would be tricky.
Maybe Preller (and others) "know" there is a low interest level for the Cub players ... not they are not good but maybe don't fit a teams need at the price at this time. Sort of a limited number of buyers waiting for the Cubs ask to drop ... a lot.

Reds Agree To Trade Tommy Pham; Acquiring Team Unknown
My heart be still!
Strangely enough, to the Red Sox
Someone has to explain this one to me ... Red Sox deal Vasquez their #1 C for a prospect(s) I can understand given their current fall from contention. Trading for Pham who is on a mutual option for 2023 but not really hitting all that well in CINN and is 34. Mutual option is for $6MM (v a $1.5MM buyout). I guess BOST plans to exercise the mutual option ... expect Pham to exercise his part and if he does Boston will be paying about $2MM for the remainder of 2022 and add $1.5MM for the buyout to get 2 months of Pham on a losing team? Maybe some money is in this deal but still??????

Word is that Hosmer has been told he is not being traded ... or at least the Padres are not "trying" to trade him. However with the right offer??????
Don't think the Cubs want Campusano since their top prospect is a catcher probably rated ahead of him. Probably would take Nola in the deal but need some other prospect(s). Still does not solve the money problem.

Quote from fenn68 on August 1, 2022, 6:39 pmJust a rumor / speculation from some pundits (2 different) … they are now handicapping SD in third place behind STL and LAD (each had one of the two).
Apparently the separator is that both STL and LAD are willing to include young ML talent valued more than anything SD is (or would) offer.
If getting some young controllable ML talent over all prospects … not much Preller can do to offset that.
