Trade Possibilities
Quote from MrPadre19 on July 31, 2018, 10:51 amNo I've been following him.
He may end up a valuable major league player.
I just don't see where he would play on this team with Hosmer,Myers and Naylor?
I also left off Eflin,Burch Smith,Joe Ross,Seth Streich,Jesse Hahn and RJ Alvarez as players we traded who are not missed.
The point still remains....MANY prospects who seem a big loss to trade away don't end up any loss at all.
But the major league players usually continue to be productive.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 31, 2018, 11:08 amI don't really care if we get Archer or don't get Archer.....depending on who we send of course.
But to say he isn't any good is just wrong.
He pitches in the AL East for one thing......and in the AL with a DH.
Last year he threw 201 innings only allowing 193 hits and "249" strikeouts!
What hurt him last year was the long ball and he has only allowed 11 this year after 27 in 2017.
Again..if we get him or don't I don't really care but Archer for 3 years in the NL....in Petco...in the NL West and with Balsley will be a pretty good get....espcially if we don't give up any players who would help us in the next 3 years.
If Preller makes it he must be OK with the prospect cost.

I don't think anyone here is saying he isn't any good. He's absolutely a solid #3 type pitcher. But he's being TREATED like a #1 by the Rays. It'd be insane to give up #1 value for a guy like him, especially when we almost certainly won't be ready to compete until 2020.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 31, 2018, 12:15 pmI would think he's more a solid #2 but I understand your point.
He would "clearly" be the best starter on our staff...maybe for the length of his deal.
His ERA for the Padres would easily be a full 1/2 run lower than he has now...probably even lower.
Keep in mind we don't know what AJ has offered.....maybe "he" is treating him as a #3 which is all that really
matters.
EDIT:Throw out Archers April and his ERA is 3.34
Obviously he got off to a slow start and he missed most of June.

Quote from Commie on July 31, 2018, 12:42 pmLooks like they dodged a bullet as PIT gets Archer. Interesting to see the return as it must be bwbett than the Pads offer. Can't remember what upper level c pospect they have. Assuming TAM found their OF guy in the Pham deal.

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2018, 1:11 pmBeen in Boston and NYC last week and a lot of potential trade talk. The "consensus" seem to be that on a "good team" Archer would be a solid #3 (maybe a #2 on certain contenders) but is not a #1 (and never really was) but TB is marketing him as a #1 which is why no action until today. (will be interesting to see what Pitt ponied up).
On thought that was out there on the Padres pursuit (not speaking any specific prospects) but it could have been part of the Padres strategy to use this deal in part to create 40 man roster space for the roster crunch this winter along with getting a decent arm that seems to go out and pitch effectively for every start (stability). Basically pick-up 1 40 man roster player and deal a bundle of 40 man roster (or needed to be added this winter). I guess they think a lot more of some of the current and potential roster adds than I do but would make sense IF the move the right bodies.
======
Padres need hitters with the upper part of the system somewhat void of hitters in needed positions ... Tatis for SS and Urias for 2B are there but Naylor (blocked by Hosmer), Mejia and Allen (blocked ... as a starter by Hedges who is not losing his spot to either defensive lacking catcher). I guess if any of those three were in a deal ... not a crisis given their future PADRE value appears limited. (Ugly if move to the going forward major holes of 3B or a corner OF slot).
side note: last I looked the 2B trio of Spangenberg - Asuaje - Pirela have delivered the lowest 2B OPS, SLG, and dWAR for any team in MLB. They are all in their "older" and getting "older" and not prospects. Sort of why even though Urias may not be a super star in the future ... hard to imagine him not being a significant improvement over the current group. No other Padre prospects for 2B near term. So would not deal him ... probably does not have that much trade value anyway as a singles hitting 2B ... nice to have if you have that type of player but not so nice that you would give much up to get him.

Quote from Commie on July 31, 2018, 1:33 pmGlasnow, Meadows, + is a pretty steep price, but one the Pads could have beat without mortgaging the future.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 31, 2018, 1:50 pmWe may have offered a better package but maybe not as major league ready.
Glasnow and Meadows will be contributing for the Rays immediately.
So I guess Yates and Stammen stay for the time being.

Quote from 3fingersplit on July 31, 2018, 3:06 pmSo the word is that Tampa Bay wanted Austin Hedges, Hunter Renfro, Chris Paddack and Luis Patino for Archer and ??
That would have been so wrong on so many levels....glad AJ didn't do it

Quote from dusty on July 31, 2018, 4:56 pmI’m really glad they didn’t make the deal either. Seems like Preller was smarter than a lot of ppl were lead to believe. Gotta think he was putting his toes in the water to get a jump on discussions heading into winter. Gotta think the padres have a “fun” offseason.
