I have to wonder how much the roster crunch to protect Rule 5 eligibles this winter factors into Preller's "choices" in structuring any deal ... is he bias to dealing for non-roster players? Would fit into his track recored of dealing for young high ceiling prospects in the lower ranks.
Consider (if no trades come down) that at the end of the season 3 players come off the 40 man as FA but 3 players are added back coming off the 60 day DL ... so the add/deletes start with a full 40 man. The balance between protecting the young quality prospects and actually having a 25 man roster of ML ready options does squeeze out a lot of older fringe players. So, if nothing is done via trade, potentially:
+ Urias (AAA) - Guerra (AAA)
+ Kennedy (AAA) - Lockett (AAA) ... Kennedy has a chance to make the 25 next season given his work in EP
+ Austin Allen (AA) - Dickerson (DL) ... always protect a catcher who can hit and unfortunately Dickerson has proven to be injury prone
+ Paddack (AA) - Makita (AAA) ... hopefully someone claims the 33 year old Makita to save about a $1.6MM
+ Nix (AA) - Wieck (AAA) .... Wieck just has not put it together and will be 28
+ Olivares (A) - Brewer (AAA) ... still to much upside on Olivares and if Brewer at 26 has not taken the next step in AAA
+ Espinosa (A) - either (Mitchell or Lyles or Hughes) ... keep in mind that the 25 man needs some pitchers so can't drop everyone (at least now)
note that still leaves Wingenter and Avila unprotected among some lesser options. Also, if we assume that Lamet and Cordero can start 2019 on the 60 day DL still leaves room for 2 non-roster adds at the end of ST.

I know Mejia is the 15th rated prospect...but is he really that good?
What is it that he does so Well?
His numbers are good not great.
Is his ranking so high because he’s 22 and in AAA?
How is his defense?

From Fangraphs listed as a 60 FV which would make him our new #2 prospect based on FV (Tatis 65/Urias and Gore 55)

Mejia wasn’t/isn’t a lost cause as a defensive catching prospect, but his bat is almost ready for the big leagues. It’s that ability to hit that prompted a move to third base during the Arizona Fall League and, now, reps in left field to accelerate Mejia’s timetable to Cleveland. He certainly has the arm for wherever Cleveland wants to play him. It’s an 80-grade howitzer that elicited audible gasps from AFL crowds. His hands and footwork at third were predictably raw.
Mejia’s swing isn’t graceful or attractive, but he finds ways to get the bat head to the baseball and hit the ball really hard, enabled by elite hand-eye coordination and bat control. He’s a little too aggressive at the plate, so the OBP and game power might both play down if he doesn’t become more selective — and we’re in wait-and-see mode on the defense — but there’s special offensive talent here.
Looks to be our 3B of the future perhaps

You would have to think that there are additional pieces coming back to SD, two ML for 1 MiL seems really short changed on the SD side.

As MR P asked, do we install him at 3B, or is the end for Hedges?

Things I'm reading says that he has not done well at 3B and was being tried in LF. Can he be much worse than Villanueva?

Nothing else coming back.
I’m hoping he can change positions....was looking forward to an Austin/Austin Catching platoon(Hedges/Allen)
RH/LH....Defense/Offense.
Just makes too much sense.
