Pair the Franco rumor with that ridiculous Heyman story that the Pads are in on Machado and what is probably happening is that AJP is trying to work into a deal that would be a ramification of a Machado to PHI deal.
Franco is not worth much. I wouldn't do Spangenberg straight up for him for instance. More along the lines of Erlin or the second tier of SP guys in AAA and AA. Just don't see the attraction. He's not an improvement over Villanueva.

I’m not a fan either.....just passing along what I read.
The thinking being that maybe he could still turn it around and that he would only be a piece.
If we got one of their top pitching prospects and Franco for a reliever it could be worth the chance.
Who else we got at 3B next season.....Ty France?
Daniel Descalso?

"Of course, as the GM warned, a glut of available arms means it's quite possible none bring back anything close to an Aroldis Chapman/Andrew Miller type of haul if it turns into a buyer's market.
"There are so many relievers available, there's no reason to overpay," the GM said. "And as other teams become sellers, the market could become flooded with even more arms."

Might just signal no trade of Hand, Yates, or Stammen considering they are under control going forward and low cost. Doubt sells low for no real upside.

Villanueva ???
Not me....I think he is a terrible 3B that runs into a pitch on occasion and pitchers have found the massive hole in his swing so now it's a diminishing prospect....he would be in the minors for any other team
His footwork is so bad....good enough arm but painful to watch as an old infield coach

With season ending injuries to both Cozart and RP Jewell, the Angels are becoming decimated by injuries but still have a shot for post season play.
Stammen and Spangenberger for AAA - 3B prospect Taylor Ward? Too much, too little either way or possibly a fair trade? Doesn't seem to have a ton of power, but has good bat/OBP skills.

Interesting thought, but first thing that came to mind is why wouldn't LAA just play Ward rather than trade him and try to acquire BP help by itself? He's playing well in AAA. Also two legit, not great, MLB players for a decent, not great, prospect seems light on the return.
That said, Stammen and Wingenter for Ward I would do. Believe Wingenter is one of the Rule 5 protect guys this off season, but not sure he will ever be more than a AAAA fireballer.

Not sure what you see in Ward that clearly makes him that special as a 3B prospect? Before this year he was a catcher who was projected as a ML back-up because of a light bat and will be 25 next season and ranked somewhere around #10 (due to plus defense as a catcher) in a weak LAA farm system. Yes, has some good stats in the PCL (in SLC) ... but that is the PCL (SLC) and have no idea if he can field 3B at all having never played there before. Agree that if he were that good he would be called up for 3B now by the LAA.
Would add that the LAA are falling quickly and, despite some rumors, are more likely to fold the tent on 2018 sooner than later without making a deal.
On the flip side, probably under estimating the trade value of Stammen in a very large market for RP (even set-up RP) with quality stats this season and under control in 2019 with a club favorable contract. Not going to get a "top prospect" but a good chance they could score a lot better than Ward if Preller follows in pattern an dips into prospects in A ball or lower.
At some level would take a look at Ward (if the scouts like him) but might be a winter deal when LAA tries to regroup and can expect Cozart back and healthy (note now that looks like a bad FA signing for LAA since before the injury Cozart totally underperformed ... 3 years / $38MM!)

Good chance Villanueva is this year's Schimpf ... gone next season as the league has found his faults and he has not (cannot) adjust. Barring a different move (that is not apparent) ... Spangenberg will be the incumbent and they may try to move Pirela into the mix so Asuaje / Urias hand 2B.
However, would not rule out Franco .... IF Preller wants to take the chance (as reports suggest), I am pretty confident Philly would love to dump him for not all that much (especially if they pay the big bucks for Machado). Could be a winter deal BUT if Philly might surprise if they cannot find a legit SS to fill in during Crawford's injury .... and MIGHT take a Galvis / Spangenberg package for Franco (toss some minor stuff on the side). Pretty confident that would work for Philly in a pennant race IF Preller really like Franco (note: I don't).

UP FRONT I DO NOT EXPECT THIS TO HAPPEN BUT:
Joel Sherman is speculating that the Padres are out making Myers available ... not quite the same as pushing to trade him but making in clear he could be in play. Heard that from some other unreliable sources.
Now just because he has worn out his general welcome in SD does not mean other teams might not be interested ... under the right price. If by some chance he get hot in the next 5 weeks maybe ... if he gets hot for the rest of the season maybe a winter deal.
Padres have been know to buy down contracts to get decent prospects which may make Myers more interesting ... the last two season were of ML quality so someone would gamble. Since it is again a "sunk money" situation not out of the question. Two contenders that may need offensive are Philly and SF. Over the winter a team like Cleveland is losing multiple OF parts and their prospect are not developing. Philly / SF have the money while Cleveland has the prospects on a contract buy down.
They moved Shields ... they moved Kemp .... so don't discount this out of hand.

Any GM would be a fool to get Myers. The kid has talent, but just watch his double the other night in Arlington and then watch the one hit by Renfroe the next at bat. Myers hits it and kind of watches to see if it lands fair instead or running. Luckily he hit it right on the line and made it to second easily. Then watch Renfroe. As soon as he hits it, he books towards first. I was yelling at Myers at the game to run. He just doesn't get it. Sad.
