Quote from fenn68 on December 10, 2019, 4:10 pmThe Padres traded second baseman Luis Urias to the Brewers a couple weeks ago, and now they’re attempting to replace him. To that end, they’ve “been trying to” swing a deal for Royals second baseman/outfielder Whit Merrifield, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

Re heat the those rumors!

IF (and that is a big IF) the Padres land Merrifield for 2B expect Profar to become the super utility guy a la Zobrist.
He is athletic enough (and has some experience) in all the INF and in the OF ... switch hitter with power off the bench.
Listened to a couple of folks with knowledge of his time in OAK .. and they absolutely love him as a person who will do whatever it takes to stay in the ML ... so well suited for the super utility role.

Quote from TatisJr on December 10, 2019, 4:18 pmShould be a mighty steep price, but adding Merrifield is an exciting idea. I wonder if Morejon, Cal, Owen Miller or Potts would be enough to pry him from KC?

Quote from JasonE135 on December 10, 2019, 4:23 pmThis is just a re-run of an Acee story from a while ago. The Padres already looked into Merrifield and found the price far too high. AJ was talking about the Padres future with Gore and Patino in it just yesterday. He wouldn’t be doing that if he was considering trading them. It would cost at least one of them to get Merrifield. AJ is past looking at him.

Quote from fenn68 on December 10, 2019, 4:33 pmAnother case where the selling team (KC) does not NEED to trade him since he is on one of the best team friendly contracts giving the 4 years of control. So "listen" and ask for the moon ... might get someone to bite and if not ... there is always next year.

Quote from TatisJr on December 10, 2019, 6:31 pmOn the flip side for KC Merrifield is also 30 and they aren’t close to contending. I don’t think the Padres acquisition of Profar would rule out them being in the mix for Whit. First being that Merrifield is an absolute stud. Secondly he is a versatile guy capable of playing all 3 OF spots, 2nd and first. I know most of us aren’t fans of moving guys around because it didn’t work so well for Myers. If you look up the road to the Dodgers Taylor, Hernandez, Bellinger, Joc, Muncy, Barnes and Lux are all multiple use, versatile athletes capable of covering the diamond. It’s worked out very well for them and it’s a nice luxury for Tingler when injuries, slumps happen or splits/platoons are necessary. Hosmer will get a shot to hit lefties to start the year, but if he doesn’t show improvement in that area early I expect the Padres will be quick to plug a RHH bat in at 1stbase vs lefties. Profar does own left handed pitching and I could see him getting the ABs there when a lefty takes the bump.

Quote from dusty on December 10, 2019, 6:45 pmThis news of adding whit is just stunning to me due to the depth at second and I never would have thought of the possibility of a zobrist type player. Things are definitely getting interesting. Have to wonder if a Myers deal is becoming a legit possibility now. If they find someone to pick up enough money then ownership may essentially be saying whit is worth the money Wil is owed and don’t see it as too much of a sunk cost

Quote from 3fingersplit on December 10, 2019, 7:07 pmI read all of these trade ideas and keep reading about dead money and eating portions of contracts as a way to get somebody else and unload current players on the roster and then read about the wheeling and dealing that AJP is doing or trying to do.....has anybody looked at or added up the amount of money that has been spent / pissed away / dead / or trying to unload since AJP has been here ?
I know Fowler and Seidler need to sign off on everything but just curious what the $$$ are.....Shields, Kemp, Upton, Middlebrooks, Kimbral, Headley, Mitchell, Kinsler, Meyers, Hosmer, Machado etc
I guess the return in getting rid of these guys with the exception of the current roster players has been good but what are the dollars?

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 10, 2019, 7:33 pmProfar could be the RH 1B if we sign Merrifield.
As well as fill in around the diamond...ph...pr,etc.
