2 rumors from MLBTR...
- As expected, the Padres are hoping to trade pricey and underperforming outfielder/first baseman Wil Myers, Jayson Stark of The Athletic reports. The Padres appear highly motivated to part with Myers, according to Stark, who adds that there’s even a willingness on the team’s part to attach prospects from its loaded farm system if it would encourage someone to take the veteran off its hands. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported back in September that the Padres would “likely” be willing to eat half of the $60MM left on Myers’ contract to get rid of him. At this point, it’s unknown whether the amount’s still in that ballpark. Myers, who turns 30 on Tuesday, has another three years left on his deal.

#Angels are heavily engaged in the catcher market, have 6-8 options. GM Billy Eppler said they have active conversations with two teams regarding a trade for a catcher.
Re Myers: Sounds like a new "report", but the link was old. I think when Castellanos & esp Ozuna are signed it will help his value. If not spending > 10 MM + to sign a FA SP, don't see much need to give away the farm just to dump half his salary; don't see the point of Lucchesi/Quantrill in the deal any more... maybe a guy just to entice someone to pull the trigger....
Re Hedges: For what Nats & highly possible LAA are investing in Stras & Cole, why NOT their own personal ELITE defensive C to make them even better/maximize their value? Don't think this idea is as ludicrous as it sounds; personal C for the Ace, rotate 1 start among the other 4 SP's (40% of starts), and use him as a "closer" when leading in close games after 6 innings when he's not the starter; sub him out after 6 when losing when he is the starter.

I think Hedges might be best served going to a team with a younger/rebuilding staff to help them out. I know that we have that same situation here, younger staff. However, it appears that he has kind of worn out his welcome here in SD.

Nats have Suzuki and Gomes. I’d imagine they are focused on other positions now. The Astros, Yankees, Angels and Rangers could all use catching help though. My hope is the Padres can package Hedges with some young pitching to the Cubs for Contreras. If money figures are close it would be nice to offer Cole the best defensive catcher in baseball. Angels and Yanks must have some level of interest in acquiring Hedges.

After one report a couple of days ago that the Padres are tying hard to trade Hedges a different report yesterday said that it appears the Padres will try to make the Mejia / Hedges duo work.
Reinforces the risk of believing any rumors we hear at his time of the year (maybe at anytime). If there was any substance behind those rumors ... one of two implications:
- The market for an all defense / no offense catcher does not exist ... a least a market that requires the trade partner to give anything in return. In turn, that may be telling us that we may be way over valuing Hedges defense given his poor offense.
- The availability of catcher to replace Hedges (if they really are available) is substantially over priced ... made worse by a long list of teams seeking a starting catcher upgrade.
Big demand for catchers ... no demand for Hedges ... time to re-evaluate.

As has been stated many times before, if we get enough offense from the other positions on the field, then we can live with Hedges bat in the line up. I think most will agree that LF is improved. CF seems to be a platoon that should help improve that position. RF???? Can Tingler get something above average from Myers? If, so great. Machado, Tatis are not the issue. Profar and Cronenworth should upgrade 2B, at least from what Kinsler gave to start the season. And Hosmer, while many are not thrilled by him and his contract, did drive in 99 runs last season.
So maybe SD does not have to worry about C as much as the media is thinking.

Would have thought that a good hitting team that needs a catcher would have drawn the same conclusion (e.g. HOU or LAA) and bid for Hedges ... not yet happened so either Preller's ask is unreasonable or other teams really don't have a high value on Hedges.
Padres have improved their offense ... but probably not enough carry a sub-.200 catcher other than as a "back-up". Nothing to support this thought .. but don't have the feeling that Hedges will be happy (or a positive force) in the "back-up" role.

Marsh (not top 100) for Hedges makes sense to me-- bring in another lefty swinging high OBP guy (like Grisham) that can play all 3 OF spots-- Made big strides in his development and with Prospects 1 (Adell) 2 (Marsh) and 3 (forgot his name) for the LAA .. Angels dont really need him /can use him in the next several yrs and his ETA is 2020, but so is Adell's who they can plug in RF from day 1.. Hedges has dual impact on Angels

Marsh would be a pretty good get for Hedges. Fangraphs is pretty bullish and has him top 100. Only going to be 22 to start the year so he could definitely see his prospect stock rise a little late. Open up the door for Mejia to take a good bulk of the C duties unless AJP is still planning on searching outside the org for a catcher.

Padres would have to add to Hedges to get Marsh ... but would like if they could.
LAA has long term commitments to Upton (LF) and Trout (CF) with an elite prospect in Adell ticketed for RF ... so Marsh is a good trade chip for them.
Given their real need for multiple upgrades to the SP staff even if they add Cole ... Hedges with a quality SP (ML ready) could be a good offer. They really don't need offense for 2020.
Hedges and Quantrill?
On the other hand ... going to need the Padres to do some aggressive house cleaning of LHH prospects arriving near term ... Grisham, Naylor, Trammell, Cordero then add Marsh. With all that, could the Padres get better trade value via a different deal with Quantrill (or any other SP)?

More wishful thinking that an expectation but given the "concerns" around Pham's elbow ... and if the medicals from outside specialists support those concerns ... might the deal be "tweaked"? Sounds as though Preller wants it go through in some form.
A could of years ago the Padres had a deal with MIA that got tweaked because of injury concerns on the pitcher the Padres sent and as a result the Padres did not get a pretty good SP .. Castillo, as I recall.
Could we potentially see Edwards pulled out of the deal ... either fully or substituted for with a "lesser" prospect? From what I have heard TB wants Renfroe for 2020.
