Trade ideas

2b and SP are the only moves I see still in play.

Possibly RF.

SP and RF IMO are dependent on Myers being involved.

We won’t be trading for a #6 starter so he will have to be a quality pitcher and that will cost so Myers will have to go to pay for him.So that would mean a Bos for Price type deal.A deal for a RF’er would pretty much put Myers on the bench....and I don’t see that happening,They aren’t  gonna make things worse by paying Myers $20 mil and then not playing him.

If we trade for a 2b that would cause a logjam unless somehow Garcia or Kinsler are involved.

We aren’t gonna have Profar,Garcia,Kinsler and a new 2b all on the roster.

We’ve been blindsided with every move so far so expect the same at least once more.

Yeah I know Whit would be a huge uograde at 2B but with Profar/Garcia/Kinsler/Quirks/Miller/ Cronesworth I don't see a 2B coming .. Maybe a WHIT or Limdor at the deadline if we are in it.. Otherwise COF and a 1 or 2 type SP...  C only 1 or 2 out there Contreras or Sanchez that I would xonsider BUT more of a luxury vs a need atm

LF: Pham (pretty much every day)

CF: Margot / TG  (TT, Cordero is healthy)

RF: Naylor/ Myers (Cordoba, Oliveras)

Is this the OF situation right now? If so what could be available from FA / trade for everyday RF? Last seen how was Cordero's arm?

It still strikes me as odd that a rebuilding team wouldn't take 30mil of Myers (who has some potential) for like 5 - 6 specs. Especially a team that is looking to tank but needs to spend. Myers is a bit Hollywood too, he isnt boring to watch and may generate fan interest. Frustrating for us given our investment and expectations.

I really liked the idea if signing Wheeler and shedding Myers. Too bad. With these other moves, could have been real lo y complimentary.

Maybe the Price trade makes sense at this point. Why would they take Myers though? It seems to dramatically offset the benefit of shedding Price unless we include cheap players that can lead t their future moves to shed payroll.  Maybe it leads to a Betts future signing and that is enough of a win for them. What would the player cost be? At minimum I would think: Margot (JBJ) + Morejon + C/L (Price and Evoladi). However, wouldn't this be a significant downgrade for them?

Since Boston's issue is the luxury tax ... not really cash, Myers carries only a $13.8 AAV to count against the threshold (not his $20MM salary) while Price counts at $31MM. So for luxury tax purposes Boston would "save" $17.2MM which would get them pretty close to the needed $21MM (although they seem to want to go down an additional $10MM to create some flexibility) and also are looking at still moving Bradley (est. $11MM). If they made both deals ... they make it.

From Boston's side, I guess, they slide Benintendi to CF and put Myers in LF. They would probably try to get a bit more out of SD ... league minimum players or prospect since the have one of the worst farm systems in MLB.

From SD side, get to add about $11MM in payroll (cash basis) ... and a LHSP who most are now projecting as a mid 2 WAR at age 34 (has not been better than that since 2016). Add that he was DL at the end of 2019 with a wrist issue (reportedly surgery was successful) and a lingering issue of some elbow pain. Not looking as though the Padres would be getting the "vintage" Price for ages 34-35-36.

I also was reading a "critique" of Price from a Boston writer ... does not make his sound as a good guy to add to the clubhouse. Basically the writer said Price thinks of himself as a good clubhouse guy but in reality is that he is a negative force (major complaining and somewhat negatively opinionated on management, players).

So, not sure he is worth the risk of being healthy ... rebounding to 2016 levels ... and not being a negative clubhouse force .... not for an additional $11MM.

Plus, not sure Myers is not the better RF alternative for 2020 on the current roster ... not sure Naylor or Cordero are ones to rely on yet. Trammell and Olivares are probably not ready to start the season.

Padres might be better off by not "forcing a Myers trade" now and using some valuable prospects and dealing Naylor and some of those prospects for ?????? upgrade SP.

Did see a note from Cassavell that the Padres will continue to seek upgrade to the pitching (either SP or RP) ... but not overpay (duh!). Pretty safe bet that half of the fans will consider whatever the deal is ... it will be an overpay.

Upgrade is a tricky concept ... tend to think of adding a major impact piece but if getting more wins is the objective upgrades can be less exciting but still make the 26 man roster better.

If we are sitting with Paddack - Lamet - Richards - Davies - Lucchesi then Quantrill on the bubble ... maybe upgrade past Quantrill - Lucchesi - Davies is a winning move if a TOR is only available by an "overpay" (if available at all).

Is the Korean Kim an upgrade? Will Keuchel or Ryu not get the attention they seek and will their price drop to be worth a Padre signing? Is Boyd (DET) and upgrade via trade? Or do you make a full court press on a trade for Kluber?

Preller has to consider all the options and the likelihood the Padres can hit on any (the players and other teams do have something to say about it).

No, I dont consider Boyd an upgrade over Luchessi or Quantrill. A 2019 ERA of 4.56 and a WHIP of 1.23, especially for the price that DET will want in terms of prospects and the $6.4M in arb that he is projected to receive. I would look into Kluber.

Because why would anyone take Price unless they are getting salary relief in the deal?

No one would take Price for free at this point due to his contract.

So either Bos gives him away and pays a portion of his contract to do so...or adds prospects....or takes on another bad contract(Myers) that is less than Prices.

It helps that Bos. Needs a 1B as well.

I just don’t know how much of an upgrade Price is over Lucchesi at this point.

Kluber trade concerns me. I thought a  swap of bad contracts may put Myers money to better use, but as you point out, downside with that too.  Price and Kluber are both very risky; eat up remaining flexibility and indications of regression.

At this point maybe just sit back and take a passive posture.  Teams know our assets are being acquired and the inventory is shrinking.  Let the demand ripen.  I wonder if Preller is trying to sell that with his comments about not wanting to overpay.

Blackmon (LHH) is expensive, but far more productive than Myers and has a great bat and knows SP in the division.  Rockies need cheap SP.  We have that.  If we could swap Myers and add 2 or 3 controllable cheap SP pitchers is there any chance the Rockies do it.

Padres: LHH Blackmon (OPS 940)

Rockies: Morejon or Weathers, L or Q, Nix, and Myers

Pham + TG / Margot / Cordero + Blackmon = immediate 2020 production. Sorry had to edit, just imagining this OF and Mejia continuing to mash and grow, Tatis and Machado mashing, and Paddack / Lamet / Richards/ Davies / L / Q / Gore / Patino / Bolanos. I just named the entire roster pretty much hahahaha.

Or shed Myers (no way we can afford both) elsewhere and reduce the package, but I really like Blackmon, think he is a complete hitter. He has very few holes, has tough ABs, and is a professional (CO fan fav). In addition, he rakes against us. CO is in a salary quandary and may be quietly shopping him (FO says otherwise).

Sure would be nice to know who Preller considers a SP upgrade who is not a current free agent.
