Hader rolled a 2.6 WAR last year .. is young, controllable (3 years), and still low cost for an elite RP and LAD do need back end relief help

Having a hard time coming up with a package from the Padres to MILW that would basically help the in 2020 supplant that 2.6 WAR as MILW wants to continue to contend. Strahm (somewhat replaces Hader) ... Renfroe for LF (Braun to 1B) and his power would be awesome in Miller Park and would be a big defensive upgrade over Braun ... Strahm with a 1.1 WAR and Renfroe with a 2.6 WAR puts them in the game while not changing MILW's payroll much from Hader. Salary up for LAD / down for SD.
As core idea ... it does work for each team.
Since a) SD and MILW have just executed a trade Preller probably has a good sense of the other Padre pieces that may be coveted so b) such a deal is probably up to LAD and their view of Verdugo v. Hader.

My package included a controllable SP, a controllable RP, and controllable 1B or 3B. You think they need better pieces? Or is SD giving up too much for Verdugo?
If MIL did Strahm, France, and Baez that was 1.8 in WAR last year according to baseball reference, and both France and Baez have 5 years of control left, and Strahm has 3. So thats 13 years of control for 3 expensive years of Hader.

This may make Henry S happy. With Sale getting the thumbs up from Dr. Andrews to resume normal throwing activity, and that his arm may not fall off at the shoulder at least for a couple of years. Would you look into a deal around Sale/Myers now?

For MILW as a contender ... need something better now than France / Baez who are bets on the future to accept the downgrade to Strahm from Hader.
Maybe substituting Naylor (v France) and Quantrill (v Baez) might move them closer. Sort of a buyers view of all the pieces as to well help them the most now.
Padres would end up with even a bigger OF issue by adding Verdugo (LHH) who is a clear full time starter ... now backed into a corner on moving even more excess OF. Sort of why using Renfroe works for both sides considering Verdugo is > Renfroe offensively ... can play some CF ... cheaper / longer control. Until they can get rid of Myers ... he plays.

I get your point, just dont want to lose all of our RH power in the OF though. An OF of Renfroe/Margot-Grisham/Verdugo would play really nice in the big outfields of the NL West though.
I thought Naylor as well, but he really should be 1B only, and France at least offers some versatility with 3B/1B/ & 2B. Hate to send Quantrill away, but we are heavy in SP prospects and Verdugo takes care of a system deficiency for years.

I think Naylor will have more value going to the AL.

Maybe time to revisit a trade with Boston. They did tender Bradley a contract saying all the right things about his value .... however that leaves the estimated payroll at $228.6MM ... $20.6MM over the luxury tax limit (actually $0.6MM over the second threshold for even stronger penalties).
Hard to tell their real game plan on contending but if they want to contend ... they need to be even lower to allow for strategic adds. Meanwhile, they seem to be playing hard ball on deals ... on Betts ($27.7MM) they want to shed his total cost AND get some premium prospects for 1 year of Betts. Probably that mindset extended to the other big money options in Price, Sale, and Martinez who being moved (with their AAV) would achieve the reduction needed. Eovladi gets them close.
Maybe at this point they want to push for someone taking the contracts AND giving Boston back some quality prospect ... not adding to move the contract. Maybe something changes at the Winter Meetings.

Comforto/Benintendi/Mazara/Verdugo seem to be the type of LHH COF AJP is going after... The Kemp/Uprons older guys (2015) seem like such anti AJP moves now.. We know ownership had a mandate ...
