Trade ideas

by the way TODAY is non-tender deadline..should see some trade action

I am so pumped for next Monday.. Hank at the winter meetings ..breakfast at 6am at the Hilton.. Let's go!

Wouldn’t WASTE trade chips to get the differential improvement (assuming there is any real improvement) of Contreras over Mejia ... and am in the camp going forward Mejia will be as good or better (and cheaper under longer control). Consider the 2nd Half of 2019 when Mejia settled in getting regular playing time:

Mejia: 141 PA .... 127 wRC+ ... -0.1 dWAR ... 0.8 WAR

Contreras: 107 PA ... 91 wRC+ ... -0.1 dWAR ... 0.2 WAR

Bet the upside of Mejia since the separation is not all that great (actually Mejia was better) and save the trade chips to get some real improvement in the OF / 2B / SP.

Unless it becomes Mejia/Contreras over Mejia/Hedges.

But even thenm there are only so many Catcher AB's to go around.

I'd prefer Mejia to start 65+% of games with Hedges here for defense and the other 30%.

I would definitely not want to lose Mejia to add another offensive Catcher.

Makes little sense.

Mejia (switch hitter) has 5 years of control and the first two are at league minimum. Contreras (RHH) has only 3 control years and is already estimated to get $4.5MM in arbitration in 2020. So beyond the trade chips needed to get Contreras he will eat payroll space ... both trade chips and payroll space that should be use for more strategic upgrade needs.

Taking it from the CUBS standpoint .... $4.5MM and 3 years control is easy for them to keep him so IF they trade him it will only be for a major return (now ... trade deadline ... whenever). A lot of teams NEED a #1 catcher upgrade so the demand should keep his selling price high. Add that the CUBS are not shutting down their quest for the NL Central title in 2020 .... so expect IF he is moved the key return piece will be a quality ML SP or OF.

I am not a fan of making any moves at Catcher really other than giving Mejia the majority of AB's.

But many are at their breaking point with Hedges offense.

I'm hoping we improve enough elsewhere that we can keep the best defensive Catcher in baseball.

Esp when he's not just the best defensively ,you could say he is  "by far" the best Catcher.

With regard to the non-tender deadline, not expecting anyone to be non-tendered but outside chance on Perdomo and an even lesser chance on Garcia.  Both are relatively cheap options.  On the other hand, it would be great to keep the trade market action flowing even before the meetings in San Diego!

Well, this will open up team's rosters, so possible it spurs something that's just been waiting for the roster space before being done?

For a good trade ... no team has a roster space issue ... easy to just DFA the next lowest name if the team is adding more than giving up.

This is just a headline leading to a wonder. MIL will listen to offers on Hader, LAD need bullpen help, SD needs another LHH OFer, MIL needs a 3B/1B and another SP, and with the loss of Hader bullpen help.

SD gets Verdugo, MIL gets Strahm or Perdomo, France or Naylor, and Bolanos or Baez, and LAD gets Hader.
