Although Grisham may be an excellent prospect for the future ... not sure that in 2020 he is someone to rely on for improvement if they want to contend. Did a next level look at his 2019:

Totals: Grisham (156 AB) 231/328/410 vs. Margot (234 AB) 234/304/387

v. RHP: Grisham 234/333/411 vs. Margot 200/260/359

While I agree that Grisham should not be the end of our OF upgrades, and I dont think he is. I dont think it is fair to compare the first 150 ABs of Grisham's ML career and the 2019 of Margot who is now a 3 year experienced ML player.

Yes.

Plus it’s been said that Grisham made a change to his swing/approach and has hit ever since.

Albeit a short period but if he’s “figured something out”,much like Pomeranz,we may have done well. But if not...in both cases,AJ will feel even more pressure.

Not judging his "potential" for the future ... just using his performance / splits to suggest that the Padres should NOT RELY on Grisham to provide a major offensive upgrade in 2020. They need more proven upgrades and at this point have to keep Margot as the insurance policy if they want to improve.

AJ has lost me this offseason. I have no idea what he is doing anymore. We have a ton of backup OF. Is Grisham just another one? I have to think that AJ believes he is the final solution at 1 OF position. CF? LF? Who knows. Ask AJ. That leaves MAYBE 1 space available in the OF, and then only if we trade someone(Myers). Is AJ SURE that he can trade Myers? Or is this our starting OF for next year? We spent $9 million on a reliever. Great, we solved a problem that wasn't a problem. Does that mean we have a ton of money to spend? If not, we have A LOT of trades to make. Will AJ be desperate and susceptible to robbery? What are you doing AJ? I am lost.

While the Pomeranz contract is 4 for 34, it is only $4M this season. The $8M singing bonus doesnt kick in until at least after the season, and spread out until 2023.

Lets say Grisham, for 2020, is the LHH platoon in CF until we find out who he is. So between Margot and Grisham CF is set for about $2.7M.

RF is based on who Renfroe is, 1st half or 2nd half. IF he is 1st half guy, does he need to be platooned? If he is the 2nd half, he needs to be cut from the team. Im sure that he is somewhere in the middle, and needs to be platooned against most RHPs.

LF, I think they still have the money to sign Dickerson, even if they dont trade Myers for some or all his salary. And would have about $4M still left for something else.

Yes, we would still need 2B, but maybe AJP is planning on France and Garcia until he can shed all or most of Myers salary.

So maybe, worst case scenario is Myers in LF (hope for bounce back), Grisham/Margot in CF, and Dickerson/Renfroe in RF. While they may not put us in contention this year, unless Myers pulls his head out of you know where, it should be an OF that can keep us around .500 for 2020 and let us know what we need to do next offseason, when Oliveras and Kinsler are off the books.

let me shed some light BP WAS A HUGE PROBLEM in 2019-- Worst BP in Padre History,,, a high leverage arm to go with Yates was a Must... With Pomz, and the up and comers Munoz/Baez/Castillo back as well as Strahm in the BP from the get go-- BP is back to a strength..

Moving to SP for 2020. Middle of the road in 2020, rotation was missing a TOR and some depth-- With Richards healthy, Lamet healthy, Paddack out of inning Limits, Joey and Davies on the fold and the rest of the depth behind them, the days of Mitchell/Perdomo/Allen/Nix/Kennedy and Vicious seeing any starts as Padres are over, all of them started at some point or other in 2019.... Now Q/Bolanos/Baez/Morejon/Gore/Patino are our choices to start should the need/s arise-- SP Fixed.. (still would like a TOR for a Quantum leap here) but SP in much better shape from 1 to 10...

RF- Renfroe/Naylor the same for now///// LF Meyers/Naylor the same for now -- a healthy Franchy could improve both..

CF OPS .687 in 2019 (all CF starters combined)... Grisham (vs RHP) + Margot (vs LHP) should be .770 + a HUGE improvement.. and there is even more upside for the young Grisham here and Margot...

IF = Same to Improved with more Power from France/Quiroz/Kinsler/Garcia than from Urias and for the most part the same casr

C= was Hedges/Mejia... and Moves to Mejia/Hedges at the moment-- hitting wise the 2019 version was horrific(.627 OPS the reversed version for 2020 (Mejia .855 OPS as starter 2nd half).... so just with the role reversal this unit should be leaps and bounds better (offensively) vs 2019

So to me clear upgrades can be made to COF (one or both), 2B is passible as is until Edwards/Miller/Quiroz or Arias show they are ready to claim it... C could use a more balanced starter (Contreras) but we are in decent shape with Mr O and Mr D sharing duties there if an upgrade cant occur

Obviously the elusive TOR

Those are the obvious needs/wants moving foward in the offseason... Out of the current players unloading Myers would seem a no-brainer but got to look at the pros and cons of doing so COST WISE to us (prospects or currency) before 100% moving foward on it...

Santa has the list, he is checking it twice , we supported 2019 squad, so we are nice.. time to unwrap some presents, some wont be needs, some will but as long as our collection of toys is >(better than before) by the end of the offseason is all we can ask for-- LETS GO! AJP (aka Santa)

Or maybe we should check the calendar. Its December 1st not April 1st.  Padres have publicly stated more moves are in store.  There is no reason to gnash our teeth as though the moves of 11/27 are the moves of import before next year. I'm pretty sure AJ's big moves are still in the offing.

Still a lot of time for action ... have not even gone through the winter meetings.

Has there been any trades beyond the Lauer/Grisham for Davies/Urias deal other than some minor housecleaning stuff?

Need two parties to make a trade and sellers are still feeling out other buyers while buyers are looking at alternatives they might go after if the seller of the prime target goes with a better deal elsewhere. Probably a lot of phone calls suggesting names going in play then a lot of back room work by each team getting better evaluation of those component players before both sides can settle on a deal.

Maybe the MILW deal happened early because Preller knew the where no other teams interested in dealing for Lauer / Urias, his valuation was not that high, MILW was motivated to secure a SS, and were willing to give up something Preller wanted.

If Preller is in the hunt for bigger fish (Conforto, Marte, Benintendi, Merrifield, and the like) he probably is not alone and the seller is working for the best offer ... not the first one. Conversely, if Preller is willing to trade a player desired by more than one other team (e.g. Hedges, Renfroe, Lucchesi, etc.) he is doing the same thing.

Winter meeting gets all the GM together which makes closing deals (sorting through the alternatives) more efficient and at the same time maybe a better understanding of where the FA market options sit.

Expect more to come is a good bet ... and a good chance something we have not suggested ... although by the end of the winter meetings we will have probably suggest everything.

I am a little surprised AJP and the Indians didn't work out a blockbuster with Urias, top prospect + ML players for Lindor + Kluber.

As stated before, I do like the Brew trade and agree that it is sneaky good. Not sure if Lindor + Tatis is redundant and would generate diminishing returns, but sure sounds sexy. Kluber basically replaces Davies.

Winter meetings will produce trades. I really wonder if holding onto Urias until the meetings would have maximized our return.
