Trade ideas
Quote from MrPadre19 on November 25, 2019, 6:24 pmQuote from Commie on November 25, 2019, 5:30 pmWould any who are really "under the radar" be an upgrade? I bet if you gave any GM a choice of any of those guys vs Margot, its Manny every time. Even as a platoon, why would they give those guys more ABs than Manny?
As a depth acquisition I'd be all for any of them. Just thought the idea was to get a player who can upgrade the position substantially. Most UR guy I can think of would be Mallex, but he's not really UR. JBJ continues to look like perfect fit. With he and Mallex the odds of a good year in a semi starting role are way better than fringe guys mentioned.
These under the radar guys aren’t for an everyday starter position.
We still need a Benintendi or a Haniger.
These would be more of a replacement for Martini with a chance of becoming much more.

Vs. RHP=Mallex Smith- .213/.283/.331
Manuel Margot-.200/.260/.359
They both hit LHP better so no platoon advantage. Defense is comparable. Margot has more power, Smith more speed. No point in trading for him.
JBJ is performing well below his $11.5 million salary. His defense is slipping and his offense will be almost as bad as Margot. We don't need to spend $11.5 million and trade players to get just a small upgrade.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 25, 2019, 7:00 pmThe only way I would trade for JBJ is if BOS took Kinsler back in trade, and maybe some cash coming from BOS to SD. Then I would add a lower tiered prospect in the Nix or Mason Thompson range.

Quote from TatisJr on November 25, 2019, 7:10 pmI think Boston would just non tender him. JBJ isn’t a bad player and he would make a nice platoon partner with Margot, just not at that 11 million dollar price tag.

I think that they very well could non tender JBJ, and then anybody can sign him as basically a FA. And I agree that $11M is way too much for what he offers. Which is why I suggested a prospect going back to BOS, kind of like the Headley/Mitchell trade. So it would have to be someone the new GM (coming from the TAM mindset) would have to believe in, might go as high as a Lawson type prospect, but not any higher than that.

Quote from fenn68 on November 25, 2019, 9:08 pmRemember Boston needs to drop about $30MM to comfortably be under the luxury tax level ... that is why the non-tender makes sense eliminating all the $11MM but they still would need to do a lot more.
Can’t see them taking any salary back or taking a bad contract ... they are focused on salary reduction.
Note that Bradley’s defense slipped noticeably in 2019 .... under Margot levels but think both were ... defensively ... still among the better CF. There are not a lot of great CF.
They can avoid that issue with moving (at full contract) either Betts, Sale, or Price which would probably require a minimal return to get someone to take all the contracts.
Bottom line Boston is in a bad position and looks to be making the best bad deal they can. Don’t envy their GM who will get ripped by the Boston media no matter which path he takes.

The concept of Kinsler take back makes sense; but not with this player/amount of $. Possibility with one of the larger "Price" contracts 🙂

Quote from fenn68 on November 26, 2019, 6:36 amDid a quick look and Boston needs to drop about $25MM as a minimum ... probably a bit more for “cushion” for player shuffling in 2020. An important point that Boston does not have an issue in 2021 with the departures of Betts and Bradley as FA.
The key may be the non-tender of Bradley avoiding about $11MM. That gives them some room to take some money back on the contracts of Sale or Price ... not sure how that works on Betts (and arb).
Non-tender Bradley and trade Betts (with about $10MM) might at least get a nice return piece. Trading Sale or Price with their long term contracts will require Boston to eat more money over the life of their contracts.
Sale (30): $30-30-30-27.5-27.5MM
Price (34): $32-32-32MM
Not sure either would get those deals if they were on the market as FA and even if they could would any team take those contracts AND give up talent to get them.
Not easy for the Boston GM.

Non tender JBJ.. Trade Price + Benintendi to SDP for Myers ++++ = Under.. Pads pick up their LHH and their 2nd SP... For a net +$16mil can maybe move Kinsler + Hedges + Lucchesi + Perdomo in other deals to lower that +$16 to around +$2... Allowing them to sign Ryu

That would work for Boston in 2020 and, I guess, give them some flexibility to pursue Betts in FA for 2021+. However, if they did not get Betts to sign for 2021 they would be without Benintendi, Bradley, Betts, and at that point Martinez likely to opt out as his salary drops to under $20MM. Of course he would have a lot of payroll flexibility ... just no OF except Myers. Oh joy!
Padres would go up $16MM+/- and that could be an issue (think that would put them in the $140-150 range).
Ryu is estimated to sign for $54MM/3 years (AAV $18MM) and with Machado, Machado, and Price locked in with their cash flow and some larger arb decisions arriving in around year 3 (Tatis, Paddack, Lamet, Mejia) pushing Ryu's money out does not work.
Contracts that might be traded: Renfroe ($3.7MM); Kinsler ($3.75MM); Hedges ($2.9MM); Margot ($2.1MM) then getting to the small stuff. Kept out Yates ($6.5MM) thinking they would not pursue the two arms and not keep the elite closer.
Seems like a Price/Benitendi v Ryu/Myers call with the payroll coming out about the same and in both cases needing to move some other contracts to create payroll room for other adds.
