Trade ideas

Is Matt Kelly really this stupid? He expects us to trade Kirby Yates to the Red Sox for the privilege of taking on Price's horrific contract and destroying our payroll and ability to add any free agent for the next 3 years? Do these guys even bother to think before they start writing?

https://www.mlb.com/news/5-reliever-trade-candidates-for-2019-20-offseason

Is he a Red Sox fan or just east coast focused? Clearly does not understand.

Since the Padres left Gettys unprotected last winter and he was not selected and now have left him unprotected again should tell us enough about his ML viability.

If no team selects him again that should convince us that his ML projection is zero. IF by some chance someone thinks he has a chance ... they should select him in the Rule 5 after all he has been in AAA.

Better chance the Padres convert him to a RP with his strong arm (see Belen and Guerra) and he closes for the Padres after the trade deadline ....:)

=====

Add that I would not trade Margot UNLESS there was a high quality full time CF replacement in place. So if the Padres pulled of a Marte trade with Pitt ...

Any interest in RP Nick Goody? Released by Cleveland  28 pretty good last year, 3.54 era 1.28 whip 50 is in 40 innings. Could replace Stammen if he's not resigned.  Looks to be healthy after injuries in 2018.

Nice catch!   A little surprising.  Projected arb a little > 1 MM I think?  This is where it hurts to have our roster SO tight...  maybe?

Preach Dusty! I’ll be surprised if Gettys gets much time in the bigs and I don’t see it coming with the Padres. I don’t think Gettys is a top 10 OF within the Padres organization. He’s a tools guy, stud athlete, but he Ks way too much. I don’t think Margot is a great player or anything, but I’m blown away by how little he is valued by Padres fans. Is Margot the All Star he was supposed to be? No, but he’s also not a trash player. His defense and ownership of lefties alone is a bargain at only 2.1 mill. Get a Trent Grisham from the Brewers and you got yourself an awesome LH-RH CF combo at a cheap price for 2020 and years to come.

Look, I am not saying Margot is trash or that he doesnt have value, and yes he is affordable at $2.1M. What I am saying is that with Trammell on his way, I dont think Margot is the long term option in SD. So since we only need a place holder for a season or season and a half at most, and if I can get a Conforto/Benintendi/Marte and that team wants Margot, I am not going to say no. Yes, Gettys has not reached his ceiling and may never, but I could live with giving him a chance in 2020, especially since I dont think Gettys defense/speed is that inferior to that of Margots. Especially for the opportunity of having the better corner bat in Conforto or Benintendi or Marte, where we dont seem to have that guy close in our system.

If SD can get one of those three guys; without giving them Margot, great! Find the other player that is going to play against RHP in CF, and we can then deal with Margot v Trammell when Trammell is ready.

Don’t understand Cleveland’s thinking on this one ... considering the kept a journeyman  32 fringe INF on the 40 man.

If nothing else, should have been able to deal him for something useful given the ML need for RP ... his ERA was fine and his BAA was good.

Now as a FA, he actually may make out better than his ARB projection given supply and demand dynamics. Would expect some team to give him a ML deal.

Would be a useful signing for the Padres for some veteran presence in the pen ... if he is still on the FA market after the Padres open some spots after some multiple for one deals ... could fit.

Maybe Cleveland knows something that others don’t on him.

Sorry Booster, I wasn’t trying to put words in your mouth about Margot. It was more of a generalization about fans feelings of Margot. I just think he is undervalued by the fan base and here because he hasn’t lived up to All Star type expectations. I think he’s a very useful player and in a ballpark where his skill set is needed. Perhaps Olivares becomes Margots replacement, but I just haven’t seen where Gettys can be that guy. I have TT as LF in 2021 and being the Padres version of Carl Crawford.

I agree that Olivares is the one to watch ... maybe not to begin the season in 2020 with the Padres but could be a factor by mid-season. Will be only 24 next season ... plays all three OF spots ... has some OBP/SLG skills with base running skills. Relatively low K%.

Basically the potential for that all around 4th OF and maybe more.

2019 a full season in AA ... maybe a 1/2 a 2020 season in AAA will set him for a ML promotion. Actually would think Olivares would be a better option than Gettys if forced to have one to start the season with the Padres (but would prefer to start 2020 with neither).

All of the Sudden Brewers need a Catcher badly... Wonder if they come for Allen? or bigger Hedges? I know a 3 way with Cubs likely unlikely (division and all).. Where Contreras comes to SD, Hedges to Brewers and Cubs promote their top C propspect-- or keep Hedges and trade the prospect to Brewers.. or MEts with Ramos/Hedges/Comforto each going to a different destination.. hmmm

Hopefully the TB version.

Had seen scouting reports before the trade that projected Trammell as a LF (arm I think) but not clear on his defensive skills (reads, routes) ... clearly he has the speed.

Unless the Padres come up with a real plus option in CF .... Trammell may be the 2021 CF  by default especially if the Padres add an upgrade corner OF and / or they still have a couple from Myers, Renfroe, Naylor, Cordero with Olivares being the wild card.

Still, he does have to show he can hit over a full minor league season ... potential is there but we still need to see the production.
