Trade ideas

I do agree that Margot's likely career in MLB is as a short side platoon CF & defensive replacement.  His terrible splits vs RHP just don't suggest he will become a solid "1st division" starting CF.

At this point with the # of career Minors AB's Gettys has had without overcoming his K/contact issues, there is no way to argue he will ever become anything BUT a 5th OF/strict platoon guy.   But in the early part of last year when Margot was badly struggling, I floated the same idea....

.... However, there's a better option:  Our most overlooked prospect & 40-man roster guy Edward Olivares.  All he did last year was:    .283 / .349 / .453  45 XBH (17 HR) & 35 SB in 488 AB @ AA.  Overall profile may not be "star starter", but floor of MLB 4th OF (60 Arm & Run) capable of all 3 positions looks like a lock.    He could easily be on the O.D. roster depending what the Pads do with their 3 RH OF... even if Margot is still there.

Prediction:  By mid 2020 or O.D. 2021 at latest, Trammell & Olivares have CF locked down.  Margot traded.  Just not sure it happens yet.   Gettys would be an atypical Rule 5 selection, having already been eligible last year & not selected due to the weak hit/contact tool, but the roster expansion to 26 could make him attractive esp to an AL team in that limited role as a "4-tool" guy.

Yates was the best relief pitcher in baseball last year! It sounds like his family loves San Diego and he wants to stay with the Padres. Offer him a 2 for 20 or 3 for 24 type extension and have Kirby there as an example for the Padres young talented relievers. I understand the Padres are loaded with young arms coming in and I do think Munoz/Baez/Strahm/Castillo would be fine without Yates. However, Yates doesn’t force the young guys into the closer role and they can watch and learn from the best in the business. Kirby has established himself as a lights out closer and he’s an important voice in the clubhouse. All that and you likely get him at a discounted rate for what he brings to the table. I don’t think dealing Kirby would make the vets like Hosmer and Machado very happy either. Tough for AJP and ownership to sell they are marching towards the playoffs while dealing away the games top closer.

Plus you can extend him and "still" trade him if it comes to that.

What were Gettys numbers against LH pitching?

Olivares?

I would have no problem replacing Margot with Gettys if it's only part of a platoon and as long as including Margot in a deal makes us better elsewhere.

I'm sure AJ is considering Gettys and Olivares in any scenario where trading Margot comes up.

2019 in AAA Gettys split v LHP was .260/.342 with an 878 OPS. Now the power Im sure was due in part to El Paso and the ML ball being introduced, but the OBP of .342 should transfer some what to the MLs. And his last 90 days in AAA was .400/.455 against all pitching with a 1.121 OPS.

Good question.  It looks like Margot is a better "vs LHP" platoon option....

Olivares has shown modest reverse splits the last 2 years:  BA -20 pts & Slug -65 on Avg.  OBP improved from -50 in '18 to = in '19

Gettys was nominally better vs LHP 2 years ago, but much worse reverse split last yr:  -30 BA/OBP, -135 pts Slug

Takeaway to me is:  increases value of Olivares as a 4th OF since actually better vs RHP.  Decreases value of Gettys overall b/c doesn't appear to fit the niche of even a platooner, so hard to match up to "mask" the exteme K/contact issues

On one hand the last thing we need right now is someone that K's at the level Gettys does.

But...IF in a platoon situation he can get on base at a .340 clip I'd take it.

Especially if the LH option, who will get 65-70 % of the AB's,is doing the same or better.

While we need to cut down on the swing and miss....we even moreso need to increase the obp on this offense.

Can’t really understand the idea of trading Margot without a contingency plan and I’m sorry but you guys are insane if you think Getty’s is an option in even a platoon role at this point. If the organization even was going to remotely entertain the idea he is an option, he would have been protected. Reality is, they don’t think enough of him to consider him for a centerfield role this year. Does another organization? Maybe but not the Padres. Also, I think trading for a Jon Gray or another solid rotation arm that will require our young controllable pitching is going to be contingent on them reaching a deal for a cole or Stras (unlikely unless Myers is dealt to rid of his contract) or a Wheeler or Bumgarner (more likely). Gotta find a solid centerfielder first before moving/entertaining moving Margot

Preach Dusty! I’ll be surprised if Gettys gets much time in the bigs and I don’t see it coming with the Padres. I don’t think Gettys is a top 10 OF within the Padres organization. He’s a tools guy, stud athlete, but he Ks way too much. I don’t think Margot is a great player or anything, but I’m blown away by how little he is valued by Padres fans. Is Margot the All Star he was supposed to be? No, but he’s also not a trash player. His defense and ownership of lefties alone is a bargain at only 2.1 mill. Get a Trent Grisham from the Brewers and you got yourself an awesome LH-RH CF combo at a cheap price for 2020 and years to come.

Are we competing for a playoff spot in 2020 or not? Are we trading prospects for proven major leaguers or are we relying on low level prospects to perform? We cannot trade our only reliable centerfielder without already having a replacement on the roster. If we do get a replacement, it is going to be Olivares who comes up as a defensive replacement. Our 40-man roster spots are as valuable as gold right now aren't they? Olivares is already on it, Gettys is not. Gettys had one halfway decent year. That is all. Shall we compare Gettys career year to Margot's career minor league numbers? Margot averaged .25 points higher BA, .10 points higher OBP, twice the stolen base rate and half the strikeout rate of Gettys career best year. Do you want to see those numbers at the ml level next year?

Is Matt Kelly really this stupid? He expects us to trade Kirby Yates to the Red Sox for the privilege of taking on Price's horrific contract and destroying our payroll and ability to add any free agent for the next 3 years? Do these guys even bother to think before they start writing?
