Well Commie, if you do that trade SD takes on $8.25M in salary in 2020. Then in 2021 and 2022 we have an extra $9.5M each year. So that means we are taking in a total of $28.25M in salary to get rid of Myers. That seams a bit ouch to me unless you really think that Price can bounce back in SD.

We are trying to compete. David Price does not help us do that. Management is not going to trade one bad contract for another. When/if we trade Myers it is going to be to get rid of his contract, to save some money to spend on somebody we actually want. AJ does not want another seriously overpaid, underperforming player. If he does that it is a desperation move and it means he has given up on competing in 2020.

First of all, that does not get them under the 2020 luxury tax threshold by my quick calculation. Going forward, still not the payroll space to resign Betts (who by all accounts will go FA after next season for BIG money). Add that Bradley will go FA after 2020 ... so in one deal Boston would wipe out its offense by 2021.

Plus Bogarts is already their SS of the present and future being under control longer that Tatis would be ... and a proven commodity vs still risk that Tatis may level out at a point somewhat less than his debut season offensively and defensive < Bogarts.

Frankly Boston would be better off just DFA Bradley and trade Betts .... gone as FA after the season and drop $10-15MM under the tax level which they can use to supplement the created OF holes.

Now to make it simpler .... why not just trade Martinez to get close to the limit? IF (a big if) the Padres wanted his bat and could live with his defense in LF .... Boston might listen ... probably with league minimums in return. So, something around Naylor and Lucchesi off the ML roster with the Padres taking the full Martinez contract. (Note: if he did not opt out this year ... as he gets older even less likely.)
