Quote from fenn68 on November 4, 2019, 4:42 pmThis should be interesting ... JD Martinez chooses NOT to opt out ... apparently not a big market for DH only types even in the AL.
New GM will have his hands full to drop about $27MM in AAV to get under the luxury tax level. Betts may well be out there for anyone that takes all the salary .... Price ... Sale have to be in play ... and, although not enough be himself, Bradley at $11 is on shaky ground.
This one move by Martinez may cause the unthinkable in BOST and we will see a rebuild phase with no depth in the farm system .... Betts / Bradley FA after 2020 ... might as well do some house cleaning if they can with the big arms ... add in Evoldi into the mix.

Would you do Myers, Kinsler (release by BOS after deal) and Hector Olivara's contract for Price and JBJ? Straight platoon latter with Margot.

Well Commie, if you do that trade SD takes on $8.25M in salary in 2020. Then in 2021 and 2022 we have an extra $9.5M each year. So that means we are taking in a total of $28.25M in salary to get rid of Myers. That seams a bit ouch to me unless you really think that Price can bounce back in SD.

We are trying to compete. David Price does not help us do that. Management is not going to trade one bad contract for another. When/if we trade Myers it is going to be to get rid of his contract, to save some money to spend on somebody we actually want. AJ does not want another seriously overpaid, underperforming player. If he does that it is a desperation move and it means he has given up on competing in 2020.

Quote from TatisJr on November 4, 2019, 7:35 pmI doubt AJP goes anywhere near that Price contract. He might have some decent innings left in him, but I’d rather just keep Wil and hope he hits. Price would be adding significant money that could go to other areas.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 5, 2019, 5:19 amThis post will be sacrilege, and I am sure I will get slaughtered for even suggesting this, but here it goes. This comes from the start of the conversation I heard this morning on XM radio.
Trade Myers, Tatis, and Kinsler to BOS for JDM, Xander Bogaerts, and $10M/ year in cash from BOS for 3 years.
Bogaerts and Tatis are similar bats, except Bogaerts has done it longer and is under contract through 2026 with a vesting option. JDM is a much better bat, and AZ had him LF and made it to the playoffs that year. Plus he has an opt out after 2020 and 2021.
BOS saves $9M this year, has their SS of the futre, and then has a chance to keep Betts.
SD gets better LF production with JDM, no drop in SS with X, and still has $19M for FA signings if they go to $150M. Get creative with a ramp up of dollars, and still sign Stras.

Quote from fenn68 on November 5, 2019, 7:39 amNot sure that was a Boston fan suggesting that.
First of all, that does not get them under the 2020 luxury tax threshold by my quick calculation. Going forward, still not the payroll space to resign Betts (who by all accounts will go FA after next season for BIG money). Add that Bradley will go FA after 2020 ... so in one deal Boston would wipe out its offense by 2021.
Plus Bogarts is already their SS of the present and future being under control longer that Tatis would be ... and a proven commodity vs still risk that Tatis may level out at a point somewhat less than his debut season offensively and defensive < Bogarts.
Frankly Boston would be better off just DFA Bradley and trade Betts .... gone as FA after the season and drop $10-15MM under the tax level which they can use to supplement the created OF holes.
====
Now to make it simpler .... why not just trade Martinez to get close to the limit? IF (a big if) the Padres wanted his bat and could live with his defense in LF .... Boston might listen ... probably with league minimums in return. So, something around Naylor and Lucchesi off the ML roster with the Padres taking the full Martinez contract. (Note: if he did not opt out this year ... as he gets older even less likely.)

Booster, I won’t slaughter you for this trade idea... I’ll just assume you didn’t have your coffee yet. 😜

Quote from TatisJr on November 5, 2019, 8:57 amMy wild idea was a deal involving Myers, Hedges, 2 young arms to NYY for Stanton and Yanks pay half of his final 4 years or send a yearly amount to help with his huge deal.

Thanks for the kindness, because of your screen name, you were one of the ones that I was thinking about when suggesting this weird scenario.
