No way AJ gives up what it would take for one season that isn't absolutely expected to be a playoff season.

I know they will say they expect to be in the playoffs next year...but their actions....like not making a trade like this....will show that isn't their true expectation.

IF Martinez opts out BOST drops to only $4.7MM over the luxury tax threshold which they can manage with a couple of non-tenders (or trade / non-tender of Bradley expecting $11MM in arbitration). Bradley is also a FA after the season and $11MM is a lot to pay for his productivity .... no need to deal Betts for anything less than at a premium.

If Martinez chooses to stay ... Betts comes more into play since he alone would drop them under the luxury tax threshold (just barely) .. but they can’t take on any more salary in the process.

I my mind the value of Betts to the 2020 Padres non-existent compared to the better use of the $27.7MM and prospects traded in getting multiple, longer term asset that will help them win when the are truly contenders.

Now that makes more sense ... an elite to take them over the top if they are in clear contention.

I seriously doubt they will ever sell him cheap. Some team that thinks that thinks he is all they need to win the WS will still drive up the price. Somebody will overpay for him when they are desperate.

On another topic, where does everyone think our money should go this winter? Pay for an ACE and trade for offense or do it the other way around? One or two big name guys or several smaller upgrades? I know Henry wants offensive stars. How about the rest of you?

Important not to use all the ammo (payroll space / trade chips) for just “OK” because they may be needed next winter if better options become available.

IMO there are no SPs that are close to Cole or Strasburg in ability via trade. So I would spend the cash on either one. Maybe leaning towards Stras since you might only have to invest 5 or 6 years, versus 7 or more for Cole.

Then I would use our prospect "cash" for the right OFer. I dont think that is Betts due to contract length(too short). My trade targets would be in no order, Marte, Bennitendi, Mazara, and maybe Pederson from LA. There are probably one or two that I am drawing a blank on at the moment.
