Quote from BoosterSD on November 4, 2019, 8:20 amWhile the final prospects are obviously debatable, Im sure it starts with Patino or Gore. Where is goes from there, who knows. Even still, Morejon and Quantrill for one year of Betts is harsh since the dollars for Betts would kill our 2020 budget and probably prevent us from having a chance at Stras.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 4, 2019, 11:06 amMorejon/Quantrill/Naylor I could live with.
But nothing that involves Gore,Patino,Abrams,Edwards or Campusano IMO.
Also,I really don't want to trade for "anyone" that we don't at least expect to possibly have into 2022-23
I don't think Betts is even a possibility because 2020 is not a win at all costs season.
No way AJ gives up what it would take for one season that isn't absolutely expected to be a playoff season.
I know they will say they expect to be in the playoffs next year...but their actions....like not making a trade like this....will show that isn't their true expectation.

Quote from fenn68 on November 4, 2019, 11:47 amIf all the Padres did is add Betts to this roster .... they would still likely be sub-500 while paying the estimated $27.7 arbitration and giving up prospects only to see him walk to FA next winter. (Where he will get a contract greater than Machado / Harper).
If the Padres have that money to deploy ... either aim it a Strasburg or Cole on long term deals OR divide it up and get multiple OF upgrades.
=====
We should know more pretty soon ... and Betts future is probably linked to Martinez. IF Martinez opts out BOST drops to only $4.7MM over the luxury tax threshold which they can manage with a couple of non-tenders (or trade / non-tender of Bradley expecting $11MM in arbitration). Bradley is also a FA after the season and $11MM is a lot to pay for his productivity .... no need to deal Betts for anything less than at a premium.
If Martinez chooses to stay ... Betts comes more into play since he alone would drop them under the luxury tax threshold (just barely) .. but they can’t take on any more salary in the process.
====
I my mind the value of Betts to the 2020 Padres non-existent compared to the better use of the $27.7MM and prospects traded in getting multiple, longer term asset that will help them win when the are truly contenders.

In all honesty ..lets say we added Stras and Dickerson and we were say 55-40 at the deadline .. Betts expiring for a Machado to LAD type of return ie nowhere close to what you guys are talking about here.. Would make sense on a goingbfor it deadline move

Now that makes more sense ... an elite to take them over the top if they are in clear contention.

I seriously doubt they will ever sell him cheap. Some team that thinks that thinks he is all they need to win the WS will still drive up the price. Somebody will overpay for him when they are desperate.
On another topic, where does everyone think our money should go this winter? Pay for an ACE and trade for offense or do it the other way around? One or two big name guys or several smaller upgrades? I know Henry wants offensive stars. How about the rest of you?

Quote from fenn68 on November 4, 2019, 1:18 pmAt this point in the Padres roster .... short of contention in both pitching and OF (offense). So, first the adds would be longer term control allowing for the internal blue chip pieces to merge in and become productive (Trammell, Gore, Patino, et al) ... minimum of 2-3 years control on the new add.
Second, IF there were a legit elite piece to pursue that fit the Padres needs (e.g. Strasburg or Cole for SP or .... not sure of any elite OF sitting as a FA) that would be a priority. I am referring to a projectable future All-Star not some FA cling to his past.
So based on may first and second thoughts .... likely go for multiple upgrades using both trades and FA to elevate the roster in 2020 setting the stage for 2021-22. In that case would probably focus on OF since other than Trammell nothing blue chip in the system on the horizon while pitching will be boosted by a host of blue chip prospects. Fill the needs for the next 2-5 years.
Important not to use all the ammo (payroll space / trade chips) for just “OK” because they may be needed next winter if better options become available.

IMO there are no SPs that are close to Cole or Strasburg in ability via trade. So I would spend the cash on either one. Maybe leaning towards Stras since you might only have to invest 5 or 6 years, versus 7 or more for Cole.
Then I would use our prospect "cash" for the right OFer. I dont think that is Betts due to contract length(too short). My trade targets would be in no order, Marte, Bennitendi, Mazara, and maybe Pederson from LA. There are probably one or two that I am drawing a blank on at the moment.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 4, 2019, 1:44 pmHow about a way out of the box transaction between NYY and SD. Despite having all the cash in the world, Baby Steinbrenner seems to want to keep the purse strings closed and stay under the luxury tax. Judge is going to come due for some big cash soon. And they were desperately short on SP this season, overcame it with big offense. I wonder if something around a Stanton for Myers/Hosmer?/Luchessi trade would make sense? Obviously there would need to be some cash coming to SD, and I know Stanton was hurt last year, but what a bat. And IMO he seemed to do better when playing in MIA because I think he likes playing the OF. Plus, Stanton can opt out after the 2020 season. Doubt he will, but has the option.
Totally crazy? 🙂

Quote from JasonE135 on November 4, 2019, 2:41 pmAs much as I would like to see Dickerson come to SD, and I think he would bring tremendous value with him, I have to say Strasburg. If he is sane. Many people think that he will just want to beat his former contract. I am a little afraid that he will want a contract in the Cole range. If Price got over $200 million, why shouldn't he? On the other hand if we can afford him I think he is perfect for us. If not, we should sign offense. We can get smaller upgrades there, so probably more than 1. I think just 1 or 2 quality LHH bats in the OF can do wonders for us. I too see no true ACEs on the trade market.
