Quote from JasonE135 on October 29, 2019, 12:20 pmIt is useless to try to throw Myers in to any of these complex trades. The extra $20 million we would be throwing in will pay for 1 year of Myers. With another 2 years and just over $40 million left on his contract, he still has negative value for the Astros. They wouldn't want him. He would be a deal killer by himself. Besides which Springer is right there with Bregman and Altuve with icon status with that fan base. We are not getting him without giving them a star like Tatis.

Quote from BoosterSD on October 29, 2019, 1:35 pmThe real problem with Myers is he has no role with a team at this point. Part of the reason SD signed him this deal, was he was supposed to be "The Face of the Franchise" and the leader of the clubhouse for the hot lava of talent coming to SD in the last few years. He is neither at this point. Add to those points, he does not contribute near enough with his bat to earn his contract. So he has no value to a playoff level team because his offensive contributions dont equal his money he is earning. And he has no value to a rebuilding team because he is not a Hosmer clubhouse guy.
As much as I (and Fowler) would like to see him move onto another team, it will have to be with a lot of money and young prospects to make a team take a player that should be earning what he did last year, around $5.5M a year, and get basically nothing in return.
I think the best hope now, is to leave him in LF and hope the new manager can make him feel all Tingly inside and hope for a bounce back. We can sign Akiyama to platoon with Margot in CF, and Renfroe in RF based on match ups, with the hope that Renfroe was more 1st half than 2nd half from last year.

Alvarez 22 is a young stud and virtually (untouchable)
Brantley 33 a career .792 OPS with BA/OBP skills and lefty bat we sorely miss -- 50/50 possibility he is available--older and 1 yr control probably make him more valuable to the Stros vs return on trade
Reddick 33 career OPS .753.. lefty bat yes BUT not sure he moves the neddle at all and with Myers (.763) and Renfroe (.788) we would actually be playing a "lesser" bat.. NO THANKS
Misiarick (spelling) 29 .660 OPS.. for all the negativity we fling towards Margot (.695) he is better and would even be better in Houston vs him... NO THANKS
which leads us to Tucker (.652 small sample size) 23... Top prospect with huge ceiling if Astros win WS they might want to take a small step back -- give Tucker the starting job and remain very competitive (-Cole, + McCullers) just not as dominant as 2019
and then there is SPRINGER 31 .849 OPS an elite OF with 1 yr of control left who is likely let go at age 32 and with Big $$ implications.. as is and entering arb 3 with a pricetag around $20 mil...
Springer is perhaps the one bat that would elevate our offense while possibly giving us multiple yrs (extension) of quality baseball
So Myers (same $$ as Springer in 2020) similar Power (especially in Houston), Speed .. obviously OBP/Avg and Defense a big step down .. But Tucker assuming Springers position actually improves D
Proposed coontinue winning now and future .. (assuming Springer agrees to a 3yr extension -so 4 yrs $120 mil or so)
Myers + $20 mil + Naylor (Gurriel is 35 and either Myers or Naylor can slip into 1b in a yr) + Lucchesi (no where near Cole-- but Lucchesi + McCullers make loss of Cole -regular season palatable- can still add a post season ACE a la Verlander or Greinke in July) + Patino for 2021 and beyond + Arias to give them insurance (Correa/or Altuve will leave down the road) + Hefdges (Chirinos is 35, no one in the horizon) + Morejon.... who says no?
Nice....a new high....6 for 1 trade and hope some guy signs a 3 yr extension......ROTFLMAO

Quote from fenn68 on October 29, 2019, 2:30 pmI guess may the first question on the value of Myers to the Padres right now should be shaped by (without getting anyone in return or adding anyone into the deal) by you as management ... how much would you eat of his contract to just make him go away.
Owed $61MM over the next 3 years. You can make him go away by just a DFA and eat it all ... so getting rid of him is easy.
I would not do that since the Padres OF now is not all that impressive and probably could improve it more by moving Renfroe, Margot before Myers ... but then at the right deal.

Actually Fenn, he is owed $67.5M for the next 3 years($22.5M per year), plus a $1M buyout for the 4th year. A no brainer at this point. So he is really owed $68.5M for the next 3 years. This is per baseball reference salaries on his page.

Well if you look at comments from Fowler, he said $10M per year, so it sounds like he is willing to eat $30M to make Myers go away. Making Myers a $12.5M per year player. Probably still a little high for his WAR value, but definitely more palatable than $22.5M per year. I think you could get a DET or maybe SEA to take on $38.5M in an athletic bounce back candidate, as long as the only return SD is hoping for is a Tony Gwynn rookie card and a box of baseballs.

So lets just say he is owed $69 mil to round it out..
Question #1 how much value does he have to a team (I would guess this is a polarizing ? but with 29 other teams out there I am sure there are 29 different valuations on Myers) Teams could gamble on career breakout, Teams could see him as a very valuable 4th OF and Teams can view him as a sunk cost with $5mil a year ceiling... lets just say a couple teams view him as a $9mil a yr player (probably higher by some, but lets say $9mil is the highest value a team places on Myers) so using fangraphs Prospect $$$ value
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/an-update-to-prospect-valuation/
say Baltimore wants some prospects in Lieu of $$ for taking on Myers... Padres could offer Weathers (50 P $21 mil value) + Potts (high 45 around $15 mil) + Nix (mid 45 $10 mil) +Myers = (with that $9 mil value (x3) the Orioles have on him ) that would = $73 mil
so a fair trade with Orioles could look something like this Mychael Givens RP for Myers (taking on all $69 mil on) + Weathers + Potts and Nix
Padres would then have freed up $20 mil to pursue upgrades elsewhere..
Trade could also be expanded to include say $10 mil (30 mil extra value) per yr.. and adding Trey Mancini to the deal or taking on Naylor without the extra $10 mil
so basically a lot of ways for Myers to stay or go.. Obviously if Padres simply want to eat Myers and pay $0 dollars of his salary they can just DFA him and do so... cost and effect... the more they eat of Myers the less prospect revenue they need to include.. example they pony up $30 mil then Weathers is off the table.. etc,, etc,,, ... a lot of ways this could go.. but I think Myers days in SDP are numbered as in no more than 60 days left

If we could get rid of him and only lose Weathers, Potts and Nix I would do that in an instant! I personally think any team would want more prospect value than that. We could turn that $20 million into Dickerson and Akiyama and still have money left over. Who brings more value? Would you pay $69 million for Weathers, Potts and Nix? I wouldn't.

I wouldn't.
we paid $13 mil for Mitchell
Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 29, 2019, 3:42 pmI mean just a few yrs ago we had an erie similar situation... James Shields was owed $65 mil... AJP wanted to move him - but didnt want to include prospects.. So Padres ate $38 million to get a lower a International signee who had yet to play any minor league games... the rest is history.. Fernando Tatis jr basically became a Padre for $65 mil (since thats how much we saved overall)
