The real problem with Myers is he has no role with a team at this point. Part of the reason SD signed him this deal, was he was supposed to be "The Face of the Franchise" and the leader of the clubhouse for the hot lava of talent coming to SD in the last few years. He is neither at this point. Add to those points, he does not contribute near enough with his bat to earn his contract. So he has no value to a playoff level team because his offensive contributions dont equal his money he is earning. And he has no value to a rebuilding team because he is not a Hosmer clubhouse guy.

As much as I  (and Fowler) would like to see him move onto another team, it will have to be with a lot of money and young prospects to make a team take a player that should be earning what he did last year, around $5.5M a year, and get basically nothing in return.

I think the best hope now, is to leave him in LF and hope the new manager can make him feel all Tingly inside and hope for a bounce back. We can sign Akiyama to platoon with Margot in CF, and Renfroe in RF based on match ups, with the hope that Renfroe was more 1st half than 2nd half from last year.

Springer is perhaps the one bat that would elevate our offense while possibly giving us multiple yrs (extension) of quality baseball

 

So Myers (same $$ as Springer in 2020) similar Power (especially in Houston), Speed .. obviously OBP/Avg and Defense a big step down .. But Tucker assuming Springers position actually improves D

 

Proposed coontinue winning now and future .. (assuming Springer agrees to a 3yr extension -so 4 yrs $120 mil or so)

Myers + $20 mil + Naylor (Gurriel is 35 and either Myers or Naylor can slip into 1b in a yr) + Lucchesi (no where near Cole-- but Lucchesi + McCullers make loss of Cole -regular season palatable- can still add a post season ACE a la Verlander or Greinke in July) + Patino for 2021 and beyond +  Arias to give them insurance (Correa/or Altuve will leave down the road) + Hefdges (Chirinos is 35, no one in the horizon) + Morejon.... who says no?

Well if you look at comments from Fowler, he said $10M per year, so it sounds like he is willing to eat $30M to make Myers go away. Making Myers a $12.5M per year player. Probably still a little high for his WAR value, but definitely more palatable than $22.5M per year. I think you could get a DET or maybe SEA to take on $38.5M in an athletic bounce back candidate, as long as the only return SD is hoping for is a Tony Gwynn rookie card and a box of baseballs.

so a fair trade with Orioles could look something like this Mychael Givens RP for Myers (taking on all $69 mil on) + Weathers + Potts and Nix

Trade could also be expanded to include say $10 mil (30 mil extra value) per yr.. and adding Trey Mancini to the deal or taking on Naylor without the extra $10 mil

If we could get rid of him and only lose Weathers, Potts and Nix I would do that in an instant! I personally think any team would want more prospect value than that. We could turn that $20 million into Dickerson and Akiyama and still have money left over. Who brings more value? Would you pay $69 million for Weathers, Potts and Nix? I wouldn't.
