Trade ideas

Probably pass on Archer (especially if had to give up any real talent to get him) .... at 31 and following four years of declining innings and rising ERA ... he is more likely from moving from “average” for that period to below average / injury waiting to happen. Contract is good (2020 and 2021 both reasonable club options). So worth a risk ... for the right price.

Archer probably would not have been traded by Huntington since he was looking bad for trading for him and needed him to rebound in PITT ... but not an issue now.

Probably ... considering the risk, recent performance, and short control ... maybe more an Allen / Nix type package ... two OK prospects and PITT saves some money. No “big names”

=====

Pitt is not going to trade Reynolds at 24 and in the ROY hunt. He is exactly what they would want to keep. So unless the trade starts with Tatis ... not going anywhere

I will keep it more simple and just focus on what gets Marte out of PITT and in SD. Keeping in mind he has only 2 control years ($24MM total) so not a long term investment. PITT will likely want long control at league minimum to start is rebuild and could work toward multiple good pieces as opposed to one elite (and Preller would not give that anyway).

Maybe closer to a Bolanos ... Austin Allen ... Olivares type deal? Dance around that level of player as opposed to the real elite prospects.

====

If that worked ... then sign Dickerson (given the apparent lack of interest in FA corner OF ... the price should be relatively reasonable) setting up 2 of the 3 OF slot as Marte - Dickerson and giving Preller the freedom to deal most of the current OF bodies as needed in other deals ... maybe for SP ... maybe for back-up INF ... maybe for the Paddack or Tatis out of the low minors (and not 40 man roster).

I know that the Mets were looking for huge prospect value in return for Syndergaard to make up for their horrible trade for Cano and Diaz. I think that the Pirates may be looking for the same thing in return for Archer. A return that is at least equal to Meadows and Glasnow. Even though that is close to impossible. When regular buyers turn into sellers they seem to want the world for whatever they are selling. I personally think we should go the free agency route to fill most of our needs.

They bought a lemon for $1mil.. Now that everyone knows is a lemon nobody ia going to pay more than $500k taking a chance on adding. Rebuilt engine and increasing the price od that lemon to the $1 mil or + it was worth

There's no reason you trade for Archer, the evidence is that the Pirates don't know what the heck they are doing with Pitchers. So you trade for those they did not covet so highly as to give 2 potential #1's away. You try to get Keller and Taillon.

I wouldn't want any of their pitchers. I wouldn't want any of their players outside of Reynolds.

What if KC would take back Hos in exchange for say Duffy and Kennedy? Put in Ashbeck or similar.  Pipedream with regime change there.

Just looking at Astros OF'ers

Alvarez 22 is a young stud and virtually (untouchable)

Brantley 33 a career .792 OPS with BA/OBP skills and lefty bat we sorely miss -- 50/50 possibility he is available--older and 1 yr control probably make him more valuable to the Stros vs return on trade

Reddick 33 career OPS .753.. lefty bat yes BUT not sure he moves the neddle at all and with Myers (.763) and Renfroe (.788) we would actually be playing a "lesser" bat.. NO THANKS

Misiarick (spelling) 29 .660 OPS.. for all the negativity we fling towards Margot (.695) he is better and would even be better in Houston vs him... NO THANKS

which leads us to Tucker (.652 small sample size) 23... Top prospect with huge ceiling if Astros win WS they might want to take a small step back -- give Tucker the starting job and remain very competitive (-Cole, + McCullers) just not as dominant as 2019

and then there is SPRINGER 31 .849 OPS an elite OF with 1 yr of control left who is likely let go at age 32 and with Big $$ implications.. as is and entering arb 3 with a pricetag around $20 mil...

Springer is perhaps the one bat that would elevate our offense while possibly giving us multiple yrs (extension) of quality baseball

So Myers (same $$ as Springer in 2020) similar Power (especially in Houston), Speed .. obviously OBP/Avg and Defense a big step down .. But Tucker assuming Springers position actually improves D

Proposed coontinue winning now and future .. (assuming Springer agrees to a 3yr extension -so 4 yrs $120 mil or so)

Myers + $20 mil + Naylor (Gurriel is 35 and either Myers or Naylor can slip into 1b in a yr) + Lucchesi (no where near Cole-- but Lucchesi + McCullers make loss of Cole -regular season palatable- can still add a post season ACE a la Verlander or Greinke in July) + Patino for 2021 and beyond +  Arias to give them insurance (Correa/or Altuve will leave down the road) + Hefdges (Chirinos is 35, no one in the horizon) + Morejon.... who says no?

There’s particular need in the Houston rotation, which is set to part with top hurler Gerrit Cole as well as the capable Wade Miley, who threw a lot of useful innings before a late nosedive. You can do worse than a staff anchored by Justin Verlander and Zack Greinke, though neither is a youthful hurler and there are questions after that point. Jose Urquidy was likely already ticketed for a spot before his impressive recent World Series outing, but he’s largely unproven and that still only accounts for three spots. There’s always talent to work with in Houston, but high-ceiling prospect Forrest Whitley and other options have even lesser track records than Urquidy.

There’ll surely be some kind of outside addition to ensure adequate depth, though it’s unclear how much cash president of baseball operations Jeff Luhnow will be able to dedicate to that purpose. The status of McCullers will therefore weigh heavily on the Astros’ offseason planning and, perhaps, its fortunes in 2020.

and just like that MLBTrade Rumors sort of supports my Lucchesi to Astros point...above ^^

So, you want to trade Myers, Naylor, Patino, Arias, Hedges, and Morejon plus $20M for Springer? First off, Springer is 30 years old, that is now on the "down slide" for most MLB players, he could be an exception, but cant count on it. Two, he is one year away from FA, so it is doubtful that he signs an extension. And finally, 6 players and $20M for one player. If AJP didnt say no to that trade, he should be fired on the spot.
