Trade ideas
Quote from onlypads on March 4, 2020, 7:49 pmQuote from BoosterSD on March 4, 2020, 6:53 pmI know Spring is a time for baseball optimism, and there are some things to be excited about in Peoria. However, there are many in the media, and some on here, that think SD is still one season away from being real contenders.
NYY and BOS are in real need of SP, and many have speculated about trading Quantrill, especially to BOS. And BOS maybe more interested in Quantrill or other younger cheaper SPs since they may need to reload a bit. However, NYY are in full WS or bust mode. So instead of thinking about Q going in trade, I propose this train of thought.
SD trades Garrett Richards to NYY. They are already over the CBT; however, Richards is only $7.75M in CBT value, so the tax addition would be nominal. Not sure Richards would command a lot, but could get something decent from NYY. Would love to take more advantage of NYY in sending them Richards, like taking a good portion of Myers contract, but NYY is so RHH heavy I dont think they would have interest in Myers even if he was performing close to his contract. 1B is probably their weakest position, and could use a LH bat. So maybe Richards and Naylor for a better prospect?
I get where you are coming from here. However, in doing so we are kind of giving up on this year. Richards is 1-3 in the rotation and not replaceable this year.
I tend to think that Q has more upside than L so I would certainly want a good piece back if Q is sent. I really dont want to work a deal that sends Myers until after this year in the hope that he recoups value and/or to see if Myers may turn around under the new regime.
I still think a mega deal of Bryant and Contreras could be worked out before the deadline. In a world where payroll wasnt an issue I would just say pick 4-5 from the following: Davies, L/Q, Hedges, Mejia, Olivares, Morejon, Pagan, Bolanos, Weathers, and Cordero.

Quote from JasonE135 on March 4, 2020, 8:00 pmThe Cubs wanted Lamet and Campusano for Bryant alone. We said no. Bryant and Contreras will cost at least twice as much and probably more.

Quote from Ben Davey on March 4, 2020, 9:28 pmI dont buy into the idea that the Padres are still one season away from "actually contending."
Really, the thing that makes a "pretty good" team, really good, is how bad the rest of the division is. For a long time the Yankees and Red Sox feasted on the Orioles/Jays/Rays to rack up wins. For the Padres, the Dodgers will be our biggest rival no matter what. Yes, Kershaw and Turner are getting old but the Dodgers have the $ and farm to replace them. Outside of them though, the Rockies and Giants should both be fairly terrible this year, and the D*Backs are a toss up but still see their window a few years away. That means if the Padres can beat up on the lesser teams, and come close to a 9-9 split with LA they are looking at 85-90+ wins already.
The Padres biggest problem is there is no one on the team that you can pencil in outside of Machado. Everyone else has a giant question mark over their head, whether it is health (Tatis/Pham/Richards/Lamet/etc...), 1st/2nd year player (Paddack/Quantril/Grisham/Naylor/Mejia) or can they rebound to what they once were (Hosmer/Myers). I would not be surprised if the Padres won 90 or lost 90.

Agree and would add that both the NL Central and NL East are setting up to be "balanced" which suggests each team has a legit shot against their Division competition which should result every team's win total being more likely to peak in the high 80s ... take out the Division winners and the two Wild Card teams could be mid-80 win teams.
Given the NL West ... Padres do have a legit shot (if their players play to their potential) to be at that level and secure a Wild Card slot.
I don't expect any significant trades (adds or deleted) until the picture is clearer ... so maybe closer to the trade deadline .... better focus to trade assets towards the biggest need at that time.

Quote from fenn68 on March 5, 2020, 3:51 amThe Padres could get to the regular season without making any roster moves since they have the players on the roster who can be optioned to the minors. One likely is exception is the release of Valera to make room for Dozier. Just don't see any non-roster types setting up to be added for opening day ... long shot Lagares ... and still 3 weeks to see if another 60 day IL candidate emerges.
If they need to open a slot, maybe a fringe housekeeping move such as dealing Perdomo (most teams still want RP) for a non-roster short season / rookie ball prospects ... sort of Preller's strength is constructing trades.

I'm in the camp that Pads will have a 5th OF who is RH & CF capable on 26-man. HATE the "4 OF, 4 2B" ideas circulating. Don't see the logical sense with the amount of time available overall in OF (vs. INF) with: Pham off injuries, Myers to be spelled/pushed, and an unproven CF just past prospect status.... OF screams to carry 5, not "Profar in LF" once a month.
Think Lagares OR Almonte will be added as the "bridge" to Olivares later this season. This makes one move necessary, as you point out above. I'm really liking the 40-man roster composition at that point to start the season.... but there's a big problem...

Quote from Brian Connelly on March 5, 2020, 7:22 amBooster, G. Richards a midseason possibility, but no way before the season starts. Preller needs to be .500+ for job security; that's not the way to achieve it.

Agree on the 5th OF need of a RHH/CF type .... just hard to find a legitimate good one who would fit a limited use role effectively.
Lagares has not looked all that good so far (and never could hit much or stay healthy) ... Almonte seems to be well past his CF days. Would guess Preller is "looking" but will not over pay for a guy that is destined to be behind Pham-Grisham-Myers with with Olivares on the come as a RHH/CF. Plus more OF competition coming soon in Cordero-Trammell-Naylor-Ona putting longer term value in question.
Actually, don't really see many options on other teams that really fill that profile that may be on the market.
Theory good ... execution difficult.
Might try to induce Houston (with a glut of OF) to deal Myles Straw ... RHH super utility speedster who can play CF and some INF. Houston may have some need in the pen, #5 SP insurance, maybe even catcher. Preller may be able to sort through those needs and find a reasonable match to help Houston. Not going to be a "star" but could develop into a very valuable super utility bench option.

Quote from fenn68 on March 5, 2020, 1:15 pmObscure rule alert:
An Article XX-B MLB free-agent who signs a Major League contract after 11:59 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series has an automatic "no trade" right through June 15th. The player can waive this right, but if he does he can be traded only for cash and/or player contracts with a maximum aggregate value of $50,000.
For the Padres that covers Pomeranz, Stammen, and Pierce Johnson since they signed ML contracts as FA. Rule does not apply to players signing minor league contracts.
