Lin and Acee made it seem like AJP is looking to add an "impact bat" .. Adding that the Myers trade is simply step 1 of 2 or 3.. Where Myers and as much salary as possible move to Sox and then Padres go at Lindor or Bryant type .

Right. Trading Myers is about creating the financial flexibility to potentially add another impact player. I'm just saying that I doubt any significant pieces will be involved from the Red Sox if it happens. All indications are that Quantrill would be the centerpiece and the Padres would cover half of Wil's contract. The Red Sox also want a significant prospect like Campusano or Arias. I'm guessing we are countering with lesser prospects or some of our excess relievers. All of that is just to even out the negative value that Wil brings. The return from the Red Sox will probably be a lotto ticket minor leaguer or fringe major leaguer. There's been nothing to indicate that we are going to try to expand the deal to do something beyond just dumping Wil. I don't think anyone should be getting their hopes up about Benintendi or Verdugo or anyone else of significance from the Red Sox.

Quote from fenn68 on February 18, 2020, 7:35 pmIt is going to take two very good prospects to get Boston to take the $45MM the Padres want to clear for their future / next moves. Not getting anyone then back from Boston. If they peg Myers as a 1 WAR player they may go $25MM for him ... then padres cover the $20MM difference with prospects.
Then could go different ways.
Cleveland deals Lindor to CINN for Senzel and Galvis. Padres deal prospects to Cleveland for Senzel.
Padres hold on the money saved on Myers and next winter combine it with the scheduled drop in payroll and sign Betts. Or not.

Padres get: Verdugo, JBJ, 30 MM (as: 10/10/10), 40th man on roster = RP
Boston gets: Myers, Quantrill, Campusano, Naylor
Padres net neutral payroll this year (+1 MM) with + JBJ - Myers. New OF: Pham LF (2) JBJ CF (1) Verdugo RF (5) of present/future.
JBJ departs next year: Grisham / Trammell / Cordero develop in 2020 & compete for starting CF 2021; 2nd place = 4th OF, 3rd place likely traded. Pads save 10 MM in 2021 & 2022.
Boston net neutral payroll this year with new OF: Naylor LF (6) Benintendi CF (3?) Myers RF (3). Gain desperately needed #4-5 SP & top 100 MLB prospect C of future.
Payroll increases +10 MM in 2021 & 2022 when payroll falls from other players being gone.
Trade distills down to: Campusano + Naylor + SOME amount of $ between 0 - 20 MM (vs a standalone trade of just Myers & Q for $$ savings) for Verdugo??
Replace Verdugo with Benintendi and lets go.. Beni $3.4 20 and $6.7 2021 .. Has CF experience and at worst he and Pham give us fast COFers..
I don't like Verdugos Back Stress L5 fracture.. He has been dealing with it since last May and feels like a chronic issue to me...
Benintendi + JBJ FOR Myers +$21 mil + Naylor + Olivares + Campusano + Q + Arias..
Benintendi adjusted to LHP in 2019 and made adjustments that will serve him well going foward I expect him to be 3.5+ WAR type player in 2020
Geez...just stop already....6 plus 21 million for 2 .....Bradley is Chase Headly all over again.....that is a massive overpay and if you think you hate Meyers contract just imagine how much you would hate Bradleys and his in the tank game. Why give Boston the Padres catcher of the future and help them out ?
Why help Boston out at all ?
Padres Farm to Boston - C - Campusano #5 prospect, SS - Arias #13 prospect, OF / CF - Olivares #16 prospect
Bradley will be off the Padres after 2020 and out of baseball within 2 years so the only player of value is Benintendi and you give up....wait for it....Meyers , who will have a bounce back year without Andy Green screwing him over, Quantril, who will be in the starting rotation at some point this year, Campusano who may be in San Diego sooner than later as THE catcher, Olivares, he of the 18 knocks, .283 avg and 35 stolen bases and pretty solid outfield, Naylor, who everybody says will blossom this year, Arias, solid glove and speed and only 19......giving up all those prospects plus 3 Major League Players plus 21 million to make Meyers go away......Just Stop or at least share whatever it is you have 😉

Quote from Fred on February 18, 2020, 9:34 pmFirst, Wil Myers cost us Trea Turner. Now he's going to cost us a Quantrill and probably Campusano and Arias just to get rid of him. I mean shit. Utter shit. Thanks for letting me vent.

You know dang well if he has a back issue he will never produce for the Padres.
Plus Campusano will become Pudge Rodriguez.
Because Padres.
It's hard not to be negative when discussing the Padres. Damn. Especially Myers.

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 19, 2020, 6:04 amI say forget the Red Sox and concentrate on a 3 team deal with the Reds and Indians.
Reds get Lindor
Padres get Senzel
Cle gets prospects from both.
Could you imagine the Reds lineup with Lindor?
They've already added Moose and Castellanos.
Reds could send Galvis/Aquino/India
Padres could send anyone not named Gore/Patino/Abrams/Campusano.
Let's say Naylor/Quantrill/Arias
The Reds are going for it right now and adding Lindor would practically guarantee them that Division
Cleveland could get quite a haul this way and all 3 teams are happy. They get Galvis to hold down SS and Arias to take over.
So their entire haul is Galvis/Aquino/India/Naylor/Quantrill/Arias for Lindor.
The Reds give up Senzel/Galvis/Aquino/India for 2 years of Lindor.
The Padres get Senzel who could play CF this year(with Grisham/Cordero) and take over 2b for the next 5 years after Profar.
Seems too perfect to actually work out for us.
Is this too much or not enough for who?

And Fernando Rodney got us Chris Paddack AND James Shields, Tatis Jr..
Some come some go... Remember the great LAD traded Pedro Martinez at one time..
Revisiting the Myers trade.. He was coming off a ROY.. AJP loved his analytics and speed/power athleticism mix and went and got him... And then extended him (like we want to do Tatis Jr) sometimes extensions work..sometimes they don't ..but Myers deal was pretty much a good gamble.. Even as mediocre as he has been ..Myers still has a $20 mil SURPLUS since the extension .. (Obviously thats because 1st few years salaries were very low) all wil needs is like 6 WAR (2 per year) in 20/21 and 22 to make his deal a break even affair..

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 19, 2020, 6:34 amThat may be too much for us to give for Senzel the more I think about it.
He’s still a prospect himself really so maybe we keep either Naylor or Q.
I would think Cle. would want Arias either way.
