WAR in 2019 > Bryant's-- finished 21st in MVP .. sure his fielding is Naylor/Reyes like-- BUT his offensive game is the step child of Pham/Reyes-- High OBP/POWER combo... DH mostly in 19.. but played 56 in RF, and for his career he mostly has played in the OF--- If Wil is not cutting it, or we simply want to improve our lineup down the stretch-- a name to look for, and should not be a $$ problem ($4 mil in 2020, $7 mil 2021) so if we get him in July only $2mil or so for 2020... Hits lefties and righties well so no negative splits..
I dont know what a package for him looks like atm (or in July) but I would imagine something like Ona + Q gets it done--
You have got to be kidding. Soler hit 48 Home Runs! 48! and had 117 RBI's. The Royals would start with Gore and add on from there.

Quote from fenn68 on February 18, 2020, 10:24 amKevin Acee is the gift that keeps giving. Reporting a Myers to Boston deal is still being discussed ... the usual suspects.
Then throws in Preller may still want a big add suggesting Lindor or Senzel COULD be a possibility reminding that the Kimbrel deal was just before the season started.

Quote from sportwarrior on February 18, 2020, 11:26 amNow that Mookie is off the table and we can no longer block him from going to the Dodgers, I'm even less inclined to package any of our prospects just to get rid of Myers. Senzel miiiight be an exception, but I hate the idea of giving up Campusano or my boy Arias. I'm not even on board with trading Quantrill anymore. I think he's gonna be the guy we saw last summer and not the guy we saw in August/September.
Bottom line is I really don't want to overpay just to get his $$ off the books.

Quote from onlypads on February 18, 2020, 11:32 amAgreed on some points, but for a player like Verdugo or Senzel in addition to freeing up liabilities I am okay with giving up Arias, Quantrill and more. Would take more I'm sure. I really want to hold Camp, Abrams, and Patino.
I still really dont understand a SS add.
I think Lucchessi will hold 5 down and the younger guys coming up are exciting.

Quote from Brian Connelly on February 18, 2020, 1:35 pmLOL! Back to square one.... Myers + Quantrill = "x" MM $$$ saved...
The one interesting dynamic that's new is that Pads could theoretically eat most or even all of Myers' $ in 2020... in exchange for Boston taking more of it in 21-22, which would fit both clubs needs better (than Pads trying to squeeze Betts 27 MM in somehow).
I have to believe that like it or not, JBJ is getting discussed here... Boston: Myers- LF, Benintendi - CF, Verdugo-RF not bad at all. If I'm Preller I'd take +11 JBJ 1 yr for -61 MM Myers (+Q) 3 yrs; "Net" 50 MM saved!
... I HOPE it's Verdugo, but AGAIN: Myers + Q do not even = close to just the $$ owed to Myers. To get a long control asset like Verdugo would take WAYYY more than that; almost a separate trade really. Boston probably does value Quantrill or any other loosely defined "MLB SP" > any other team due to being SO thin @ SP post-Price trade. If one of their top 4 catches a cold or stubs a toe, let alone really gets injured, Preller may really get max leverage.
It's funny how every time the idea comes up, even though we're all acutely aware that Myers' contract is a liability, we think somehow we're going to be able to turn lead into gold?

I agree with this.... except OK with JUST Quantrill (or Lucchesi) specifically. Have argued since day 1 that it was "inefficient" to use prospects to attach to Myers to save $, and that young pre-arb MLB SP gives the most "bang for the buck" because of how highly MLB SP is valued/priced.
I also agree I don't like the concept of "just" saving $ without some specific asset to spend the saved $$ ON! ...But look at this season with Mookie now a LAD... Does it REALLY torpedo the Padres chances of being competitive for the NL West? a Wild Card spot? to get "nothing" back for Myers + Quantrill... but save 30 - 50 MM over the next 3 years to add "the missing piece/s" to a team that projects to be really good esp SP/RP in 2021+, but may have some position player holes... Especially if majority of $$ is saved in 2021-22.
Very convoluted, but next year Pads payroll assuming ALL Arb eligible possibles hit Arb, AND ALL Arb eligible guys return (unlikely: Hedges, Garcia, Perdomo...) = 8 MM +/- "Lower"... but lose: Yates, G. Richards, & Profar. "Just" extending Yates would cause 2021 payroll to be > this year's. No room currently to make a big move for a difference maker next year... without corresponding big $ out (trade).
If Sox need Jeisson Rosario to pull the trigger... fine. But I agree I would rather save less $ & hold on to system top 10 prospects, than save a little bit more $ but lose them.

I think because of Myers's age and the fact Green is gone and Myers was very good just a few years ago leads most to think he could still be an above average player.
Maybe not a $20 mil per player but maybe more than a $10 mil per player.
Many, myself included, don't want to lose a guy like Arias or Campusano "just" to save money on Myers. If we are getting a player back that "makes us better" than OK.But just to save payroll?
Nope.....not interested.

Padres get: Verdugo, JBJ, 30 MM (as: 10/10/10), 40th man on roster = RP
Boston gets: Myers, Quantrill, Campusano, Naylor
Padres net neutral payroll this year (+1 MM) with + JBJ - Myers. New OF: Pham LF (2) JBJ CF (1) Verdugo RF (5) of present/future.
JBJ departs next year: Grisham / Trammell / Cordero develop in 2020 & compete for starting CF 2021; 2nd place = 4th OF, 3rd place likely traded. Pads save 10 MM in 2021 & 2022.
Boston net neutral payroll this year with new OF: Naylor LF (6) Benintendi CF (3?) Myers RF (3). Gain desperately needed #4-5 SP & top 100 MLB prospect C of future.
Payroll increases +10 MM in 2021 & 2022 when payroll falls from other players being gone.
Trade distills down to: Campusano + Naylor + SOME amount of $ between 0 - 20 MM (vs a standalone trade of just Myers & Q for $$ savings) for Verdugo??

Replace Verdugo with Benintendi and lets go.. Beni $3.4 20 and $6.7 2021 .. Has CF experience and at worst he and Pham give us fast COFers..
I don't like Verdugos Back Stress L5 fracture.. He has been dealing with it since last May and feels like a chronic issue to me...
Benintendi + JBJ FOR Myers +$21 mil + Naylor + Olivares + Campusano + Q + Arias..
Benintendi adjusted to LHP in 2019 and made adjustments that will serve him well going foward I expect him to be 3.5+ WAR type player in 2020

You know dang well if he has a back issue he will never produce for the Padres.
Plus Campusano will become Pudge Rodriguez.
Because Padres.
