Trade ideas

How about a trade with TOR. TOR gets Myers, Naylor, and Quantril with about $7.5M per year in cash and SD gets Derek Fisher, LHH OF with an MiL history of .280 BA and .374 OBP. And is not a FA until after 2025. TOR is reportedly interested in a 1B that can play other positions, and they need SP. SD needs a LHH OFer.

Not sure about Toronto’s financial situation, but from their perspective that might work although a deal of Myers, Lucchesi, and Bolanos maybe be a better selling point to get them to take more of the contract. They may want SP stronger than Quantrill and another pitcher more than Naylor. Myers fits the 1B/LF/DH flexibility the want ... and not sure they want more from that perspective ... not Naylor if Myers.

Fisher a one time big prospect is now 26 and a pure strikeout machine with a sub-.200 bat in the ML ... not even worth taking ... take some minor league non-roster prospect(s).

I guess it would depend on how the Padres use the extra salary space ... but Toronto may be a partner for Myers.  Still think Detroit is a better call since they have the money and need volume of prospects that don’t have to be elite ... just don’t ask for a big return from Detroit ... that will kill the deal.

From what I read about TOR on MLBTR with all the youth that they have coming, and after this year, the dollars from Tulo is gone, they have very little in the form on money on the books. So Myers, with some buy down could work in TOR.

Quantrill still has big time promise. He was our best starter for a good stretch last year. He is in no way just a throw in. I personally really want to keep him. If Toronto doesn't think he adds much value fine, keep him. I personally value him just below Paddack and Gore. Maybe just a touch behind Patino, maybe not. He is way ahead of Lauer and Lucchesie. He has already shown that he can dominate for a stretch like they never have.

Derek Fisher is not very good...  I wouldnt even trade DFA to be Martini for him.. Let alone Naylor and company

The one Blue Jay that I love is Gurriel .. He can play SS / LF and 2B and hits Righties great.. (He is RH Bat..but hits rightys and lefties well..he actually hits righties better than lefties).. I think he is one of those bats .869 OPS last year.. You move all over the place (like LAD does with Taylor)

I would ask or make a play for Kyle Tucker (Astros) he seems to have figured out mlb pitching (small sample size 2019) .. But like Tramell is a young higher regarded spec.. Amongst tge top 5-10 in baseball and if he can claim one spot in the OF.. His left bat which plays vs both RHP/.LHP becomes extremely valuable.. And this dude has Yelich 2.0 written all over..

What would it take? Astros need mlb ready low cost dudes to replenish and be able to keep some of their soon to be arb 2 and 3 guys if not FA.. So Lucchesi SP + Patino SP + Naylor DH/1B/OF might be a good use of trade chips for a talent like Tucker....

Sign Strasburg

Add Tucker (trade)

Add Marte (trade)

Sign Dickerson

How is that for a revamped OF.. Keep Renfroe PH/DH/4th OF/ platoon with Dickerson vs LHP and Jank as lefty CFer defensive specialist PR type... Gives Trammell a full yr to perfect his skills in minors.... With Stras/Paddack/Lamet from the right side over the next 5yrs and Gore from Left with Quantrill/Cantillo/Bolanos/Weather's and others on their way or already here..not to mention Espinoza/Morejon etc.. Patino can be use to acquire a talent like Tucker and such a move/paired with the others above pushes this team to the brink of serious contender

With Gurriel, Alvarez, Brantley, Reddick, Springer, I dont think they would have any interest in Naylor. I think HOU would make SD substitute Arias for Naylor, since they are probably concerned with contract coming to expire of Correa, and his health issues as well.

I think it would need to be HOU gets Luchessi, Quantril, Patino, and Arias for Tucker.

Houston counters with Tucker for Paddack and Munoz.

Houston is going to push to maximize its chance of winning in 2020-21 ... before the roof collapses on the success run. Cole gone after this season ... Brantley, Reddick, Gurriel FA after 2020 .... Verlander, Greinke, Correa FA after 2021. That is a lot of critical talent gone (and about $100MM of payroll) after the next two seasons. If they want they have the money to extend Correa but all the others are "older" and marginal short term extension candidates.

Better chance they find a taker for Reddick (1 year / $13MM) than move Tucker.

Which pairing Reddick and Renfroe in RF might be a very good platoon both offensively and defensively. Margot/Jank in CF. And then Dickerson in LF. Ship out Myers.

IF the Padres hire Washington (along with his reputation of having players run through walls for him) ... could this alter the trade strategies this winter?

Specifically thinking Myers ... to unload him now would require eating a major portion of his salary (never a good thing) or bundling with a number of quality prospects (who could be used to add ML talent not get rid of Myers) ...

Myers has raw talent ... can Washington get Myers to play up to his level? That would be best for either the Padres on the field or create better trade value next winter (trade deadline).

Worth the test for upside? Not as though the Padres have a competitive set of OF options anyway.
