Quote from MrPadre19 on October 12, 2019, 8:18 amI’m all for keeping Myers because I think he is more likely a .270/.330/.450 20-20 guy than the guy we’ve seen the last couple seasons.
Plus I don’t like the idea of losing prospects AND paying a large part of his contract just to move him.But it seems like moving him is a probability so have to think about how.
My guess is it’s 50/50 he’s a Padre to start 2020.....but if he stays and hits to gain value does that make it more likely we can move him or more likely we want to keep him?

Quote from fenn68 on October 12, 2019, 10:07 amAgree it is a coin flip on Myers being a Padre in 2020.
His being moved will still be based on the Padres perception of the return (or cost to deal him) and the avoidance of salary ... and that will continue to be a moving target based on his performance changing, his contract getting shorter, and in hand alternatives that have proven to be as good or better for more than small sample size.
Can speculate on who we COULD get that is better ... but until they are in hand ... moving Myers could make the Padres actually worse. Can speculate that players will develop as better options ... but until they do ... that too can make the Padres worse. A bit of a chicken and egg thing just made harder if the Padres want to be better in 2020.
Sort of allowing Preller some wiggle room in moving Myers only if the deal is really favorable to the Padres ... e.g. moving most of the contract and giving up minimal prospect assets.

and the front office.
Never understood (or accepted) the logic of taking a major asset (in their view given the extension) and bounce him around for RF to CF to 1B to LF to 3B to LF/CF/RF/1B just because he is very athletic ... none of those were making him "better" yet they kept going down that path ... and clearly those moves did not make the team win more.
Now he may still "under perform" but I still feel that sitting him in LF ... let him to focus on one defensive position and offense ... is the best route to getting the maximum production out of him. At this point, that seems to be the right choice ... not needed at 1B/3B and should be kept out of CF for the good of the team. No need for him in RF if they platoon Renfroe / Naylor.

Quote from WindsorUK on October 12, 2019, 12:39 pmTotally agree 3finger and Fenn.
Management should have NEVER moved him out of RF.
Wish AG had grown a pair at some point and told the brass to let him pick his lineup( hell, should have done it. He got canned anyway)
If we can't move Wil without overpaying, I'm all for leaving our $20 million man in one of the corners ......and just let him play! I'm sure he'd hit .250/ .330/ .500+ with 20+ HR's and 20+ steals. I'd be content with that...... after what we've seen the past 2 years.

he hasnt hit .800 OPS or more in any of his MLB seasons except ROY season and .831... he has never slugged more than n.474 (his ROY season) or .461 as a SDP (his AS season)... so if he goes .250/.330/.460 .800 he would basically be having a career yr as a Padre... I'll take that with his Defense in LF or RF

Quote from Commie on October 12, 2019, 3:48 pmYou know Myers caught in the minors right? He's such a great athlete maybe they should try him there next season. His bag would play well there. I'm sure Manny and Hos would be very supportive.
I second or third or whatever the sentiment in moving him around. He can be used in right and left, but no CF or 1b absent emergency.

Quote from JasonE135 on October 12, 2019, 7:53 pmAbsolutely! I think the Padres ruined both Myers and Urias seasons by moving them all over the place. It probably had an affect on Naylor too. If you want a guy to hit, you need to give him a position and let him make it his and get comfortable. For now that should be Myers in LF and Renfroe and Naylor in RF. It can be adjusted if we pick someone up or lose someone, but give these guys a regular position for the whole year. Make a regular schedule so they know when they will be playing and give them regular ABs so they can get into a groove.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 13, 2019, 9:14 pmHow is this for a reformed OF... LF Dickerson/Renfroe.. CF Marte/Betts... RF Betts/Renfroe... Betts starts everyday ..Marte who hits RHP like if he was lefty plays most of the time and when he sits Betts plays CF.. Dickerson and Renfroe platoon in LF.. Renfroe also gets ABs when Marte sits .. Dickerson 2yrs $11,500,000 per + $12 mil option ($4 mil buyout) ..Marte trade Arias + Torrens + Margot + Cantillo.... Betts trade (expands to include Price) Myers + Naylor + Lucchesi + Quantrill + Hedges + ONA + Morejon (had to pay a little more for Sox to absorb all of Myers....
Net $$$ added $45 mil.. Payroll after arb $165 mil... Betts $30 mil arb drops in 2021.. So we could still add Strasburg with a 5/135 type deal but structure so that 2020 is like $10 mil ..so 2020 payroll $175..
1- Tatis Jr SS
2- Marte CF
3- Betts RF
4- Machado 3B
5- Dickerson LF
6- Mejia C
7- Hosmer 1B
8- Urias 2B
Bench Hedges..Renfroe.. Garcia..France and Franchy
SP Stras/Price/Paddack/Lauer/Lamet... Richards/Gore/Patino
BP Yates/Munoz/Baez/Strahm/Stanmen/Richards(6th starter/swing)/Bolanos/Castillo.... Plenty of others at AAA..
Payroll ..we have Betts for 1 yr but Stras $$ maintains it at 175 in 2021 also.. Matte drops after 2021 as Trammell takes over 2021 payroll $165... Then 22/23 Pads payroll between 150/165... Droping -$32 mil - $7 Hosmer as Price exp and Hosmer drops or opts out (another -$6mil) so as Gore and Patino hit their strides Pads payroll is around $125 ..allowing Tatis Jr extension ..Paddack extension to kick in keeping it at or around 150..
Obviously the whole Price thing can be avoided and we can simply eat $10 mil tgus saving $10 mil and add a SP or trade for one at $15 or less keeping payroll in the 150s or so... But sort of a huge ramp up bold off-season without costing us much farm

If we are going to blow up the team for next year let's go all out. Gore, Yates and Renfroe for Bellinger. We can even throw in CJ Abrams if needed. We get a huge lefty bat. LA gets a new ace, the best closer in baseball this year and a RH with big power to help even out their lineup. They have an overabundance of LH outfielders anyway and need a new closer. Then we can dump Myers with Lauer and Lucchesie (and Cantillo if needed) to a team desperate for pitching. Dickerson signed for left field. Trade any from among Xavier Edwards, Ryan Weathers, Hudson Potts, Tirso Ornelas, Arias and Austin Allen to get someone to take Hosmer. We replace him with Naylor so he can play 1B where he belongs. With the money saved from Hosmer and Myers we can sign Cole. If we sign Cole for $35 million per year and Dickerson for $12 million, we will only be adding $7 million in total payroll. With Trammell in center we have an all left-handed outfield and 1B. The first 3 hitters in our lineup would have all hit over .300 this year. We are set at every position. We have Cole, Paddack, Richards, Lamet, Quantrill, Patino and Morejon for our rotation. Munoz closes, Baez is setup.
