Trade ideas
Quote from JasonE135 on December 29, 2019, 2:51 pmCleveland wants to trade 1 ACE now for 2 ACES and a top hitter later. They won’t get it. They are trading 1 guy. They can do that and still compete this year with no immediate ml players in return. They would love to pair Lamet and Patino with Plesac and Civale. That could give them a top 3 rotation in a year or two. Of course, if we don’t trade them and instead pair Lamet and Patino with Paddack and Gore WE could have a top 3 rotation in a year or two. Unless anybody out there thinks that Clevinger is enough to bring us a WS championship in the next 3 years?

Quote from TatisJr on December 29, 2019, 3:14 pmThere is no way I’d part with Lamet AND Patino even for Clevinger. I could part with one of them plus a Morejon/Baez, Naylor plus another prospect for Clev. To answer your question Jason, yes I think Clevinger with Paddack and Gore, Lamet gives you a WS rotation for 3 years. You keep describing Clevinger as a flavor of the month or new shiny toy and that just isn’t true. He’s been a very good pitcher 3 years and he’s a proven CY young caliber pitcher. He’s without a doubt a top 15 pitcher in the game. Clevinger is the only guy of the reported available stars I’d be willing to part with Patino to acquire. Buying 3 years of his prime ages 29,30,31 would be worth it to me. As much as I love Lindor and Bryant I don’t think I’d be able to part with Patino to acquire two years of their services.

Quote from JasonE135 on December 29, 2019, 4:18 pmI was talking about the idea that we trade both Lamet and Patino for Clevinger. So our rotation would be Clevinger, Paddack and Gore with no Lamet in the rotation. Anyway, we agree that Clevinger is not worth both Lamet and Patino.
As far as the shiny new toy, yes, he is a top 15 pitcher. But now that his name is out there as a trade possibility everyone wants him. Cleveland has been asking for Lux and May TO START from the Dodgers. They also want Verdugo. Is he worth it? He has a 3.20 lifetime ERA. Richards has a 3.60 lifetime ERA, and he did THAT with a terrible first 3 years and pitching the last 2-3 years with a torn UCL. Lamet has even better stuff and more control. Paddack was one of the top pitching specs last year. Gore is THE TOP pitching prospect in baseball. Patino is better than May, who EVERYONE has been asking for. Even Quantrill was the top pitching spec in his class before Tommy John. I could go on and on. We have the pitching talent that every other team on the planet would kill for. Yet people are willing to trade multiple top pitching specs just for someone else because he is DIFFERENT. Why? Everyone wanted Syndergaard the last 2 years. Sure, he is huge, throws harder than anyone and has an amazing slider. They only wanted Tatis and Gore 2 years ago. Why not? They were just specs, no guarantees. Think we might regret that trade now, if we had made it?
Patino and a second tier prospect or two for Clevinger maybe. I wouldn’t even do that myself, but I would be okay with it. But the Indians will demand infinitely more. May and Lux is equal to Gore and Patino. That is the starting point to get a deal done. I want none of that.

I would do this in a heartbeat for 3 years of an affordable Ace in Clevinger.
I may even substitute Olivares with Trammell.
Think about it this way.....if Clevinger was a free agent this offseason he would have received a 6/190 mil contract.
Getting him for $4.5 mil is.....Um....what they call “positive value.”
Clevinger/Gore/Paddack/Lamet/Peanut Vendor would be the best rotation the Padres have ever had.
Patino/Morejon/Naylor/Olivares/Miller

Sure. I am in on that. However, I bet they ask for ML players (thinking Lamet / Yates types) in addition to probably a Gore maybe a Patino and other top positional spec. I am clearly speculating though.

Quote from fenn68 on December 30, 2019, 6:54 amI don’t see the Indians being motivated to deal Clevenger baring an unrealistically high return .... way higher than anything being proposed ... not even sure the Padres have the right assets to make the deal.
Cleveland is a legit contender in the AL Central ... Clevenger is one of the best SP in MLB ... 3 years control ... extremely team friendly salary.
Padres offer Patino as the lead? AA SP that MIGHT be an upper rotation arm in 3 years (after Lindor and Santana are gone) then a long string of “filler” .. maybe “nice” prospects but none exceptional.
Pham - Gore - Arias - Campusano might get their interest.

Quote from fenn68 on December 30, 2019, 8:14 amCleveland has the talent in place to win the AL Central / Wild Card in 2020-21 with elite ML talent in Clevenger and Lindor.
San Diego ... coming off 3 straight 90+ loss seasons ... and needing to make up about 20 wins for a playoff slot (virtually no chance to overtake LAD) ... but with a lot of "prospects".
The proposed trade dynamics are totally reversed. IF San Diego had Clevenger (as a last place team) and Cleveland has a ton of prospects (as a major contender) ... the trade of Clevenger TO Cleveland might make sense (given the pieces tossed around) to benefit a last place team for the future ... but would expect even the last place Padres demand more than a deal headlined by Patino.

Quote from Brian Connelly on December 30, 2019, 9:50 amOK.... completely changing gears here. Looks like I'm not the only one with this idea... from MLBTR chat today:
?? If a team were willing to take on about 75% of Wil Myers' contract, could they get the Padres to include Lucchesi and one of Hedges or Mejia (that is, without also giving up an elite prospect)?ANS: Mejia no, but if Hedges is the guy....I could see that happening.POLL: If you're the Padres, do you trade Lucchesi and Hedges to get rid of 75% of the Wil Myers contract? Yes(51.6% | 458 votes) No(48.4% | 430 votes)
Interesting! My initial reaction was to scoff "makes no sense now, who/what do we spend the $ on".... but then think about our roster if we DO get Akiyama... what DO Pads do? Short side platoon Myers with Grisham & completely torpedo any remaining value Myers has? Start Myers & let Grisham gather dust on the bench as 5th OF?The one thing these 3 players have in common is I feel we do need to trade all 3 of them at some point in the next year... better too "soon" than too late? What do you guys think?

The assumption was there was a team out there willing to do that deal and then would the Padres.
My bias would be that the Padres jump on that deal. Surprised it was that close.
Lucchesi is immediately covered by Quantrill and Gore / Patino would have bumped him in 2021 anyway.
Hedges for all intent and purposes has be relegated to the #2 catcher behind Mejia already ... so the Padres would only need to get a serviceable #2 until they deem Torrens or Campusano ready in 2021. Heck, they worked out France as a C ...
Clearing $15MM of Myers' salary opens the door to some additional quality adds either via trade or FA next year. With this roster ... RF could be covered by maybe not the best options in 2020 but not all that much less desirable than Myers ... Grisham, Cordero, Naylor.
How could the Padres not make that deal to move Myers which they have been unsuccessfully trying to deal since last winter. They do all that and not use any of their better prospects who can now be used for more impactful upgrades (or just upgrade the Padres ML team).
If they sign Akiyama ... even more compelling to make that move with an OF of Pham - Akiyama - Grisham backed by Margot and Cordero.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 30, 2019, 11:21 amGetting more and more interesting to see how Myers does in 2020.
If he hits .260/.335/450 with 20+ HR's we will be glad we held on to him.
Personally I think he will rebound "to some level" and I'm not sure I'm willing to lose Lucchesi just to also lose Myers.
I think Joey is undervalued here amongst us and if Myers can add some value by playing mostly against LH pitching we could probably move him next year without losing a solid #3-#4 starting pitcher and GG Catcher.
It would be different if we had an immediate plan to use the money saved to get better for THIS season.
But i just don't see it.....so let's see if he can rebound.
It isn't impossible that he does.
