The conversation would have to start with Patino and at least one more system top ten. France included makes sense given the hole it would create at 3B for CLE.
Like the thought, and his "down" year was better than most on the 2019 SD roster. I just get the feeling that AJP finally got his favorite toy, and the we will see more Profar at 2B than is being eluded too at this point in time.
But man, IF, AJP could pull of getting both Clevinger and Ramirez from CLE, then we are really talking about something at that point.

Not in connection with the Padres but did hear a discussion about the availability of Ramirez ... basically he would be harder to pry away from Cleveland than either Lindor or Clevenger. Indians control him for 4 more years on a favorable contract for a player with All-Star skills ... no longer in a financial bind ... and destined to lose Lindor (2 years), Clevenger (3 years), Santana (1 year plus option), and Hand (1 year plus option). Plus still are the likely the favorites to win the AL Central in a last hurrah in the next two seasons.
So, likely a deal for Lindor, Clevenger, or Ramirez would require immediate ML quality talent (probably OF) plus prospects. Sort of why LAD with Verdugo or CINN with Senzel are in the front of the rumor mill ... immediate OF help with 5-6 years control. Padres lead with a AA pitching prospect doesn’t make the cut.

Quote from fenn68 on December 23, 2019, 1:58 pmSaw some commentary about the number of teams that still are in the hunt for SP ... the top shelf arms as FA are gone with the signing of Ryu (think the next pack is headlined by Cashner ... enough said) and any quality trade target will cost a lot in prospects (if the team has them) and/or take a big contract (see Price).
I guess this sort of depends on how Preller views Quantrill and the readiness of the coming attractions BUT could this be an opportune time to deal Lucchesi (4 years control, league minimum, healthy, and an ERA in the low 4s with upside). Should have some takers especially for a contender (in their mind) that needs to stretch out the bottom of their rotation. Plus Lucchesi did put in a full season of innings.
If Preller is looking to 2021 beyond ... if he gets a quality return starting even in 2021 it may be worth the move. An LAA discussion big need for SP ... a pretty filled payroll ... and not a deep farm system (and not trading their only Top 100 prospect in Adell). Brought me back to the potential availability of Marsh who has upside for all three OF slots and a decent bat ... might be better than either Grisham or Trammell (especially in CF / RF). Add the LAA needs a C ... maybe Lucchesi gets the deal done but if they wanted Hedges added ... works for me.
I am sure other teams could be in play too for Lucchesi ... best return is probably a high ceiling prospect which if fine.

I totally agree, especially after listening to Spilboroughs and Morosi on XM today and talking specifically about the LAA. They are in need of a TOR (same as most teams), but are even desperate for innings. Luchessi or Quantrill fill that bill immediately for LAA. If I were either LAA or SD, I would pull the trigger on a Luchessi/Hedges for Marsh deal in a heartbeat. COF are easier to fill than SP. SD has plenty of options to fill the spot of Luchessi, and strong RF candidate in Marsh would fill a need for SD. You could start him in AAA, and he would be ready in case of a Myers injury/or lack of performance, or better yet, a Myers trade.

I keep saying that the market has changed. Would anyone 2 years ago have believed that Lindor, Betts, Bryant, Clevinger, Arenado and Price would all be available for trade for the right price this offseason? Everyone wants to do what we did a few years ago, trade productive guys with little control for lots of specs. Even if only a few of them work out, you have them for 6 YEARS! Nobody wants to trade away the next Glasnow, Moncada, Meadows or Tatis. I doubt any of those guys like Lindor will be traded. If they are, they will be for nothing close to the Lux and May+ that is being asked for. Guy like Verdugo and Senzel, who are essentially free for the next 3 years and have 3 more years of control after that, have far more value than guys like Lindor. Lindor will cost $50 million for the next 2 years. You might as well sign an expensive free agent and keep the specs.

There’s no way they aren’t expecting to win now.
Otherwise they would have gone for someone with more control.
Agree Mr. P! I highly doubt the Padres traded for a 32 year old OF with 2 years of control and signed a 31 year old reliever to a big money contract without expecting to win in 2020. Speaking of big money I doubt ownership signed off on almost 450 million dollars in commitments to two players the previous two seasons while viewing 2020 as a “development year”. Teams can win while developing young talent. Look at the Astros as an example. They added expensive proven talent to mix with young talented guys they were developing. I’d say the results have worked out pretty well for them.

Quote from JasonE135 on December 23, 2019, 8:14 pmOf course they are trying to win. Their earnings depend on them supplying a quality product. The only question is how far can they move up in 1 year? How many games behind the Dodgers were we? We will have to get by them to get to the World Series. I don’t see us doing that this year. Can we get to the playoffs this year? Possibly. We have definitely improved. It will take us a couple more years to truly be able to run with the big dogs, if we are lucky.

Padres xould lead with MLB P Joey + Baez + Q + Bokanos if they go after Clevenger.. They can also offer up MLB ready C Torrens/Hedges.. OF Franchy /Naylor/Margot / Myers .. IF Garcia/France/Miller/Cronesworth or specs like Campusano /Hunt/Trammell/ Ornelas/Potts/Ona/Olivares/Patino/Morejon / Weather's/etc.. Lindor: Gore and Campusano
Clevenger: Patino and Abrams
That might get the Indians attention and consider giving up the playoffs in 2020-21 by dealing Lindor and Clevenger.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 24, 2019, 5:31 amDepending on health, would a SF/SD trade work? Two possibilities.
Myers and Lawson for Cueto. Myers is owed $61M± and Cueto is owed $48.6M±. SF is paying $12M for Lawson.
or
Myers, Quantrill, Arias, and another mid level prospect for Samardzija. Samardzija is owed $19.8M. SF is paying $42M for 3 prospects. Samardzija is FA after this season, so it opens the books for a good run at another FA/trade for the 2021 season. Samardzija did have a decent season, 181 innings with a 1.108 WHIP.
