Trade ideas

I’d definitely be in favor of gambling on Kluber. I’d imagine Kluber could be acquired without involving the top prospects. I feel like the Lindor, Bumgarner rumors is simply AJP driving the price up on division foes. I’ll be surprised if Giants ownership doesn’t force Zaidi to resign Bumgarner. If Giants ownership is dead set on brining MadBum back it doesn’t hurt for the Dodgers and Padres to drive the price up. I’m sure AJP doesn’t like the idea of Lindor in Dodger blue, might as well check in and see if you can throw a wrench in the deal by increasing the competitions cost.

Kluber would be a HUGE get at this point! Wouldn't cost a great deal, very manageable contract, mentor to the young guns( Gore, Patino, Weathers, Lucceshi, Quantril, Morejon, Baez).

Who would it cost? Would they take Hedges, plus others?

Kluber is going to the Rangers

Kluber is going to the Rangers

DeShields (CF) ... veteran with 2 years control ($2.4MM)

Clase (RP) ... rookie with 6 years control (former Padre farmhand)

Plus the big key .... Rangers take the full Kluber contract. Net the Indians save $15MM this year and have zero pressure (financially) to move Lindor, etc.

Sort of like the Padres giving Margot, Munoz, and taking the full contract (and that was likely the biggest roadblock).

Wonder what we offered.  This development likely puts the Indians in a better bargaining position with the Dodgers though, which is a positive.  If the Dodgers get Lindor, I really hope they have to send at minimum May and Lux.

Yeah AJP probably offered something like Naylor + Baez + Nix... The Ranger offer was like Munoz + Margot.. AJP said no thanks... And I don't blame him since he can sign a similar FA ($$ and age wise) in Ryu but probably for an extra yr.. Still no specs attached to Ryu

I honestly don't think AJP had the authority to assume the entirety of the contract.  I think he may have another 5-10mil max if he really believes in a move prior to a Myers dump.

Given what is available, I don't want us to pick up a SP over 15m/year. I think we need flexibility so we can make that "big move" when it is right and the opportunity is there -- whatever form it may be.

Guessing it was the money ... Indians highly motivated to move all the contract ... Padres probably wanted them to eat some or wanted them to wait until Myers’ contract was unloaded to someone else so SD could assume the entire Kluber contract.

Padres have enough to mix and match prospects to comfortably give them a better player return ... but money is money.

Can’t be sure but this might signal that the critical path for new “costly” adds is the divestiture of Myers / Hedges contracts.

I think not getting Kluber is going to be a move that we wished SD had made. Even if we didnt move Myers, with Kluber, our payroll would have been about $155M. Plus, in 2021, with the departure of Oliveras, Kinsler, and Richards, the money would have been even in 2021.

IMO big miss AJP!

Considering I doubted they had the space to go over $130MM in 2020 .... where they are now is a strong commitment. Another $15MM just probably is too much for a team that needs a lot of thing to fall right to even contend (.500 more likely)  ... especially if they have aim on Marte or any other offensive upgrade as a priority. Save the “next step” until they are clearly in play for wild card contention and target the greatest need.

As for next year ... big money coming off but they will have quite a few upward pressures with the current players: Arb 3 decision on Pham, Davies, and Hedges ... Arb 2 decisions on Lamet and Margot .... Lucchesi hit Arb 1 ... plus a few others. That alone could add up to a plus $15MM. Then an extension for Yates will add a lot to his AAV given the cost of elite RP. Plus Profar is a FA ... has to be replaced.

Still think the critical path is moving Myers / Hedges’ contracts first.
