Trade ideas
Quote from BoosterSD on December 13, 2019, 9:13 pmHow about this for a chain of thoughts. MIL has potential holes at LF/1B, SS(despite what they think about Urias), and 3B, a declining CF, and holes all through the rotation. And according to Bleacher Report, the 29th ranked farm system in baseball. If they are serious about trading Hader, shouldnt they just do a larger rebuild.? Doesnt seem smart to only partly tear it down, with so many holes?
With that in mind, would you rather spend Patino, Baez, Hunt, and Ashbeck on Lindor or Yelich. I realize that neither are going to get traded, so it really doesnt matter, other than a curiosity. I think Yelich is the much better option. Plays a position where we dont have to have our best player move spots and is cheaper and under control longer than Lindor.

They don’t owe him anything. Keep Tatis happy. If Tatis has ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM moving to 2B or RF then do that. ONLY if he is totally all right with it.
No I wouldn’t make that trade if the second Luis is Campusano. I figured that was a mistake.
Sounds like a nightmare situation with a top 15 player in baseball as he's about to hit FA. Good luck if he doesn't sign off.

I would go with Yelich personally. I mean, I have him as the #2 player in baseball after Trout. Better BA, OBP, more power and just as much speed as Lindor. Of course all of that plus the extra control would make him much more expensive than Lindor. I don’t think we could realistically afford either one without totally screwing the team’s future.

Nah is Lindor.... I mean we are in on Whit .. Why not Lindor/Altuve or McNeil .. All elite middle IF... And why not Kubler + Lindor Both are available..
Such a big deal would likely mean Hedges/Mejia back at C... And maybe a Shogo or Dickerson modest FA signing ..and thats it for 2020...

Yelich could be a nice July pickup tbh ... Make sure he is 100% back and Brew crew looking more like a small rebuild team than a contender at the moment..

Agree that is the most probable scenario ... and without any of the elite prospects included.
Doesn’t seem as any team will willing to pony up elite prospects even for better trade candidates ... and Kluber is not getting near that these days given his age, coming off injury, and a $17MM contract with only 2 years control. Cleveland has a big motivation (apparently) to escape his contract so that also reduces their return. If the Padres can take the contract ... they have the next level prospects to entice Cleveland.
Could argue that given his age and 2019 ... Kluber is maybe a $20MM pitcher on the open market ... so if a team takes his entire contract the return piece(s) don’t have to add that much.
If Cleveland really goes into rebuild ... probably best to deal Kluber, Lindor, Clevenger to different teams to get the best mix of talent and volume since not likely any team will clean out their farm system for the short term gain of a bundle of two.
Farm system is not good ... probably need to infuse offense more than pitching.
Cleveland asks for: Naylor (1B) - Trammell (CF) - Arias (SS)?
Padres offer: Naylor (1B) - J.Rosario (CF) - Miller (SS)?

Quote from fenn68 on December 14, 2019, 7:02 amRandom notes from Heyman and others are suggesting the Padres are “interested in” Kuechel, Bumgarner, Kluber, and the Korean Kim. (Of course Preller is interested in everyone ... for the right price). Veteran TOR (sort of still) fits I guess and opens up both Lucchesi and Quantrill for trade or the pen. Each is “different” in current profile and likely cost:
1. Bumgarner: FA and probably the costliest .... 4-5 years / $100-125MM given the current market for SP; big reputation especially in playoffs but lost a bit during regular season performance in 2019 plus 4-5 year commitment is risky.
2. Kuechel: FA and looking to be cheaper than Bumgarner (years and AAV) and might benefit from a strong INF defense given his ground ball profile ... but similar questions about his ability to sustain top level performance ... could go 3 years / $60MM.
3. Kluber: covered the pluses and minuses in the trade dialogue ... 2 years / $36MM BUT need to add prospects in a deal to secure him.
4. Kim: NOT young Korean (31) ... question as him being a ML starter or reliever ... seeing a 3 year contract with unknown AAV. No one thinks he is a TOR option.
5. Lucchesi / Quantrill: stay the course and make the low cost upside play for 2020 and bid your time for the emergence of Gore / Patino / Morejon as TOR SP starting in 2021 and for the following 5 years.
I guess I like the options in reverse order and save resources (money / prospects) to deploy when closer to being a certain contender. Not sure that adding any of #1-3 does enough in 2020 to get them into the wild card ... closer but not there given all the other “if” conditions surrounding the roster.

Because we are in on Merrifield does not automatically mean we are in on Lindor.
One team is in total rebuild...the other the favorite to win their division...so totally different needs on the return. One player is a very low cost versatile 2b......the other is a high cost(arb dollars) who would move our best player out of position. It’s not impossible they’ve discussed Lindor.....but it is highly improbable that we will swing that deal.
Was most likely a serious discussion on Kluber and a “by the way what would it take to get Lindor” comment while on the phone.
Then Twitter goes wild and it’s already a done deal.
lol

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 14, 2019, 1:29 pmI’m thinking it was like this.
Preller went to the Dealership looking to trade for a new Camaro.
Perfectly intent on getting that beautiful sports car.
But while he was there it didn’t hurt to at least ask the Sales Manager...”Hey,how much is that bright yellow Corvette Z06 over there”.
Then when he’s told he gets that Camaro and still goes home happy.
So let’s get that sports car(Kluber) AJ.....just don’t give up Patino to get it!
