Trade Deadline
Quote from WindsorUK on August 1, 2026, 11:30 pmOh absolutely!
I have no idea why we( or any other team) hasn't tried to farm their personnel, to gleen what it is that makes their minor league programs so successful.
It can't just be Friedman, can it?
But I'd imagine if every team in the league had the same pool of money to spend, things would be a lot different.

They also scout and develop players extremely well. Zyhir Hope had played in 11 games at the complex level when they acquired him. River Ryan had not yet pitched as a professional. They turned them into very good prospects.
Not that long ago could have said that about the Padres ... traded for Tatis while in the DSL ... drafted Ryan in the latter rounds. Padres had one of the top farm systems.
Preller used them all as trade chips and while many focus on Abrams, Wood, Gore ... he leveraged the likes of Lesko, Marsee, Pauley, Bergert, etc. into better pieces for the ML team.
No idea if the three prospects the Tigers received are going to be impact ML but the Tigers were going for "something" for 2 months of Skubal and on paper this set seemed best to them. Maybe on the other side the LAD who did not "need" Skubal were willing to deal these prospects because they were not as sold as the ranking would suggest?
But do give the LAD credit for the scouting to get players who create this environment.

Pretty sure all teams have the sense of what makes a farm system successful:
- funding scouting / development departments
- hiring quality scouts / instructors (and retaining them) ...note that is easy to say ...hard to do if not already there ... not all that many quality options
Actually a successful team such as the LAD have less money to deploy to add players via the draft / international FA the way the system is structured. (the money comes in at the ML level for FA and retaining quality players).

Quote from Randy Manese on August 2, 2026, 6:49 amPadres likely to get Taylor and Andujar back in the next couple of weeks. Even if a decent hitter was available who is better than either one of the two, their limited trade chips would have to have them gamble on pitching vice hitting, so don't see them moving France or a similar minor league package like last year to get Laureano and O'Hearn. Rengifo has given them solid production while Croney, Campy and Fermin have propped up the order and allowed the slow return to normalcy of Tatis, Machado and Merrill. Since the loss of Laureano, this may be the best offense (with Taylor and Andujar coming back healthy) that the Padres have had on the field and if they can consistently produce similar to the last 2 weeks or so, they will be a team nobody wants to face in the latter part of a game.
It would be very tough to deal a RP from the bullpen but there is very little player capital elsewhere to land a decent starter that could give them 5-6 quality innings consistently. Even if you got back 2 of the 3 of Pivetta, Musgrove and Giolito are you really going to expect that kind of stamina and effectiveness after a rehab appearance or two. I can see two of them piggy-backing for 6 to 7 innings, which would help soften the loss of a RH bullpen arm in the short run plus Adam could be back by mid-August; therefore, I see Estrada in play. On the LH side, while we would love to deal Peralta or Matsui, the return for them would not be great - we would have to include a top prospect just to get a bottom tier SP that no other contender is willing to pay the price for.
Morejon is an enigma because you see that potential the Padres saw way back in 2016 when they paid him a huge bonus only to see him suffer injuries year after year. He wants to stay with the Padres and the Padres should do all they can to keep him but is he an injury waiting to happen? Would he be willing to resign? Would he be willing to convert to starting? I'm guessing that only if the price is right, and it should be a fairly high one, would the Padres part with Morejon. New ownership needs to resign him and Laureano as their first moves to solidify the team in 2027. And yes, if I had to make the choice, I would sign Laureano over France but certainly would like to keep both.
About 27 more hours to go before the trade deadline. Don't expect anything until the last few hours if a trade is made. Expect every minor leaguer to be in play, including Salas, Mayfield, Schoolcraft, Wideman, Harvey and even Borthwick.

I think it's more a case of The Dodgers not having room for all of their prospects at the major league level. Hope was part of a AA outfield where he was the lowest ranked prospect at #25 overall in the MLB top 100. They still have 5 outfielders on the list after the trade. With Teoscar Hernandez and Kyle Tucker signed through next season and Andy Pages currently in his final pre-arbitration year it's going to be hard for any outfield prospect to break in with them in the short term. Same goes for their rotation.

Agree ... made it easier to deal the high ranked prospects when they are effectively blocked at the ML level.

Quote from fenn68 on August 2, 2026, 11:17 amMets trade Freddie Peralta to TB for TB's #15, #26, and #27 prospects ... that seem low but might suggest few teams saw a rebound in performance likely.
Ripple effect ... with TB/NYY/Bost all "close" for AL East ... will this deal motivate the other two to push a bit harder for trades? Thinking the rumors on Morejon to the NYY.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 2, 2026, 2:09 pmI definitely do not want to trade Morejon. We need MORE good players, not less. And I certainly believe Adrian will give SD every chance to re-sign him.
Kid loves it here. We need him back.

Would I like Morejon to stay and re-sign ... sure
Would the Padres want Morejon back ... sure
Would Morejon want to come back ... sure
What messes that up is money. Given how the national media seems to rank Morejon as the top LHRP (maybe any RP) available this winter .... and given his age (27-28) ... he will get as a FA at least a 3 year pact at $15MM per year (maybe more).
Padres are not going to pay that much for a RP when ... if they have the money ... it will go for SP and LF/1B/DH bats to build a more complete roster after all the offensive FA depart and with a void at SP.
Padres need support at SP now ... if they can leverage Morejon to a SP that is around for more than 2026 it could help them win now and in the future . So ... depending on the player ... trade Morejon for a better 2026.
Now they might avoid that trade if they can land the SP via a different trade ... Mayfield - Schoolcraft - Mendez for ? (few will like that either).

Quote from fenn68 on August 2, 2026, 3:11 pmIn structuring moves ... if thinking about the future at the same time ... beyond Morejon a FA ... offense loses France, Andujar, Laureano, Rengifo and maybe Sheets (if CBA goes to 5 year control limit) plus Buehler, Marquez, Canning, Giolito. Plus the unknown of the opt out. Yes, most are not great but they are very low cost ... replacement (better ones) will be more expensive.
If you want France to re-sign ... not going to be for another $1MM deal. Plus big built in increases for Manny and Tatis.
Have to look at the big picture in building a team ... not just one player ... and make tough choices.
