According to MLBTR two SPs have been scratched from their starts tonight to avoid the possibility of injury prior to the trade deadline, both Mize of DET and Peralta of NYM. Of course, SD had scouts at Peralta's last start, so.......

Gimme Mize over Peralta

With most of the SD big players seeming to be bouncing back in the last 45 days or so, and Salas being promoted to AAA, could Preller live with a Duran/Fermin combo behind the plate and offer up Campusano to fill some of the pitching void?

I know that NYY are looking for a catcher and bullpen help. Could Campusano/Peralta net a controllable SP for SD?

I have seen reports that NYY do want a RH bat along with a high leverage reliever.

Was thinking France but we need him if we aren't giving up on this season.

As far as Campy.... I am looking forward to a Salas/Campy Catching tandem next year...so trade them Fermin if you can get them to take him.

I would not trade either Campusano or Fermin just to get rid of them ... need to get offsetting help for 2026. Otherwise, wait until next winter to make the call ... after the Padres assess their needs post FA departures.

With pending FA of France, Andujar, and Laureano there is a cost effective scenario that lands Campusano at 1B/DH since he is the weakest defensive option and have Salas / Fermin be the primary catching duo ... they both are vastly better defensively than Campusano. So far in 2026 Campusano is showing decent offense ... might want that preserved until a better option is secured. Side ... in the past month ... Fermin is actually hitting.

If they keep Campusano for a DH/1B role ... Padres can focus on LF as their primary offense upgrade.

Simply trade a catcher only if an immediate upgrade in 2026.

Dennis Lin says Mayfield is dealing with a hamstring issue.

Anyone prefer Clay Holmes over Freddy Peralta from the Muts?

Anyone prefer Clay Holmes over Freddy Peralta from the Muts?

Is Holmes back to form? He has been on the IL since May ... I understand he had a good rehab sessions but Mets have yet to activate him. After that layoff can ge go deep into games effectively? He was very effective before his injury.

Price tag on both? Different gambles ... can Peralta rebound with a new environment vs can Holmes rebound from a broken tibia ... now not in a month?

This will change as trades are finalized but for now Mets are asking for a fringe Top 100 prospect plus. Both are in demand apparently even as rentals.

If healthy prefer Holmes in 2026 ... but also will cost more than Peralta and not sure the Padres have the trade chips. Is Mayfield enough?

What is a challenge for Preller is which arm will pitch better for the next 10 starts (every one is important) ... so part of his valuation is will they hit the mound running ASAP along with being effective. Trading for 10 quality starts is different from trading for 5-6 quality starts. Probably changes the value of the trade chips he puts in the deal.

Also, let us assume the SP out is Canning with an ERA over 6 and not going deep into games. So, at some level almost all the trade options will be an upgrade. Then how does Preller value the difference between two trade options if both are likely 5-6 inning arms but one is a 4.30 ERA and the other a 3.80 ERA projection vs the trade chips needed to get either. How much value is imputed in that 0.50 difference in ERA given the bullpen and offense? Does the "better" pitcher materially improve the chances for the playoffs?

A case can be made that not trading for the best pitcher is OK ... considering the rest of the team ... considering the alternative ... and consider the cost of each.

A lot of national writers have toss in a lot of trade ideas with the NYY landing Miller for ... well, totally unrealistic packages. They also have said some interest in Morejon.

In all that they use the names of Weathers and Warren ... both currently starting for NYY but on the bubble as Rodon is nearing return and maybe even Schmidt returns in Aug.  Was on the surface not interested in either BUT now ... maybe. Clearly not for Miller but maybe a deal centering around Morejon?

Weathers (2 more years of control) and Warren (4 more years of control) are both low cost and are around 4.00 ERA ... made 20+ starts this season going 5-6 inning average. They actually fit a Preller objective.

Morejon is outstanding but a FA after the season ... the Padres pen is strong ... would the addition of a SP who pitchers 5-6 innings with a 4.00 ERA more than offset the loss of Morejon in 2026 while providing value for years to come?

Note that Morejon is getting national praise as maybe the best RP available (not just LH) and should get a mega contract as a FA ... likely out of the Padres range given other priorities. So should demand a premium return.

Side comment was keep him ... make a QO that will likely be rejected ... get a Comp pick but given the team is over the luxury threshold that pick is around the 4th round (not compelling).

Maybe? ... NYY dealing from "strength" and Padres dealing from "strength" without impacting the farm? Also leaves the door open for the Padres to deal from the farm for another 2026 upgrade.

Is the potential of 10 quality starts greater than 20-25 relief appearances in the 8th inning?
