Trade Deadline
Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2026, 2:32 amNow with PITT, MIA, STL, and WASH all losing and at 55 losses ... one loss more than SD ... and AZ, PHIL in the last two WC slots with 52 losses ... two losses less than SD ... that creates a seven team battle for two slots where in the end one win/loss can make the difference.over then next 51 games.
So, even if the Padres add an "average" SP (e.g. 4.30 ERA, 5-6 innings per start) and that displaces a current SP who is in the 6.00+ range and not going deep into games (taxing the pen) ... and have that upgrade for the final 10 starts ... should win you a couple of more games and that might just be enough to win a playoff slot.
Sure, want better upgrade but would not pass on just an upgrade for the "extra" win.
Do think the window is closing on the Padres after 2026 for some time with: a poor near term farm system, abundant FA departures, a probable lockout in 2027, and an aging roster that will be worse when (if) the prospects in the lower levels arrive.
If Preller views it that way ... and we know he has never shied away from dealing prospects ... we might just see more prospects traded for a "better" return and shoot for the last hurrah in the 2026 playoffs.

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2026, 2:45 amApparently both Pivetta and Musgrove threw two innings simulations on WED ... no word on how they recovered. If everything went well (big IF), given the time off, the might be ready by the end of AUG ... but no idea how competitive.
However, if Preller believes one (or both) can return to upper rotation performance by the Playoffs that would go a long way to suggest the Padres could progress in the Playoffs. So, Preller could deal for just enough upgrade to get those extra regular season wins with the object to make the playoffs. That might mean a couple of "average" adds (players the Padres have the prospects to acquire) ...
Of course, if Preller can land that better upgrade he would.

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2026, 2:56 amReport Padres had scouts on Peralta (METS) ... rental ... so should not take too much to acquire since has not been good this season. Following my previous logic a mediocre Peralta who goes deep into games can be that upgrade over what they have and win the Padres that extra game or two ... and make the playoffs.
Maybe getting out of NY might help Peralta and even if a short time working with Niebla might correct some current flaws ... he was a very effective pitcher for years prior to 2026 and only 30 so a realistic chance of a turnaround in a new environment. Gamble to be sure but a 2025 Peralta is upper rotation quality.

Its very possible that he just could not handle the day in and day media circus of NYC. Not everyone is able too. He did very well in MIL, and with SD being more like MIL media wise, it could be a good spot for him here in SD, not to mention the Niebla effect as well.

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2026, 8:16 amBased on recent reports ... it is possible (likely) the following arms will return by late Aug early Sept: Pivetta, Musgrove, Giolito, Adam, and Morgan. There is a 13 pitcher limit so that creates some interesting decisions even if Preller does not add to the staff.
Morgan can be assigned to the minors ... then some limited options out of the incumbent 13 ... Sears can be optioned and so can Rodriguez - Hart - Estrada but are those the ones you want to send to take off the 26 man. Drop RP for "excess" starters who will be used in relief?
Now if Preller adds at the deadline one or two SP ... the plot thickens ... and if adding a rental (mid lower type) is he only getting a 1 month rental until the injured return? Does that impact what Preller would pay for that rental.
Clearly Canning and Marquez will be, at some point, on the bubble for DFA.
so, basically, a lot of dominoes to fall if Preller adds at the deadline.

Quote from BoosterSD on July 31, 2026, 9:27 amWith most of the SD big players seeming to be bouncing back in the last 45 days or so, and Salas being promoted to AAA, could Preller live with a Duran/Fermin combo behind the plate and offer up Campusano to fill some of the pitching void?
I know that NYY are looking for a catcher and bullpen help. Could Campusano/Peralta net a controllable SP for SD?

Yes and No.
I do think Padres would be OK with Fermin / Duran (and Hunt as back-up in AAA) for now.
Just don't think Campusano (even with Peralta) would get much in return except a mid-level prospect or two ... not likely much to help in 2026. Might be useful as a "second piece" in a deal with a better first piece for a better return. Might get a useful prospect to flip in a second deal. At this point no issue with dealing Campusano if he somehow yields an upgrade to the 2026 team.
