Trade Deadline
Quote from fenn68 on July 29, 2026, 1:01 pmThe plot thickens after three teams in the playoff hunt played already:
PHIL lost and AZ won ... both are now 57-52 in the #2 and #3 wild card slots.
AZ beat PITT giving PITT 54 losses and now one behind SD.
Tight? PHIL/AZ (52 loses in two wild card slots) ... PADRES / WASH (53 loses only one game out) ... MIA/PITT/STL (54 losses only 2 games out). Seven teams within 2 games of each other ... has to make those seven GM stressed!

They have three young starters who are ready now...LaGrange,Rodriguez and Warren .
So it "could" be for a guy who can start now.
Warren doesn't do much for me but.....
I'd feel better about any of those three right now than Canning and probably Marquez.
Rodriguez probably better than Canning but enough "better" to offset the loss of end of game LHRP (Morejon) and the starting 1B (France)? Probably not right now.
I am getting more comfortable with a three team trade with the Padres getting prospects and flipping them (maybe with a Padres prospect) to another team for an established mid to upper rotation SP with extended control. Detmers from LAA?

Quote from fenn68 on July 29, 2026, 1:17 pmPadres 40 man is now down to 38. So, some room for an add at the deadline without giving up a 40 man roster player. Also can (at some point) activate Pivetta off the 60 day IL without an offsetting move.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 30, 2026, 7:07 amDennis Lin's latest says the team is scouting starting pitching at all levels. He mentions Kevin Gausman and Freddy Peralta as guys they have scouted. He also says they're looking for a left handed outfielder with Jake McCarthy, Mickey Moniak and Isaac Collins as potential targets. Kevin Acee says that they could potentially target another backend reliever as well.

Gausman and Peralta are "rentals" and actually not pitching well all season ... worse in the past 30 days. I guess their plus is both seem to be able to go 5+ inning somewhat consistently ... albeit with recent ERA over 5.
Peralta (recently worse of the two) would be owed only about $2-3MM and as a rental probably only cost a non impact propsect. Gausman will be owed about $8MM so maybe will require some salary to be eaten by TOR to get even a mediocre prospect.
I guess both are better than Canning and Marquez (but not by much except for the innings) showed so far. If Preller can't land better ... I guess one would be an upgrade if he does not cost too much.

On McCarthy (2 year control), Moniak (1 year control) , and Collins (4 year control) ... all have low salaries so that is a plus. Opposing that is that all are below average hitters AWAY from their home parks ... still would be an upgrade from Bowen and might provide LHH insurance if Sheets continues his deep slump.
Given salaries and control ... but not sure on other teams' interest ... might cost a bit more in prospect capital.
Given a need and little in house for 2027 ... makes some sense for the right price ... at least for depth.

Moniak is strictly a platoon bat. He still hits right handed pitching well away from Coors. McCarthy's splits are interesting this year. He's hitting lefties well and he's handling right handed pitching at home. He's been struggling with right handed pitching on the road. His splits have typically been even. His track record is a little inconsistent though. Collins was much better on the road last year and looked like he had a chance to be an everyday player. This year he's been much better at home and looks like more of a platoon guy. With a short amount of time in the big leagues he's harder to assess.

Depending on the cost. one of
- Reid Detmers (LAA) decent with 2 years control
- Emerson Hancock (SEA) 4 years control
- Robbie Ray (SF) is a rental
All are apparently available ... for the right price ... but not sure the Padres have the assets to meet that price. Remember other teams are also in the mix and multi-year control ups the value.
For that level of quality (mid-rotation tops) ... Preller may need to make a 3 way deal getting pieces that the sellers want.
