Trade Deadline

PreviousPage 3 of 16Next

Did see in MLBTR piece on top 50 trade candidates (Miller NOT listed) they did include Morejon and France ... seems their criteria is "probability" of being moved.

On Morejon, they said he was the BEST RP available and could yield a near Top 100 type prospect even as a rental ... the market demand is there.

On France, suggested although a good season (but a rental) would not get much of a return. For me, if that is so ... Padres need him more than a mediocre return. He is one of the Padres top hitters and the alternative 1B option Sheets is in a terrible slump.

Instead of a Miller deal ... maybe Preller dangles Morejon to the NYY for LaGrange (MLB #79) or Hernandez (MLB #73) with some other minor bodies moving both ways? (always could re-sign Morejon as a FA in the off season).

Neither would really do much for 2026 ... so even for that good return ... hurts the Padres playoff run ... so, long shot they move Morejon baring getting a more impactful SP for 2026 with control.

I would not be surprised if in the "minor move" category Preller added a bat ... preferably a LF option. Renfigo (and Taylor before him) have really over performed their past performance levels ... Bowen just has shown no ability to hit ML pitching ... Sheets is in a major 30 day swoon with a wRC+ around 50 and no power. Andujar should return but not a LF candidate and how well will he be after the layoff with a broken wrist?

Bowen and Duran have options ... so a return of Andujar and an added bat might cover Sheets and any reliance on the over performers.

Probably only need a fringe prospect if the add is a rental.

This was my thinking....reports say SD Scouts are at all Yankee minor league levels as we speak.

I've also seen it reported they want/need a RH bat (Judge,Stanton on DL)

So maybe a Morejon/France deal for SP?

Saw that report on scouting the NYY system ... can make a lot of assumptions on the circumstances that would lead to a trade of some type.

Hard to see Preller doing a trade of two "rentals" who both are key for the Padres playoff push for "prospects" UNLESS it is one of those immediately flip those prospects for ML pieces that help more in 2026 than Morejon / France. IE a 3 team trade.

Priority one for Preller is win in 2026 then secondly think of the future.

Also can potentially look at a deal using an Estrada or similar for a lesser deal considering as RP get healthy there is a pure log jam for the ML roster. That would make sense if the Padres are looking at the lower levels of the NYY system. Estrada is good ... low cost ... long control but not the arm that would yield a ML ready "quality" prospect. This is where the long term plan enters for Preller and he opts for "high upside" in a prospect at the lower levels. I guess Peralta, Matsui, or Hart could be in play.

Of course could just be do diligence if the NYY are really pressing for a deal and Preller might deal IF the Padres fold or can't find a more overwhelming deal from another team for the NYY target OR for a different player. Simply if RP trade A or B ... decision is on the best return least harm to 2026 chances.

Things should heat up Friday and really get going before Monday. At this point a lot of buyers few sellers (few quality players) ... if a teams want their target player run a major risk if they wait another team will swoop in and overpay leaving them out in the cold. Might panic and to get first in line to over pay by more for the better options.

Looks good for sellers ... not so much for buyers.

Rumor today out of NY (take that with a grain of salt):

====================================================

The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner and Jim Bowden outlined several potential Yankees trade proposals that the team could consider. One proposed deal has the Yankees land San Diego Padres relief pitcher Adrian Morejon.

New York parts ways with a pair of former touted pitching prospects in Elmer Rodríguez and Bryce Cunningham who head to San Diego as part of the deal.

Morejon does not solve all of the Yankees’ issues, but the move at least bolsters their bullpen. MLB.com ranks Rodriguez as the Yankees’ No. 3 ranked prospect with Cunningham coming in at No. 9 in 2026.

=====================================

Keeping in mind that Morejon is just a "rental" ... probably not a bad return IF the Padres see the upsides in these guys. Rodriguez is a MLB #23 and young but some are not seeing much beyond a bottom of the rotation arm and has not shown well in his few ML starts. What does Preller see? Plus can they cover the loss of Morejon?

Rumor is just a rumor!

Keeping on the NYY theme ... apparently the reports are that Preller is interested in Dax Kirby and 19 year old LHH in A ball (MLB #58) ... a plus hitter who likely ends up in the OF (or 2B) ... has speed. Note: every report is that Lombard is untouchable.

No idea the package to the NYY gets Kirby included but just interesting Preller's interest ... Kirby would be the prime piece in any return. Again maybe a flip situation of a 2026+ SP?

Estrada has been activated and Waldron has been DFA'd, according to MLBTR.

If Marinaccio got some team to claim him and give international pool money .... we might see the same for Waldron.

If AJ trades 2026 assets for a A Ball pitcher that should tell us he isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

If he was worried about his future seems he'd be trading for someone that can help now....or at least sooner.

"Hard to see Preller doing a trade of two "rentals" who both are key for the Padres playoff push for "prospects" "

They have three young starters who are ready now...LaGrange,Rodriguez and Warren .

So it "could" be for a guy who can start now.

Warren doesn't do much for me but.....

I'd feel better about any of those three right now than Canning and probably Marquez.
