Trade Deadline
Quote from TucsonClip on July 30, 2025, 12:55 pmQuote from fenn68 on July 30, 2025, 12:27 pmHave to assume multiple adds with some (if not all) having control in 2026. IF in that process the Padres add two legit hitters both LF ... could the Padres deal Sheets to balance the deal. He is having a fine season, low cost, two more years control but somewhat limited defensively yet would provide some cheap offset to the player they trade.
Clearly Shildt likes to uses the DH as a "rest" zone for starters ... so changing out Sheets to make room for two more versatile OF who will cover both LF and DH (on a rotation basis with all the OF ... and all the INF with Iglesias).
In the never ending use of IF ... here is a scenario that has virtually no chance of playing out. IF the Padres believe in their bullpen remaining the best in MLB, King will return to top form by SEP, Darvish will return to top form in AUG, Cease will return to his 2nd half 2024 form ... then could the Padres go really blockbuster and trade Pivetta who is controlled in 2026 for a top tier bat? Pivetta has the stats and is really cheap in 2025 but his salary jumps for $4MM to $20MM next season (so some financial incentive beyond the player return for the Padres).
Pivetta for Duran might make sense for Boston
Not going to happen but ...
Interesting alternative way to look at it. Not sure Piveta is actually our "Ace" in the postseason, meanwhile Cease has not been our "Ace" in the regular season, and also wasn't great last fall.
Id imagine we have more luck moving Suarez in a package for a bat, and then deal from the prospects to back till the 7th or 8th for LRP, moving Morejon to closer?
That seems logical, keeps depth at SP, and bets on or SP covering us.

Quote from ultratvfan on July 30, 2025, 4:01 pmCincinnati acquired third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes from the Pirates for lefty reliever Taylor Rogers, shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura and cash considerations. His twin brother Giants reliever Tyler Rogers was traded to the Mets.
Cardinals Closer Ryan Helsley traded to Mets.

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2025, 2:45 amI find the rumored "interest" by Preller in A's closer Mason Miller intriguing. He is 27, league minimum, under control through 2029 with a 100MPH+ FB ... and is good. He would come at a high cost prospect-wise.
Not the highest priority to spend some of the team's better prospects on but if Preller cannot land a high profile bat for those prospects ... Miller would make it much easier to part with Suarez (and his contract) or just make the pen that much deeper in 2025. Did note that the Padres would consider converting him back to SP as they have done with Lugo, King, Kolek (probably next season).
Or they could flip him ... say to Boston for Duran who rumors have it that Preller is still in hot pursuit to acquire.
Either way Preller rumors suggest he is trying to go "big" on a deal ... the clock is ticking!

I would not be surprised to see Miller in a SD uni after today. I can see a scenario where Cease is traded to HOU, Suarez to NYY, and SD ends up with Miller, Goldschmidt, and Escarra. And somehow in that scenario, I think that either Duran or Kwan ends up in LF with Goldy and Sheets split 1B and DH duties.
While you have mentioned that Escarra is not a great BA guy, one that has stuck out his entire career, he is a good OBP guy. A career .362 OBP and walks about as much he strikes out.
I think its possible that Preller may ship out Arraez today as well. He is a FA after this season, hits better away than at Petco, and would save SD some money as well.

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2025, 7:36 amKeep seeing reports that Cease is Houston's #1 target ... that is good. Looked at the prospects (that is what he would yield) and don't see anyone that realistically would near term benefit the Padres. However, the have some prospects that other teams (think A's) might like if added to some Padre prospects.
Is Preller working a 3 team deal to land Miller and ship out Cease ... and save money now and build for the future with Miller? Maybe a 3 team deal using Suarez out?
Maybe just wishful thinking on my part ... but with the tightness of the standings putting the Padres in a great position to win it all (don't get those chances too often) and the clear recognition that Machado, Bogaerts, Darvish, and Cronenworth are probably at the peaks over the next 3 years ... Preller has to be motivated to do a couple of big adds (Miller? Duran?) that have near term value (relatively cheap salaries) at the expense of top prospects that given all are in the lower minors will not help (if they help) the Padres for 4-5 years when the core of this team is old and likely not as productive.
I don't see them moving Arraez ... not sure much of a market and he provides offense for a team that needs offense. They can't make enough deals to get under the luxury tax this late in the season and he is only owed less than $5MM for the rest of the season. Different question on re-signing him in 2026 ... might depend on his ask coupled with who the Padres land in trades.

Would be a huge mistake IMO

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2025, 8:12 amThe Padres and A’s are in agreement on a trade sending star closer Mason Miller and left-hander JP Sears to San Diego, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN. Top prospect Leo De Vries headlines a four-player return for the A’s, Passan adds. They’ll also receive three yet-unnamed pitchers.

DeVries goes to OAK for Mason Miller and JP Sears. OAK also getting 3 other unnamed Pitchers according to MLBTR.
Move #1. Whats Prellers over/under on moves today?
