Trade Deadline

PreviousPage 8 of 21Next

Being always suspicious of unexpected actions ... consider Nett started today for SA ... went 3 innings (only 35 pitches) then was pulled after giving up  0 hits / 0 BB / 0 Runs and got 4 K.

Hmmm ... a showcase as a prelude to a trade OR Preller just got an agreement on a deal that included Nett and had to get him out of the game?

Or just innings management OR injury OR ?????? We will see.

Think the Padres are just being cautious with the number of innings they want certain pitchers to pitch by the end of the season.  Nett has already exceeded last years' total so it could just be precautionary - sort of what they are doing with Mayfield, although Mayfield did have a little tweak in his shoulder.

Pasre's All-Star closer Robert Suarez is being discussed in trades, rivals say. Suarez has $16M, 2-year player option he should decline. Padres pen is the best but they’d likely want to add another reliever if they trade Suarez. Dylan Cease also remains in many trade talks.

Saw a blurb that we are interested in LH Reliever Jo Jo Romero with Stl.

May be related to the Suarez rumors.

Trade Suarez....move Morejon to Closer...use Romero in the higher leverage LH hitter situations over Matsui and Peralta.

Those two pitch when we're behind....Romero when ahead.

????

Also reportedly interest in MIA RP Anthony Bender. Adding to strength fits Preller ... makes it easier to move Suarez (or any of the other interesting RP prospects). Think both Romero and Bender have control and are comparatively low cost.

With Preller (and all GM) always wary of the "interested in" rumors ... some of that could be mis-direction to get others to pay higher for these players (using up trade chips that might have been used on the real Padre targets) or just suggest that Preller has options in their targets thus pushing down the ask from the other team to get a deal done.

A lot of game playing at this point.

Some expectation ... across MLB ... that there will be a lot of last minute deals happening tomorrow. Might get a start on a few today.

Logical ... it was only the 3rd appearance in Jul for just a total of 7.2 innings and limited pitches. (hopefully not an arm concern).

If just innings management ... makes me wonder if Nett is a viable option for SP in 2026 ... his innings if managed this way will keep him well under 100 innings this year. That becomes relevant with the pending FA of Cease, King and the unknowns with Musgrove and Darvish' effectiveness. Following that train of thought does that in turn reduce the desire to trade Kolek or Bergert or Baez? Or would be Nett a better trade chip (now #3 Padres prospect on MLBPipeline) than an asset to keep and help next year?

I guess it depends on what the other GM's think of these guys.Preller knows which one(s) he'd rather keep....but you aren't getting a guy like Kwan without it hurting.

IF we are really in on him like I keep hearing.

I DO NOT want Kwan going to the dodgers!

Not sure we have enough to get him anyway....certainly not more than what the dodgers "can" offer....but will they is the question

This year is much different than those in the past...usually you know youre buying....or selling...in our case, this year,we're trying to not do either but stay competitive now...and also improve for 2026 in LF/C/DH.

I'd be Ok with AJ "selling the Farm" again as long as he keeps DeVries and Mayfield....and as long as the return is someone like Kwan/Duran/Abreu/Raffaela who have multiple years oof control.

Hard to get into the minds of other GM (let alone Preller's) but probably a pretty good guess that Boston will want to succeed in the playoffs in 2025 and stay in the mix in 2026. So to get any of their starters, a deal would have to have impact in 2025 and also provide support for 2026. So if Cease was the showcase add for 2025 ... probably a Bergert or Kolek next in the line then lower level prospects depanding on who is dealt.

Cleveland is even harder to figure out ... they need offense and are just out of contending for a playoff slot ... just not sure if they see themselves as a contender in 2026 if they are open to deal Kwan. If not, opens the door to clear out the farm to get him. If yes, not sure the pieces are there from the Padres. If the Padres got him ... have to think a 3 team deal is needed.

Have to assume multiple adds with some (if not all) having control in 2026. IF in that process the Padres add two legit hitters both LF ... could the Padres deal Sheets to balance the deal. He is having a fine season, low cost, two more years control but somewhat limited defensively yet would provide some cheap offset to the player they trade.

Clearly Shildt likes to uses the DH as a "rest" zone for starters ... so changing out Sheets to make room for two more versatile OF who will cover both LF and DH (on a rotation basis with all the OF ... and all the INF with Iglesias).

In the never ending use of IF ... here is a scenario that has virtually no chance of playing out. IF the Padres believe in their bullpen remaining the best in MLB, King will return to top form by SEP, Darvish will return to top form in AUG, Cease will return to his 2nd half 2024 form ... then could the Padres go really blockbuster and trade Pivetta who is controlled in 2026 for a top tier bat? Pivetta has the stats and is really cheap in 2025 but his salary jumps for $4MM to $20MM next season (so some financial incentive beyond the player return for the Padres).

Pivetta for Duran might make sense for Boston

Not going to happen but ...
