If pitching is the SD strong point to deal with another contender ... looked at which contenders are having trouble with pitching in July (want the near term  view). Two stand out:

  1. NYY are sitting #29 in RP (6.51 ERA) and #27 in SP (5.64 ERA) ... that is really ugly for any team and SHOULD make the eager to deal ... since they seem right now in a solid playoff position unless pitching sinks them the rest of the way.
  2. DET has hit the skids in July but still in a strong playoff position. #27 in RP (6.27 ERA) ... better in SP a #18 (4.33 ERA) but mainly the Skubal effect.

Not sure who they have to deal (or want to deal) that would help the Padres immediately BUT if Preller does the sell a high salary pitcher for prospects then uses that savings to buy a high priced hitter ... that could work. In the past Preller has been able to work those 3 team deals.

Want an off the wall thought ... Cease ($14MM rental) to the NYY for Goldschmidt ($12MM rental). Goldschmidt is part time with the NYY and may get less time when Judge returns. Goldschmidt is that RHH bat who is still hitting "above average" and could serve as that 9th hitter ... maybe some 1B ... DH platoon with the slumping Sheets?

NYY may be needy enough to eat some of Goldschmidt's contract too and/or throw in a prospect given that SP is harder to come by (and generally more expensive).

Could be one of a needed two adds for offensive upgrade.

What if they expanded the deal, I read on some page that SD was interested in JC Escarra. So maybe Cease, Suarez, and Campusano for Goldy and Escarra. Maybe some other additional small MiL pieces change hands to balance the deal.

No need to add to a Cease deal to get Escarra who could be the throw in as part of the base deal. Escarra is a career  MiL who can't hit and already 30. Padres could use him as AAA insurance for the next few years but that is about it.

Since I think Cease is greater value to the NYY in 2025 than Goldschmidt ... they should already pay a premium to SD. Suarez by himself should get a much better return.

The Padres are one of multiple clubs with trade interest in Marlins right-hander Anthony Bender, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.  Bender was listed 38th on MLBTR’s most recent ranking of the top 50 trade deadline candidates, and he is a controllable player who isn’t eligible for free agency until after the 2027 season.

30 year old RP ... not all that great but low cost / controlled with speculation would be that he fills a mid-inning role allowing Morejon - Adam - Estrada to move up in the sequence IF they deal Suarez to clear some payroll space. Bender is having a good season and a ground ball pitcher.

Just read on MLBTR that LAA  may make either Adell or Ward available. MLBTR suggests that LAA would look for controllable pitching in return. With Trout no longer able to patrol CF, and misplaying Adell there this season, would they take a couple of controllable SPs and maybe a Johnson or Wade to hold down CF for the balance of the year?

Adell and Ward's not that good. I'll pass.

The Padres interested in RP Anthony Bender of the Marlins. I would rather have Stowers.

Adell ... Ward ... Bender ... Stowers all could help the Padres over what they have now ... so would not rule any out of being upgrades along with others that have been mentioned before.

Same question on all ... what is the asking price and can (or will) the Padres meet that price ... or keep shifting to find one that does.

I could see Preller having the chips to land Bender without using a top prospect. Adell (2 more control years) and Ward (1 more control year) ... both relatively low cost ... would cost more in prospects but workable for Preller in my mind. Neither great but better than Brooks, Wade, or Johnson.

Stowers is in a whole different category ... league minimum salary with 4 years of control and one of the top 2025 hitters in MLB ... not sure any team has the assets to pry him from MIA. Minimum of 3 maybe 4 top prospects that MIA likes would get their interest. Gore-Abrams-Wood-Susana-Hassell like deal (a bit lighter) and the Padres don't have those assets.

Bottom line is don't out of hand reject anyone who presents an upgrade even if they are just less below average than Brooks - Wade - Johnson.

I keep seeing Stowers name but can't figure any reason Miami would trade him?

He's exactly the player they want to keep...not trade.

From Rosenthal:

Houston Astros owner Jim Crane fancies star power. San Diego Padres right-hander Dylan Cease is one of the biggest stars available on the trade market.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise, then, that Cease is at the top of the Astros’ wish list as the trade deadline nears, according to sources briefed on the team’s discussions.

The challenge for the Astros in acquiring Cease might be finding a suitable match with the Padres, who are only interested in trading the pitcher if they can improve their current major-league roster.

3 way deal? ... Houston prospects to team X and team X give something useful to SD.

However, not really impressed by their prospects ... so seems like a tough match even on a flip.

Another option is they take Cease and someone like Matsui (and his contract) for those prospects to open even more payroll space allowing the Padres to add a player with a large contract. Matsui has been struggling and Hart could do just as well as a LHRP.
