Trade Deadline

PreviousPage 19 of 21Next

I didn't realize Laureano was that blah as a hitter. I just remebered his early days in Oakland- good glove, some power.

We've set a really low bar for LF if this guy is our idea of being the missing piece to the OF for 2026.

I guess he gets the rest of this year to showcase his( diminishing) skills.

Then trade  deadline has come and gone and Cease, King and Suarez are all still here with the addition of Miller and Sears. O'Hearn and Laureano look like they have pretty  good numbers and seem to be an upgrade over Brooks and Wade. Fermin looks like an upgrade over both Diaz and Maldonaldo. But, now the Padres have too many players.

I would think to make room for O'Hearn and Lareano  both Brooks and Wade are either sent back to Triple A or DFA'd.

With the addition of C Fermin, either Diaz or Maldonado would have to go. I would think that since Maldonado is retiring after the season, he would be DFA'd.

Then, there is Miller and Sears and the eventual return of King who goes down. Marinaccio and Morgan might be optioned back to Triple A. I don't know what will happen when King returns.

This is an interesting dilemma.

Kwan not traded. The Padres did not get him, but neither did the Dodgers.

? he is having his best season with a well above average 144 wRC+ (.889 OPS) ... 2024 was also above average with a 108 wRC+ (.748 OPS).

In 2026 looking at his recent performance should expect at least average and that would be a bargain for $6.5MM.

Are there better LF ... sure ... can the Padres land them ... no for what they have to offer / pay. We are talking a bottom of the order bat ... so average is fine.

One other 26 man roster wrinkle is Cortes.

Listen to Preller's presser post deadline and he said they brought him in to start (not sure why but that is what he said) ... a lot of pitchers but not enough slots ... might need some "surprise" moves.

A thought, might he be considering a 6 man rotation to help ease King upon his return and Darvish's ramp up.

He also the sequence of moves will be determined tonight after discussions with Shildt and the timetable for the adds to arrive (all may not be here and ready to perform by tomorrow night).

Oh yes. Then there is SP Nestor Cortes. What to do with him. He will probably take Bergert/Kolek's spot.

We can all argue about which players were traded out by AJP and probably all agree that he overpaid in a few areas, but it is at least good to be a team that goes for it, instead of doing little, such as the Cubs this year, or just sells major league players for prospects each year, such as the Pirates.

Go Pads, Beat L.A. and Let's Win the Ring This Year!

Excellent point! We used to dream on subpar prospects and say in two years Kellen Kulbachi would patrol LF and hit close to .300. We would actually get a decent player through our farm and into the MLs and then trade him because he started to make some money.

Now, even though our big spending owner has past, we still have a top 10 ML payroll and we have ownership that has taken payroll to heights that many (OK all) on here thought we would never see..  Preller can rebuild within two years and keeps using prospects to get REAL ML players. We have made the playoffs or been close every year since 2020. And we are relevant in baseball every year.

I'll take this every year.

From The Athletic,

Leo De Vries might end up a superstar, a cosmic credit card bill for the Fernando Tatis Jr. trade, but it’s hard to care about that from here. Preller’s single-minded mission is to make the Padres better and do it now now now now, and that’s exactly what he’s done.— GB

Now that the deadline has passed and we know all of the moves that were made I'm ready to share some thoughts. I'll start by saying the same thing I've been saying the last few seasons which is that with how much money we have invested long term, especially in older and aging players like Darvish, Machado, Bogaerts and Cronenworth I'm not surprised to see AJ continue to push aggressively while the team is in contention. This team is in win now mode. There's no telling how many more productive years those guys are going to have. They have to keep going for it while they're producing.

Looking at the Miller trade, to me the fact that AJ was willing to trade De Vries means that he's confident that Miller will be able to transition to the rotation in 2026 and beyond. As good as he is as a reliever I don't think they make that trade planning on leaving him in the bullpen. Looking at him as a potential front line starter changes the calculus to me.

Fermin is a really solid defensive catcher and even his modest offensive production should be a big upgrade over what we've gotten most of the year. Bergert and Kolek have been good for us. I look at them more as backend/depth starters though. Sears should effectively replace one of them too.

Laureano and O'Hearn should help the lineup and bench a lot. Laureano is having a great year and looks like the new everyday guy in LF. O'Hearn could take over at 1B against right handed pitching and push Arraez to DH which should help the offense and the defense. With Sheets still in the mix we're going to have a big bar to bring off the bench every night too rather than having to use someone like Brooks.

Butterworth, Figueroa and Smith as later round college guys seem unlikely to amount to much even if they're having some success at the lower levels. Neighbors looks like he'll be in the big leagues before too long. Bateman and Hightower may ultimately be the ones who determine who "wins" this trade. They still have a long way to go.

Lockridge looks to have the ceiling of a 4th or 5th OF. The Brewers are covering all but the prorated portion of the minimum that Cortes is owed and we got a lottery ticket prospect. Probably not going to be a real impactful trade either way. If Cortes just gives us some useful innings the rest of the way I'll take it.

Wagner brings some versatility and seems like he can at least put together a solid AB against right handed pitching. He gives us some depth and could be a useful role player in the future. I don't think Valenzuela will hit enough to make it even as a #2 C.

With Miller, Sears, Fermin, Laureano and Wagner all controlled beyond this season our roster should be mostly set moving forward even with some big pieces set to hit free agency.

I would also say that while it can be jarring to see AJ trade so many prospects I try to remember that AJ's strength is as a scout. I can't be too upset when he uses that strength to support a win now team even if it hurts watching some of those guys become successful with other teams. If he gets us a ring it'll all be worth it. If he doesn't it's still been a pretty fun ride with this team the last handful of years.
