Butterworth
Neighbors
Hightower
Figueroa
Smith
Massive overpay in my opinion. This seems like one we will regret for years down the road, similar to the Soto deal.

Looks like they added about $6.6 - $7.0MM for the rest of 2025 for Laureano, O'Hearn, and Cortes ... others were league minimum so little added.
O'Hearn and Cortes will go FA along with the the others on the roster ... so not much an issue in 2026. Guessing they take Laureano's $6.5MM club option to stabilize LF / RHH.
With all the FA to be, dropping the dead money for Hosmer, and even offsetting that with some ARBs ... should enter the winter nicely under the CBT level for 2026. Should have enough to re-sign either King or Arraez.
OF: Laureano - Merrill (L) - Tatis ... Johnson (#) ... TBD
INF: Sheets (L) - Cronenworth (L) - Bogaerts - Machado ... Wagner (L) ... TBD
C: Fermin - Campusano
So position player wise only need some tinkering for the bench to support DH.
SP: Pivetta; Musgrove; Darvish; Vasquez; Sears (L) ... Waldron; Hart (L) if club option exercised ($5MM).
RP: Miller; Adam; Estrada; Morgan: Reynolds ... Hoeing; and a bunch of others
Pitching should start the winter solid ... better if they re-sign King. Still some trade chips in play
RP: Morejon (L); Matsui (L); Peralta (L) (if does not opt out) ... Cruz (L)

WAIT: and Stephen Kolek?
?
I would have thought one of Bergert/Kolek and another arm could have gotten the job done.

Quote from WindsorUK on July 31, 2025, 3:51 pmThe fact we've emptied our system, including the #3 prospect in all of baseball, for a #5 starter, a closer we expect to turn into a starter, a redundant, older player we have for 50+ games, and an okay ageing OF for, what, a year and a half?
I sure hope they have an idea for 2026 and beyond because this doesn't really look coherent, especially by holding onto our most viable assets( which hold zero value inside of 90 days...or less)

Does seem extremely steep for a platoon catcher.

That was my first thought, but then trying to be positive, maybe Preller and company see him more as a starting catcher, the Royals have Salvador Pérez, therefore Fermín can't get more chances than what he has gotten, also witt both catchers not likely returning, we might not have to worry about 1 C spot in a few years, at least I hope.

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2025, 4:06 pmIn the Cortes trade Padres also got a Rookie League SS ... Jorge Quintana. Might be a legit prospect (scouts will know) but might be the piece that got the Padres to take Cortes (and his contract) ... MILW always wants to shed money.

Ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 12 prospect in the 2024 international class, the 6-foot-2 switch-hitter impressed scouts with his all-around polish, especially at the plate. He has good bat-to-ball skills from both sides, and while the power mostly plays to the gaps at this early stage, there’s room for projection and eventual average pop once he matures physically.
18 and played in the ACL this season.
