If we can’t bear the Pirates…at home…I don’t much like our chances against the Rangers, dodgers, D-backs and Orioles coming up.
We may never have a 3+ win streak this entire season at this rate.

Quote from fenn68 on July 26, 2023, 4:00 pmSince all indications the Padres don’t plan to be seller … can create all kinds of logic to justify that. Then the Padres put on today’s clunker losing to the Pirates and the emotional side takes over again and see being a seller being the smart move … if nothing else send a message to the rest of the team failure has consequences.
Three games vs Texas … not sure I am wanting the Padres to win and keep false hope alive or to lose and focus on 2024.

Quote from fenn68 on July 27, 2023, 2:27 amTrade market is heating up beyond he more fringe moves up until now.
In a deal that may size the kind of return a Snell - Hader - Lugo may generate … CWS trade Giolito to the LAA for Quero (C, LAA’s #2 prospect and MLB’s #65) and Bush (LHP and LAA’s #3 prospect). That to me is a good return for a “rental” SP with an ERA in the mid-30s.
In more of a head scratcher deal … a swap of two FA to be. CLEVE sends SS Rosario to the LAD for RHP Syndergaard. Not sure what CLEVE was thinking (note the money was worked out as a net zero change to both teams). Rosario is not great but still functional and has a chance to play a lot at SS for LAD. Syndergaard is just plain bad in 2023. Just proves we can’t always understand the rationale of teams making deals.

Cleveland may be betting that they could get Syndergaard to pitch better, as - unless I’m mistaken - they have a history of developing pitchers and “fixing” the ones they acquire.

So does LAD, so I would imagine its going to be a tough road to fix Syndergaard, especially since the Niebla is here in SD.

Speaking of Niebla, would you guys say that he deserves a lot of the credit for our pitchers’ success?

Add they they are in the midst of a race for the AL Central and even the Wild Card .. and only two months to months to fix him … seems like a move of desperation
Maybe Rosario could not get them a ML SP that would help but they do have a deep farm system … maybe their front office is not willing to move prospects.

Quote from fenn68 on July 27, 2023, 9:30 amNiebla has been a real bright spot. Heard an interview where someone (forgot who) outlined all the data he maintained on each pitcher and how he used it to try to maximize the effectiveness … impressive. Also seems to be able to see how pitchers are off their game and has the ability to communicate the correction in a way the pitcher can accept … both in game and non-game situations.
It is clear that Melvin has full faith in Niebla and defers to him in who is ready (or not ready) to pitch on any day. Apparently Snell has a great relationship with Niebla … best since his TB coach. Pitchers just work well with him.
As a staff … Padres have been one of the best in MLB.

Quote from fenn68 on July 27, 2023, 10:39 amHearing a report that Nightingale is now reporting that his ML contacts are now saying the Padres are willing to trade Snell and Hader ... if valid ... the PITT series must have been pivot point.
Also, the return the CWS got for Giolito might have tipped the scale from the long shot for the playoffs to the upside for the future on a trade return.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 27, 2023, 11:50 amI think we could trade Hader and still compete for the playoffs this year...esp if we get any decent late inning reliever in the deal or a different deal. Not that the Pen is in great shape by any means...but this team seems to win big when they do win and lose the close ones even with Hader so....
Trading Snell is a whole other matter.
