Top ## List
Quote from fenn68 on July 4, 2022, 1:05 pmWith the graduation of Gore and Abrams from MLBPipeline’s Padres Top 30 prospects … added are #29 Iriarte (A ball RHP) and #30 Vela (A+ LHP). Everyone just move up slots.
Note: the this has not yet been updated for 2022 performances … so it is the starting list. Not sure when (if) they will make a mid-season re-ranking … a bit out of date with E.Ruiz at #28.

Luis Campusano, C, Padres (No. 34 to No. 56): Now in his second season at Triple-A, Campusano is performing well with El Paso (.328/.399/.492) but is struggling to catch on in San Diego. The 23-year-old has traded some power for contact too in 2022, which is notable for a catcher who slugged at least .500 in his previous two Minor League seasons. The longer he stays in the PCL, the more his prospect stock drops.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 8, 2022, 5:06 amI disagree with the last line.As long as he stays in the PCL the longer his stats are inflated and he stays desirable to other teams.
If he comes up to SD and rarely plays,or his numbers become “normal” I think the shine comes off some.
Unless of course he comes up and dominates…..which is possible.

Other GMs look at EP stats as we do … inflated. So, potentially a strong performance in EP for a second year and not being called up when the Padres are lacking offense in the #2 catcher or even DH may be a red flag … certainly does not help his projection.
Also, going into 2022 Nola was presumed #1 C … and Campusano as a Top prospect could have been considered as the second catcher after a good 2021 … but the Padres instead went with Alfaro … certainly does not help his projection.
As a catcher who can hit at all … still a valuable prospect BUT considering the two above points, maybe a bit less so than a year ago.
I tend to agree that Campusano’s trade value will drop unless he is proving his worth at the ML level. That puts the Padres in the position .. soon … of either trading Campusano (while his value is high .. if it is) or dealing Nola and calling up Campusano if he is the prospect we think he is. The ML success of Alfaro looks to be locking up one catching slot through 2023 (and an extension probable).

Quote from fenn68 on August 1, 2022, 1:25 pmWith the departure of Ruiz and Gasser off MLB Pipeline Top 30 list … and they just take whoever was next on their rankings outside the Top 30 (no real reranking) … added at
#29 Rosier (22) … LHH OF in FW … drafted by SEA in 2021 and had an impressive debut … traded to SD. This is his first full season and after a slow BA start has taken off … speed, OBP, and with some power … can play CF. Expect in the after season re-ranking expect him easily in the Top 15
#30 Wolf (23) … LHP in FW … drafted by SD (4th round) in 2021 … has had his moments in his first full season … so probably better upside than a number of the prospect higher up the list.

Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2022, 6:38 amAfter Campusano - Merrill - Rosario ... just a sea of unknowns.
Have to see the post season re-rankings with the new draft added in. Even with this group ... can see a lot of the full season guys drop (not really good years) and some of the ACL/DSL types just get moved up just on upside potential over in game performance.
Also, I could see a larger number of 2022 draft picks hitting the list that I previously expected.

Quote from dusty on August 3, 2022, 9:19 amAfter these 2-3 years are up it will be interesting to see how the roster shakes out. Don't forget with Tatis, Machado and Musgrove, there will always be a chance to compete. Not to mention if Morejon fulfills his potential, that will be two front of the rotation pieces for another few years. How will the draft picks develop?
This international period coming up is going to be huge getting that catcher...will there be enough resources to keep Soto, or do they deal him after two seasons and get a couple good prospects who are close to MLB ready to ensure that we remain competitive.
Cronenworth and Kim...could be vital to keeping the infield set and only worrying about the outfield for years to come. And if Grisham has finally figured it out again, we are really worried about two corner outfield spots (unless Soto stays - or they get two outfielders for him) and a DH plus 3 starters and then your bullpen - which With Crismat, Kopps, Castillo, Wilson, Baez (Groome in the pen or the rotation) - you might have a core bullpen there for years to come and then you piece the others together.
Going to be interesting to see the vision moving forward and how much the Payroll limits go up in the future...If they somehow are under this year, do the penalties get reset and would they be willing to go back over next season or in the following season?

One BP arm that could play in SDP in 23 is former top 30 spec J Quezada..he is putting a very nice season together..including a dominant one at AA 0.69 ERA..he is 26 yrs old now
