Team Sale

This was surprising but not shocking news. Fingers crossed we get a deep pocketed owner that wants to win.

Not good news IMO.
The Padres had the 17th highest revenue in 2024 yet spent in the top 10 in 2025.

What are the chances the new ownership is willing to do that?

What happens if they only want to spend in the 17th range of pay payroll

Of course they may still spend in that range, but i’m guessing there’s a better chance they spend less than there is that they spend more.

Then there’s a matter of spending before the lockout while negotiating a sale price.

And what about the AJ Preller contract?

Ugh

Is there a SD curse I don't know about? It seems like every time something is going good we get a donkey kick in the nether regions. Even these last few years with injuries (Clevinger, Lamet), 2 consecutive playoffs where our offense was abducted by aliens and now this.

Maybe this is a good thing, I heard awhile ago that Bezos (Amazon) was interested in buying a NFL team, perhaps he could be interested in a MLB team instead. Is there a SD fan like Steve Cohen that could pop up and run the team like a fan......with massive amounts of cash.

Just hope the next owners dont need a layaway plan like whats his name before Seidler!

I have little hope SD can get an owner as good as Siedler … not in a small / mid market city.

Likely an investor group wanting long term gain and short term break even cash flow.

Every deal is different but typically the seller wants to minimize liabilities to make the deal more appealing to the buyer.

That may curb the Padres from any long contracts.

Add the potential work stoppage in 2027 … when the team likely will have a negative cash flow … sets up for a conservative 2026 spend.

New owners will want to mold the organization to their vision … might make some personal leave for more certainty sooner than later and some reluctant to join the organization.

Apparently one of the richest guys in the world (8th or 9th) is interested in buying the Padres and is already in preliminary negotiations with the Seidlers. Steve Ballmer is the owner of the Clippers and has strong ties to the SD area, and according to what I read, the Seidlers are requiring the new owners to keep the team in SD. From what I have read, a deal could be in place by Spring Training.

This could be exactly what could save the offseason for SD. Would Ballmer give the nod to current ownership to spend the money knowing that he is good with increasing the payroll?

Oh, by the way Ballmer would be the richest MLB owner by at least 5 times over than current richest owner in MLB, Steve Cohen!!

Balmer ownership would be HUGE!!!

My step dad worked for him with the Clippers, says you can't find a better dude🤙🏽

And the best part....he doesn't mind spending money🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑

The way I look at it there’s only two things that really matter to fans when it comes to ownership,
who do they want as general manager, and how much money do they spend. Right now we have AJ Preller, which I want to continue, and we’re spending in the top 10, which I also want to continue. So I’m not sure why people would think a sale would be good when both of those or one of those could change very easily.
With the 17th highest revenue, I can’t imagine they’re gonna raise payroll into the top three, so my fear is it goes the other direction…..and without a Preller extension, I’m worried they’re gonna wanna go with their own guy and we get somebody who doesn’t find talent like AJ does

I imagine new ownership will want to keep AJ, although be it on a short leash. They won't want to anchor themselves to an albatross!

My guess would be a 3 year, make good deal, as in, okay, here's the money for a good roster, now put some hardware on our mantelpiece.

Everything seems in place- solid roster, great park, great fan support. A new owner will want to see results for a top 5 payroll, and that means division championships, and WS appearances.
