Announcers suggested the Padres folks said he had great talent but was very raw on the edges.

Quote from Randy Manese on March 31, 2022, 2:31 pmInteresting that Lamet is in the game. Last pitched on 29 March, which means only 1 day of rest. Prior to that, had two-three days of rest between outings. If you can count on Lamet to come in after only 1 day of rest, makes bullpen much stronger. Got behind in the count on two batters but came back to get outs. Don't think he'll go a second inning but we shall see.

Quote from Randy Manese on March 31, 2022, 3:31 pmPaddack pitched well, including an improving curveball with big break; Arizona batters didn't seem to bite on his change. Paddack victim of some bad luck during this inning, but it seems he could be a good piggy-back candidate with Gore to begin the season. With Darvish and Musgrove ready to go possibly for 6, unless Clevinger is ready, it seems we have to go Snell + Clevinger with Martinez going it alone as the 5th starter. As the starts go forward, I think this will sort itself out so by the time we get to May 1st the pitchers who have been effective with the most endurance will comprise the 5 or 6 man rotation. Paddack, Gore and Musgrove all have options but the latter surely will not be sent down. If Snell gets it together, Paddack may become the long man in the bullpen otherwise, trade of someone? All appear healthy but it's a long season. I really want to take a very long look at Gore.

Quote from WindsorUK on March 31, 2022, 3:33 pmRotten AB by Voit there.
Runners at 2nd and 3rd, no outs, pitcher not consistently over the plate. We're down 4-1.
He needs to put the ball in play. Get a run across, move another guy to 3rd with less than 2 outs. Put us within 1.
Hopefully our new hitting coach is bending his ear re: situational hitting.

Quote from fenn68 on March 31, 2022, 3:42 pmA one off thought but as the roster stands now … and with the 28 player limit in April but no limit on pitchers … might the Padres go with 16 pitchers (can always make a move to lower the count before May 1). Gives a bit more time evaluate all the pitching options and maybe work a deal for one or two out of option bubble arms.
IF Voit is DH … basically the bench would be Alfaro, Caratini, and Beaty (Campusano sent to AAA). Not ideal for the long run but for April when the starters will likely play every day and there are no clear other OF/INF bench options (other than Abrams) … might work and if Abrams is needed a quick call gets him back.

Quote from sportwarrior on March 31, 2022, 5:53 pmSnell rolling into camp under prepared and then walking the universe in his first appearance doesn't make me happy. He's got amazing stuff and all the talent to be an ace, but my patience with him is razor thin. There is no reason whatsoever it should have taken him 4 months to figure his ish out last season. It's not gonna take more than a few bad starts in a row this season for him to piss me off.

Quote from Randy Manese on March 31, 2022, 7:21 pmThe 2022 pitching staff has pretty much been established, however, after I tossed him in the trash bin (to be DFA'd!), it seems Javy Guerra has fought his way back on the roster with his last couple of performances. Probably as the 15th or 16th pitcher but you need somebody to clean up routs, either for or against. This will allow a couple of other relievers with options to get a head start in El Paso.
So my projected pitching staff is: Darvish, Musgrove, Martinez, Gore, Clevinger, Paddack and Snell as starters/piggy-back starters, so that is 7 spots. The 8-9 relief pitchers are: Lamet, Adams, Johnson, Stammen, Pagan, Hill, Suarez, Guerra and possibly Crismatt. Crismatt, Pagan, Lamet and Hill all have options although all but Crismatt are unlikely to be sent down. Garcia goes on the IL. Closer is probably either Suarez or Johnson; Pagan had a chance early, but has faltered lately. If Guerra blows it in the last week before the season opener, then either Crismatt or Wilson as the 15th and/or 16th pitcher on the roster. Anticipating Weathers to get some extended time in San Antonio unless starting rotation gets hit with an early injury and even then Knehr or A Martinez should be called up before him. Weathers has a lot of talent but hasn't yet put it altogether consistently and that's why I'd opt to send him down - right now just catches too much of the plate when he misses which accounts for that high home run percentage he sports.

that sounds about right as I see it … but the wild card may be Weathers as the 2nd LHRP (they only have Hill) and with the capability of being a long man.
Still a week to go … so another IL move has a very decent chance to develop.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 1, 2022, 10:27 pmAfter Darvish, Padres brought out 4 pitchers who could be considered on the bubble for the 15th or 16th spot on the roster. Actually, Kopps was on the bubble for either San Antonio or El Paso and since he struck out the side, they might start him at El Paso.
With regard to Krol, Crismatt and Wilson none gave up any runs but it appears Krol and Crismatt had some loud outs; Krol is the only lefty of this group and has had a decent spring. Wilson probably pitched the best although he gave up a walk. This audition will probably continue over the weekend, when Guerra, Bergen and possibly Westphal with the latter two being lefties.
Guerra and Crismatt are already on the roster so they have the advantage all things being equal. To me, it's Guerra's spot to lose since Crismatt has an option left. Wild card is Weathers, but I don't think they want him up as a RP, so unless he's yet another piggy-back candidate, it's probably down to San Antonio for him. I think they want to see more of Krol at El Paso before they commit to him taking a 40 man roster spot. Small sample size in ST vice what he's done previously in his career.

Quote from fenn68 on April 2, 2022, 3:56 amShould be an tense few days for the RP corps. Baring more IL type injuries … odds are some candidates are traded / DFA given the “out of minor league options” total.
I would not exclude Wilson (on the 40 man) … been very effective and carries three minor league options that could be used during the season.
A second LHRP … do the Padres really see that as a major need, at least, enough to potentially drop another player from the roster? Except for Weathers, the other options are “non-roster” and would need to be added to the 40 man.
Padres will probably go with the best options (as they see it) and not play roster games just to keep someone around.
