Spring Training-

If we project Machado - Tatis - Cronenworth in the INF starting in July ... Kim will fall to the utility INF role at that point and would "free up" Abrams to focus on an OF role going forward (he has too much potential to be anything but a starter ... Padres have the need going forward in the OF ... so maybe a question as to when he shifts to OF not if.

If Abrams starts the season in AAA ... does some splitting between INF and OF gradually expanding the OF role until July ... keeps him INF ready Apr-Jun in case of emergency while exposing him to the OF if needed at any point. Maybe he is needed in the OF the second half ... and really in the mix next season with Myers a FA.

I would not be so sure that Abrams will bump Grisham out of CF. Grisham is a very good defensive OF and Abrams  "looks" like he should be but will not know if he is better than Grisham until he is out there. Good chance he emerges in a corner OF slot (even though he does not "look" that role). 2023 Abrams / Grisham in the OF and still looking for another OF ... Profar / Beaty bench.

Add on Grisham ... was watching MLB network's Top 10 CF ... and two of the analysts included Grisham at about #10. Grisham may not be All-Star quality but apparently there are a lot of CF lesser CF.

Need to give Nick Martinez some hype for his work ... effective and extended his innings. Nice array of stuff and command.

Looking as the leading candidate for a starter role who will give you innings. With Snell and Clevinger likely to have a innings limit early ... need the other starters to keep the pen fresh.

Would they "piggyback" Snell and Clevinger? Darvish, Musgrove, N. Martinez, Snell/Clevinger, the either Gore or Paddack might work. Only one piggyback situation might be better for the bullpen freeing up a RP for normal duties.

Before we get too excited about Abrams’ ML readiness … consider:

In his last 8 games (17 AB) … only 3 hits (all singles) .176 BA … 6 strikeouts. Plus the ML quality pitchers are just getting into season shape.

Future yes … present not so much.

With Snell and Clev both limited they won’t pitch them on back to back days.

So,I’d like to see:

Darvish

Snell/Paddack

Musgrove

Clevinger/Weathers

Martinez

I know this limits the Pen but we at least start the season with 2 extra roster spots anyway so……

I think you are right on target, however, I'd pencil in Gore vice Weathers.  For those piggy-back days, bull pen use should be minimal, so with potentially 8 relief pitchers and possibly Stammen or Johnson (or even Lamet) as long men, this could be a good way to get to 1 May.

Weathers needs minor league innings to hone his craft since he is only 22 and has only 10 innings pitched above A ball.  Best place to do that is probably San Antonio.  Once he develops, he should be a great complement to the staff and could even come up again sometime in 2022, depending upon the need to give some of these recovering/aging pitchers a break.

SD is carrying the AZ feed for the TV game today … so some different perspectives on the Padres to the extent the announcers comment.

Alfaro catching and had a beautiful peg down to 2B on a steal attempt … quick pop - bullet throw - right on target. Announcers said that was the report on him … powerful arm.

Snell started … usual start with lack of command and a lot of pitches yet good stuff. FB was hitting 96 MPH. 27 pitches in the 1st … no runs.

It should be interesting to see what Niebla can do with Snell. He has the stuff, and the mentality when he wants. Maybe its a focus thing? Hopefully Niebla can get some additional performance out of Snell.

As awesome as Snell was at the end of last season, he was atrocious the first half.

And here we are once again- he just doesn't look ready to compete.

I know it's not likely but I would certainly move him for a bat. There are LOADS of teams looking for arms, I'm sure we could  find a suitable trade partner.

Overall poor performance from Snell - almost 50 pitches and can't get out of 2nd inning.  Fastball command poor and secondary pitches not working maybe as a result of bad command.  Does Snell start against Arizona in opening series based on this performance or do they start him against SF as the last man in the rotation?  Likely has one more ST start so we shall see.

On Snell the observation of the announcers was that he is always a slow starter into the season and that is how TB handled him. Wonder if that plays into the piggyback to start a the season with a Snell / Paddack package (today’s set-up).
