Spring Training 2023
Quote from Henry Silvestre on March 19, 2023, 1:27 pmQuote from Randy Manese on March 19, 2023, 11:04 amWith the exception of Nola, Carpenter and Cruz looks like it is an opportunity for guys fighting for the last spots on the bench to make an impression. This also includes Teheran, who has been up and down this spring.
Speaking of LHRP I can see Groome SP and Weathers (BP + SP similar to Nick 22 version) going foward.. sort of the more reliable, newly remodeled Weathers will get the innings Morejon was scheduled for in 23.. and Morejon will have to stay healthy to get a few starts or some relief appearances in 23 but feels like Groome for SP now and beyond and Weathers for SP/BP role have moved past Morejon in the pecking order... and Wolf (looked very solid in his lone RP appearance of the spring) is knocking at AA along with Cosgrove at AAA.. the one P I think is in danger of his 40 spot is Avila.. usage and lack of huge upside make him the perfect DFA guy (was DFA already earlier in his career and clear.. now he is even more likely to clear vs then when he was pretty mid on the top 30 list

So...how has Campusano looked this spring? Anyone?

Quote from Randy Manese on March 19, 2023, 7:45 pmDon't yet know the extent of the injury but it is particularly bad for a catcher to get injured in this manner since he has to wear a mask and takes some punishment to his head/face even without a head injury. I'm guessing Nola may be out as much as 6-8 weeks if there is surgery necessary to correct a deviated septum. In the meantime, looks like we first go with Campy as #1 and, because he is already on the roster and did decently for Italy in the WBC, we have Sullivan as our #2. Neither of these guys is really a defense-first or superior defensive catcher, so if it becomes apparent in the next two weeks that this is not going to work, Severino is brought in and they go looking for someone they might be able to pry away from a team with a lesser chance to make the playoffs for a decent prospect. Jason Castro is still available as a FA and at one time he was a decent defensive catcher.
Hoping we get Nola back in less than the 8 weeks it might take but it's going to be a challenge for the pitching staff to adapt to whoever is brought in or whoever assumes the #1 role. Hopefully, Campy will be at least adequate.

Does Alfaro have an opt out after spring if he doesn't make the 40?
Did Gary Sanchez sign with anyone?
And Sullivan can hit, that at least takes care of Nola on that side of the ball...

Quote from Henry Silvestre on March 19, 2023, 8:44 pmEric Haase always been intriguing to me.. not sure he is a starting C per say... but a backup C/OF/1B/DH .. very versatile backstop, similar to Sullivan in that respect but with a lot more MLB experience.. Tigers projecting Jake R. As their starting C.. so Haase might be available for something not too big..

Quote from fenn68 on March 20, 2023, 3:34 amI would stick with the trio of Campusano - Sullivan - Severino. … to start the season. Think this team can carry any of them plus not sure any of the alternative that may be available are really an upgrade (but will cost a pretty penny with others thinking it is a panic move by the Padres).
Given the extent of his ST work and ML experience Severino should get added to the roster ahead of Sullivan BUT would not rule out Sullivan taking that back-up 2nd slot as a LHH who had a good WBC and is on the roster.
First real extended legit test for Campusano … that should do a lot to clear his projection for the rest of the season … and beyond.

Quote from fenn68 on March 20, 2023, 3:46 amSoto “day to day” with a right oblique strain … those injuries can linger if not cared for early … some thought of a 10 day IL to start the season.
With a chance of both Nola and Soto going to the IL to start the season …. Padres have some different decisions on the 40 man. Looks like the trio of Azocar - Dahl - Engel are safe with Grisham in the OF … so the Soto replacement can be INF or OF until Tatis is activated (and Soto is activated). Maybe 3 catchers with Nola out?
Add the Musgrove injury (and Pomeranz, Morejon, Castillo) and the start of 2023 is gong to be interesting. Across the league a lot of big name injuries piling up … but it is a 162 game season and this is what good teams have to overcome.

Quote from fenn68 on March 20, 2023, 6:32 amPadres are not playing an “A” game today and with only a week until camp breaks … this would be an appropriate time to option / cut players from the ML camp and start the culling process of minor league players (at least at the AAA level). AAA starts basically at the same time as the ML club so sort of on the same timeline.
