Spring Training 2023

According to Fangraphs 29 teams have full 40 man rosters … only Atlanta at 39 does not.

That may make it easier to pass a player though waivers at the end of ST and assign him to the minors. Other teams may have some 60 day IL to open slots but they should have their own non-roster candidates to fill that void.  Even less likely a claim if the player on waivers is without minor league opinions and would require squeezing someone off the 26 man roster.

Most teams at the end of ST likely have a mental buy-in to the players they are selecting to the ML roster … so maybe not eager to make a claim.

Might set-up a better scenario to get Honeywell through waivers rather than keeping him on the 26 man.

Report that Campusano has a "minor" hamstring strain ... we know hamstrings can be a lingering problem.

They are not going to burn out Nola is ST ... so, Severino may be getting a long audition for a 26 man slot if Campy is not ready. It will be interesting to see who else gets playing time behind the plate. So far, Seagle has been getting work while Sullivan in at a the WBC.

I know many would want to see Salas but since he is "closer" ... they may have Valenzuela get some exposure to the ML side of ST.

Sullivan had a big game for team Italy yesterday...

Engel is supposed to be in the lineup tomorrow. Batten is back to taking live BP.

Groome struggled a bit but allowed ZERO runs ..now has pitched 10.2 innings 0.00 ERA .. 1.22 WHIP excellent numbers so far

Well that sucks Stanmen cones out with an injury after 2/3 scoreless inning.. this could be it for this Padre .. was playing out like a good Vet guy in AAA with a chance to get a call up late..bummer

Realistically doubt he would have gone to AAA ... more likely retired and added to the Padres front office or coaching staff. Maybe that day is coming soon ... the organization really likes him as a leader.

Although I expect Grisham to be in CF for the Padres when the season begins … should we start considering his future may be becoming less secure. Padres’ offense can carry him  and his defense … but an overall upgrade may not be that hard in 2023 and forward. Consider (BA/OPS)

2021 (pre-All Star): 279/848

2021 (post-All Star): 211/629

2022 (pre-All Star): 192/622

2022 (post-All Star): 172/633

2023 (spring training): 217/687

Maybe that hot start in 2021 was the aberration and the real Grisham is what he has done in the past year and a half … a sub—200 / low OPS hitter.

In 2023 beginning to expect a lot of platoon situations where we see Azocar or Eaton in CF. In 2024, could we see Tatis in CF given the Padres’ brass seem to envision him as an All-Star CF talent and it would be easier to add in a corner OF offering more production than Grisham. The Korean OF seems a person of interest.

Grisham starting to fall back into his bad habits as ST moves along.  Lack of plate discipline and swinging at pitches outside the strike zone.  Hopefully, he'll turn it back around before the season starts.  Agree that Grisham has offensive limitations that might make him available in trade as early as this year.

If Grisham's offensive struggles continue and other guys perform things could get interesting quickly. I think we'll start the year with Dahl platooning with someone in RF. If that's working it could be tempting to put Tatis in CF.
